Just across the river from old town. We tried it because it was a sister restaurant to our hotel (Golden Ente). Excellent traditional food. Few tourists. Friendly regulars. Good wine. We should have sat in a non-smoking section, but that was our fault for not noticing.

I enjoyed dining here very much. Fresh-super tasty-no frill-home cooked style food. The server was very friendly and prompt with service. Very reasonably priced. I avoid over priced so so food tourist spot when I travel and I was very happy that I found this place.

Start your meal with the beer soup! Very tasty, and quite light. This feels liek the type of place that people 'know' about. It looks almost closed from outside, but was quite busy inside, good mixture of peope too, young and old.

It's dark and smokey and that lends a certain credance to it's traditional feel, but the smoke may get to you if you're not used to people smokinmg in eating establishments any more. There is a couple of sectiosn though, so you can ask for a table away from the smokers.

A well priced meal to fill you up on a winter night. (16 euros bought me a beer, soup and a main course)

In late September 2011 we strolled down Steingasse in Salzburg's new town section. The street has many medieval buildings. Toward the end of the street at No. 65 we stumbled across the Andreas Hofer restaurant. It was wonderfully old with a great atmosphere. There are booths inside and wood paneled walls. The food was delicious and local and the beer was good. My wife had an acceptable glass of white wine. The price was reasonable. It was a delightful experience.

This traditional Weinstube is definitely a hidden gem off the beaten path. It's located in a quiet cobblestone street (Steingasse) on the opposite side of the Altstadt and the Salzach river. The interior is very cosy, Weinstube-like with candles, wooden floor, tables and benches. The menu is basic, but the food is hearty and tasty. Generous servings for low prices. We both ordered a Schnitzel (different preparations) and we enjoyed the crispy breading and tender meat. Good local wines too. Not to miss if you are up for a real Austrian experience. Reservations are highly recommended as this place fills up quickly - being popular with students - and the number of tables is limited.
