“Great food at a fair price”
Reviewed December 30, 2013

My wife, son and I had dinner at Il Padrino based on comments we read on Trip Advisor. We were not disappointed in the least. We all ate the freshly made pastas, each of us sampling a different version and we all liked our choices. We also enjoyed nice bottle of red wine at a very good price. The restaurant is a short walk from the train station and it has a very pleasant atmosphere.

“Score umm I'll let you decide!”
Reviewed November 2, 2013

After reading reviews on trip advisor and in desperation to eat something that wasn't meat and bread, we decided to give Il Padrino a try. I wanted to give this review a scoring of 2, hubby felt 3 was more appropriate, I'll let you decide.

Il Padrino is located a mile walk outside the old town of Salzburg, it's not in the best area and I did feel somewhat vulnerable, so I'd recommend a taxi. We arrived at Il Padrino at 5.50pm, as it was a Saturday night we thought it may be busy and after a long day of sight seeing an early dinner would be welcome. A waiter was stood outside and we asked for a table for 2, he asked us to wait (outside) whilst he went in to discuss, eventually another waiter came out and advised if we left by 8pm we could have a table now, that suited us, reassured him we would be gone before 8pm and sat down. We were given menus immediately and asked for drinks, I quickly scouted the drinks menu and selected a Campari and orange (which was delicious) and hubby a beer, we were then asked for our order for food, I explained just got the menu needed to actually look at it. Within 1 minute food selected and ordered, phew!

Something which was really disconcerting was the number of small little fruit flies, yuk, we kept flicking them away, at the end of the meal I looked on the curtain behind hubby and there were about 20 urghhh!

Starters arrived quickly hubby had antipasto which was very good and plentiful, I had pasta penne arrabiatta, the pasta itself was not the best quality, however is was cooked al dente which is perfect, the sauce was ok, tinned tomatoes which sadly had been reduced too far, however it did have the right level of piquancy, there was just far too much sauce for the pasta (the pasta should always be the star with just enough sauce to coat it) this pasta was drowning. Perfectly edible though (just not authentic as others have commented on)

Next course was pizza, hubby Parma ham with rocket, me calzone. The pizzas are huge!!! Once I had cut away all the unnecessary and tasteless dough from around the calzone it was much more a normal size (a bit of style over substance), the calzone wasn't great, the filling (cheese, ham and mushrooms) was bland, when putting vegetables in a calzone you should blanch or sautéed them first. The mushrooms had been put in raw so as they cooked inside the calzone and released their moisture this made the filling very wet!! Hubby's pizza was ok, again he had to cut away and leave the excessive dough crust. However what was very poor service was waiter came over asked me if I'd finished and cleared my plate whilst hubby was still eating, that is rude !!!

When hubbys main was cleared I asked for the bill (this was before 7pm and a hour before they needed the table, we had assumed at this point that our very rushed service was due to the fact that we hadn't booked and our table was reserved at 8pm, hence why hubby was more generous with the score), waiter delivered the bill and stood there waiting for payment (instead of what he should have done, leave the bill, walk away to allow the diner time to check that the bill is correct and to get their money to pay, whilst this waiter was pleasant enough he lacks very basic waiting skills and just plain old fashion courtesy) I quickly scrambled for my bag, got my credit card, paid the bill just over 58Euro and I left a 5 euro tip, we were out the door by 7.05pm!!!!

Is it an authentic Italian restaurant, No
Should you book, yes
Was it worth the mile walk, No
Was it decent enough food Yes
Service, well pleasant enough staff, just was very rushed and some of the very basic waiting etiquette was missing
Price, for Salzburg reasonable

1 capo cucina : Raffaele Esposito Campania
2 secondo cuoco : Fabio Mangialardo Puglia
3 pizzaiolo : Giuseppe Ingrassia Sicilia
4 cameriere : Giovanni D´Ambra Campania
5 cameriere : Andrea Scognamiglio Campania

Reviewed October 9, 2013

My wife I walk a mile from out hotel to II Padrino. It was worth the walk. I had the pizza which was very good. Pasta dish with Alferdo sauce which was the some of the best she has ever had. We plan on returning there before we leave. If you are nearby I would recommend this for dinner. The service was excellent we had no reservation. We did go early to dinner.

After several days of delicious sausage and schnitzel, were in a mood for a change. I read about Il Padrino here and lucky for us it was a few blocks from our hotel. The food was fabulous. Fresh made pasta, amazing looking pizza's ( which we weren't able to try), delicious wine. We tried to return for pizza the following day, but arrived too late for lunch.
This is one of the best Italian restaurants I have been to anywhere.
