Fantastic & definitely worth a visit. I didn't realise there was a non-smoking room at first, but its worth hunting down if you don't smoke as it gets a bit misty in there at times! Great place to go if you're a solo traveller too as there are some big, communal tables and the locals are usually regulars and are often very happy to chat and tell you about the area.

Visiting Augistiner Bräustübl Tavern is a must for all beer lovers. The monastery brewery was established in 1621 and the benedictines still own half of the brewery. The tavern has many several rooms - or should I say halls - that have seating capacity around 200 per room. All the rooms are very impressive, but if you can choose I recommend the Stockhammer Room that is smoking free.

The tavern works on a self-service basis. It means you must first pick a mug (one or half litre) from the shelf on the corridor and wash it. Then you go to cashier, pay your beer and after that your mug is filled from a wooden barrel. Sounds a bit awkward but works fine and fast. Usually they serve Märzen type of beer, but seasonally they brew some other types, too.

The beer is not the only reason visiting Augustiner Bräustübl, yet it tastes fine. The tavern is also a splendid place to taste typical Austrian cuisine, thanks to Schamnkerlgang. On this "Delicatessen Arcade" you find a lot of small stalls selling different kind of foods. If you are really hungry I recommend you the Pavlovic stall and their roasted pork with potatoe salad. The pork I ate was juicy and tender and there must have been about 500 grams of meat on my plate. Of course you can find something for a snack too, but I think in tavern like this meat is the right thing to eat.

Travelling with children is not a reason to pass by Augustiner. The locals come here to spend afternoon with their families and friends, especially on weekends. There is also a large beer garden where the children can play and run freely during visit.

You start by collecting a beer mug from the shelf and washing it out, then buy some beer tokens from the cashier and take them down the back where they will fill up your mug. No difficult choices to make because they only serve one type of beer, brewed by the monastery itself. There is plenty of meaty foods to buy at the stalls within the hall to eat with the beer. Get there early as the communal tables fill up pretty quickly.

Excellent place to visit while you are in Salzburg. You will see all kind of people(students, tourists, elder locals) enjoying their beers. It is a must if you like beers and snacks (you buy them from shops on the corridors). The building is also very interesting (something like old monastery...?). Read older reviews also to see how this works (buy beer and food) because it is a self service.

For the ultimate beer house experience,The place is huge inside , a proper beer drinking experience, complete with some of the obvious regulars dressed up in ledderhosen and Austrian hats. We had beers and bratwurst, fantastic, good selection of local food to choose from all at great prices. No wine for the ladies though, they only serve beer and soft drinks.
