This was where the concept for The Sound of Music was filmed. Most was actually filmed on the Hollywood soundstage. This is a lovely old palace, the main building has rooms as well. It's in the style of youth hostels. Don't come and expect a gorgeous hotel stay, come walk the grounds, have an event. If you must stay, rooms I the palace are nicer, rooms un the main building well... In summer get outside facing rooms lower floors or you will bake (no air con or heating unit).

This is a beautiful property to stay at, regardless if you are a fan of the movie or not. However, for fans of the movie, this is the ONLY place to stay as you have unprecedented access to the grounds that the average tourist would not have. We stayed in the Meirhof, but enjoyed the fantastic breakfast in the Schloss itself. The breakfast consisted of traditional Austrian fare, as well as North American staples. The old center of Salzburg is a 10-15 minute walk. The staff were helpful, and knowledgeable. Finding the hotel was easy using using a standard GPS (we drove from Munich). We stayed at this hotel during the first week of July where temperatures were over 40 degrees Celsius; no air conditioning made sleeping difficult, but we were provided with fans for better air circulation. Only true criticism that I have is that I had to walk a great distance to have access to the ironing room. I recommend this one-of-a-kind property.

Room Tip: Stay off the top floor of the Meirhof: the rooms are much smaller up there

The Sound of Music (SOM) movie was filmed at several different sites in Salzburg. Schloss Leopoldskron was one of the film sites (the famous scene dancing in the gazebo by the lake), and also the exterior was used for filming, the interior design was the inspiration for some of the set designs in the SOM.
This is a great place with very reasonable room rates that include a generous buffet breakfast. There are actually two buildings: The Schloss, which was the original residence for Max Reinhardt, and the Meierhof, which was probably used for stables and residence for the staff. Most will stay in the second building, which has average sized rooms (if you're there in the summer, get a room on the 1st floor--which is really the 2nd floor, and avoid the top floor, which is very warm). My room had a king bed, which was really 2 doubles put together. The bed was not something to write home about, the room had a high ceiling, which made the room seem larger, and had a small desk, a very small TV, and sitting chair. The tub-shower was a bit awkward (with the glass doors), but overall adequate bathroom. Downstairs in the main hall, there are an assortment of magazines and newspapers, books for reading, computer terminals and free Wi-Fi, yes, you heard it, free wi-fi. Most hotels in Europe charge an additional fee for Wi-Fi.

I was there as a part of the Salzburg Global Seminar and Schloss Leopoldskron hosts many conferences throughout the year, so it is wise to book ahead. Their nightly rate of 100 Euro (summer) was surprisingly reasonable (and it includes the generous breakfast). They have bicycles for rent, and you can ride throughout the main bike paths in this part of Salzburg.
The Schloss is about 15-20 minute walk from the Mozartplace in old Salzburg. There's a bus line that goes out to the Schloss that drops you off about 10 minute walk away. If you want to stay at a place that is outside of the hustle and bustle of the main city, this is it. The desk clerks are very helpful, knowledgeable, and will book you tours and tell you everywhere to go and how to get there. Enjoy your stay at this unique place.

Room Tip: Get a room on the 1st floor (2nd floor for Americans--in Europe, the 0 floor is the main floor) in the summer because the top floor is warm if the weather is hot outside.

Definitely a neat place to check out. The surrounding area with the lake and palace are amazing. A very good breakfast (eggs and bacon included, Americans) served in the palace is a lot of fun. The room is fine, nothing great. But pets are welcome and the service is extremely friendly. I'll be back. The walk from the hotel to old town is very fun (maybe 20 minutes and hilly, but gorgeous)

Room Tip: No A/C, so you may find yourself a bit warm if you stay here right in the middle of summer and are accustomed to A/C. It's not a real hot climate, though.

We loved staying here. It's a little shabby, the floors creak, the bathrooms were motel-like, but I would take this over a 5 star hotel any day (and I really like 5 star hotels!). The view, the quiet, the interior, the feeling of staying in such a grand and wonderful place, more than made up for any inadequacies. Great breakfast; wonderful people behind the reception desk. It sits grandly right on the water where the Von Trapp family had their boating accident. My favorite part: sitting out on the terrace where the Baroness asked Max if he'd "ever heard of a little thing called boarding school." Worth it!
