“Great Deal in Old Town”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 29, 2012

This is a clean, fresh, modern hotel in Old Town, just off Linzer Gasse. Steps from the bridge to Old Town, and near the Linzer Gasse parking garage also. Rooms are clean with modern "Ikea" type fixtures and appointments. Front desk is helpful, though you may need to follow up. They use only (seemingly) one tour company, so if you want to book tours, may have to look around, but they let us use their computer/internet behind the desk, and also booked a reservation for dinner for us, and a taxi, so overall, very accomodating. Staff is multi lingual with good English.

Hotel is currently under construction so entrance is off to one side. Please note the "Lobby Bar" is merely a counter next to front desk and receptionist serves drinks. This is NOT an actual bar or lounge. Nice this place has an elevator if you have lots of luggage. They have a great breakfast room, which includes the standard "Salzburg Style" continental breakfast of breads, cereals, meats, cheeses, and fruits, but also had a bonus of eggs and sausage, included. Very nice, food was fresh; coffee choices many.

Due to construction, it can be loud with windows open, but they are double paned, so when closed, noise is virtually not heard. Rooms have own A/C which is nice. Lots, and lots of cafes, eateries, and bars very nearby/within walking distance, including a creperie just in front. Close to Mirabell, bank, shopping, and of course, a hop over the bridge to Old Town near DomPlatz and Getraide Gasse. Great deal for the money, comfortable room.

My only complaint was the bedding and pillows ... not up to Austrian standards if you ask me.

Room Tip: Take a taxi ride to St. Peter's Keller. Oldest restaurant in all of Europe, established 803 by m...

Our first choice is usually Holiday Inn. But it's too darn expensive in Salzburg. Family room is 160€, with breakfast.
Star Inn is first of all 1,4km closer to the old town, it's almost in old town, secondly it's much more affordable. Family room is 129€ including breakfast. Thirdly kids under age 11 eat for free. And the last but not least, they have free WiFi. Get you access code from the reception.

Private underground parking is additional 15€ per night.

I would definitely recommend this hotel. It's great value for your money: my room was very quiet, it had a comfortable double bed, and the shower was really good. The walk to the historic city centre is not very long. (I also walked to the hotel from the train station, which is quite a bit longer, but doable.) A few tips: the commenter below me recommended the small cabin-type place near the hotel and the entrance to the tunnel... I agree! They make great pizzas on the spot. I also strongly recommend the climb up to the Monschberg (the hill behind the hotel). The view is amazing, and it's so peaceful.

We stayed for four nights while attending our friends' wedding recently, so with lots of meet-ups with the other guests planned, we really didn't spend much time in the hotel.

We arrived by train from Munich airport, changing once at Munich hbf (although some friends who did the same journey changed at Munich Central which was a couple of stops earlier and they said the train was quieter then). We used the Bayern ticket, 29 euros which covered us both but this is only valid on some trains (Regional Express to Salzburg) - check the OBB website.

On arrival at Salzburg we took the 1 bus which stops across the road from the hotel - the first stop just after coming through the big stone tunnel under the Monchsberg. Check in was quick and easy and we went up in the lift to our room on the 3rd floor.

The room is small but very clean and modern with wood flooring. The bed is large and although the mattress initially looked a bit thin it was actually very comfortable. No extra pillows in the room - just one each - but I'm sure if you asked, reception/housekeeping would be able to give you more. Individually controlled airconditioning and the only thing the room was missing was perhaps a small fridge to keep drinks cool. Not a huge amount of coathangers either so take a few extra if you have a lot to hang up.

That bathroom was spotless with just a shower (no bath) but it was powerful with good water pressure and temperature so we were happy with it. There's a hairdryer in here too but we had brought our own, and there's a power point just in front of the large mirror in the bedroom entryway which was perfect for this.

Because we had a couple of late nights and late rises, we missed maid service a couple of times - this seems to stop about lunchtime. Not a complaint, it was our own fault, just something to be aware of.

All in all this is a perfect base for a sightseeing trip - it's close to the old town (just through the pedestrian tunnel on the left hand side - ie you need to cross the road - the one on the right is the route to a parking garage!) We never felt unsafe walking through the tunnel, it's well-lit.

One final tip - there's a small hut just before you go through the tunnel. It's a takeaway/cafe (some tables outside). They do the most fantastic pizza! Very authentic, seems like fresh dough and toppings made in a really good oven. Do try it, you won't be disappointed!

The location is perfect for a city trip! Right behind the Kapuzinerberg, you are in a few minutes within the city center.

We had a nice room on the ground floor. Very quiet as it was facing the backyard. Very spacious as it was a handicapped accessible room. Nothing to say about the room.

Negative point: the breakfast room is too small, the girls working there a bit overstrained at "rush hour", coffee not good and the assortment not worth the 11 €.

Nice: after check-out we could leave the car in the park garage until 2 pm
