Don't be put off by the reception area, the rooms are surprisingly pleasant (ours was themed 'Sound of Music', room 301) with loads of space, very clean with comfy beds. We were located in the main building which was very quiet.
Staff were pretty helpful most of the time although restaurant staff seemed a little miserable at times. Breakfast was reasonably basic but good, we ate 1 evening meal in the hotel which was ok but we felt that there were better restaurants in the town itself.
I think the location is good, we mostly walked into the city which took is along the river, it took us about 15 minutes to get to the old town. On the occasions we got a taxi it arrived at the hotel in less than 5 minutes and was reasonably priced. I'd recommend this hotel, it exceeded my expectations!

We chose this hotel because of it's close proximity to the train & bus station in Salzburg. We were easily able to walk from the station to the hotel with our luggage. Pretty much everything in Salzburg is within walking distance, but if you want to conserve some of your energy, they have a very easy to use bus system as well. The hotel staff was fabulous. They were very helpful and pleasant. They gave us a very easy to read map and circled the hotels location along with many other points of interest and explained how to get to places. There was a great restaurant connected to the hotel that we gad a very nice dinner at one night. It also serves as the breakfast room. The included breakfast buffet was very good. There was a large selection of items and the food was fresh and tasty. Now on to the best part, the room. Our room was located on the Sound of Music floor, which was decorated according to the movie. Our room was large and very comfortable. It was very clean and looked freshly renovated. The bathroom floors were even heated! Which was very nice since it was December and cold. This hotel is my favorite of all the hotels I have ever stayed in. Salzburg is amazing, and beautiful, and this hotel made our stay perfect. I highly recommend it!

Room Tip: All the floor options looked great, but if you love The Sound of Music, choose floor 3. =)

We stayed in the Annex. Beds pretty bad, with thin walls and even thinner doors. We heard the neighbours open and close the doors all night, and they seemed to have quite a party. When I do not get a decent night's sleep because of problems with the property, I cannot rate it higher than two stars.

I would add that the staff were helpful and we were able to locate a great spot for lunch because of a recommendation, a place called der alte Fuchs.

Dear Sir/Madame,

we want to take this opportunity and thank you for your feedback to our hotel. We take our guests comments seriously and are happy about the chance to improve due to your suggestions and observations.

Regarding your comment we are really sorry that you did not have a quiet night in our hotel! Certainly we would have called your room neighbors, if we would have known about this issue! We do have a night auditor so that our guests can call us 24/7 at the front desk. We are sure we could have talked to them so that you could have slept well!

The bad beds concerning, we do have different mattresses, very soft ones and also hard ones. Again here - please talk to us - certainly we could have arranged a change of the mattress so that you would have had a nice sleep.

Nevertheless, we want to apologize once more for the inconveniences during your stay and are looking forward to getting another chance to welcoming you at our hotel.

Kind regards from the city of Mozart
The Team of the Hotel Der Salzburger Hof

My daughter and I stayed here for two nights, as part of our "Christmas Market" tour through Austria and Germany. We walked from the train station, as it was only a block. Our room was on the top floor, but they do have an elevator for those who wish. The hotel had theme floors having to do with Sound of Music, Mozart, etc. The staff was exceptional. They were extremely helpful and great English speakers. The room was large, bed comfortable, and quiet. The breakfast was substantial and served by a very nice and efficient woman. My only complaint was that cigarette smoke seemed to come up from somewhere and our room smelled like smoke, especially at night. I'm thinking from the basement area. This was not pleasant as we wanted a non smoking room. Maybe it was just our room, which was above the 4th floor. Otherwise, I can't recommend this hotel highly enough.

Room Tip: I would stay in a room lower than the very highest room, due to the smoke that drifted upwards from...

Five stars from us. We stayed in this hotel for 5 days and can thoroughly recommend it. The staff were very helpful, providing helpful advice. The room was nicely appointed and very clean. The room was very spacious with safe and tea and coffee making facilities and included an iplayer dock. Lovely and warm and the bathroom was spacious. The breakfast was really tasty, great choices of hot and cold food so much to choose from, continental meats and cheeses as well as various types of breads, fruit and pastries. Would definitely stay here again!

We are an elderly retired couple who are unashamedly travelling on our children's inheritance. We prefer to travel by train where we can, and therefore we prefer to stay in TA-recommended hotels close to rail stations. So, weighing up the above, this Hotel fitted our bill. We booked for three nights in mid-October via Rates2Go, because they offered a better deal than (our once-preferred option of) booking.com. Our advice is, do your homework!

So, what were the Positives?
1. The staff all spoke English and were very helpful - not only did they post our letters and ring up to reserve restaurants, they advised us to purchase the Salzburg Card. This card, for E35, gives unlimited travel on Salzburg buses as well as free admission to many of the Mozart attractions, including the funicular cable-car to the Fortress and the cable car to nearby Untersberg. This card is a bargain and highly recommended!
2. Breakfast was included in our tariff and provided a wide range of choices, including hot scrambled eggs and bacon; juices, cereals, meats and cheeses, and various breads.
3. Our room on the first floor was, by European standards, very spacious. It offered an Espresso coffee machine, a small fridge, and a very good en suite. WiFi speed also was very good.

What was not-so-good:
1. The weather was surprisingly mild in the third week of October, to the extent that our room became very stuffy and we were dismayed to find that the Air-Con didn't work. On querying why with reception, we were told that the hotel had switched off the cooling function for the winter, and individual rooms could not be turned on. OK, we can open the windows can't we? Well yes we can, except that being on the first floor traffic noise becomes obtrusive. This results in a poor night's sleep, and by golly, this makes us grumpy because we love our sleep!
2. The bathroom exhaust fan ("ventilator") didn't work so we reported this (twice!) to reception. Hopefully the next occupants of our room will have it working...

Summary: A good hotel, especially if can you can find a "competitive" tariff. Biggest plus is the staff, though it's a pity for us that a service technician couldn't sort out the air-con and exhaust fan issues. Despite this, yes, if we had a choice we'd stay here again - but I doubt that we are going to live long enough!

Room Tip: Ask for a room not overlooking the car park, nor the busy adjacent street.

We stayed a night after getting off the train from Vienna. Great that it is so close to the train station. Staff were super friendly and helpful. The family room was fantastic! it was very clean, large and had great facilities. We slept very well. Loved the Mozart theme everywhere :) Breakfast also excellent and the place was quite full. Probably a bit too far out from the old town for the family to walk but still very easy to catch a bus there. Nothing bad to say about this hotel at all. Just a minor point -the train station was quite ok inside, but a lot of renovations happening outside when we arrived. A few dodgy characters hanging around outside the station and it was rather dirty with rubbish etc. due to the construction work. Otherwise, we loved Salzburg!!!
