“Great, Basic Budget Lodging”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 31, 2013

Friendly desk staff communicated with us prior to our visit and welcomed us on our arrival. Rooms were basic (institutional). The facility also accommodates university students, so think dorm-like, but clean and quiet. There is no daily maid service, except that our trash was emptied. Our group had two rooms and neither was supplied with soap, so I assume that it's not provided. I didn't find this problematic. There's a grocery store just around the corner where we picked up some liquid soap.

Breakfast was plentiful and tasty. It's served from 7:30 to 9 and includes rolls, dark bread, jams, cheese, cucumber and tomato slices, yogurt, muesli, fruit, juice, and coffee. The breakfast room was quiet and pleasant.

Internet is available for an extra charge. We didn't use it.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and recommend it to others who don't mind staying in basic accommodations in this pricey city.

ISS is very institutional which reminded me of being back in school. It is a great value for the location. Everything is within walking distance whether the grocery store, pharmacy, restaurants, Mirabell gardens or the old town. The have little lockers in the fridge so ask for a key if you plan to store anything there. They provide utensils, pots and pans so you can cook in their kitchen too.

The staff the weekend I stayed were nice, especially the younger woman who worked the front desk who was very helpful as I was fighting a cold. She looked up which pharmacy was open that Sunday which lucky for me was the one down the street. She also offered advice on natural remedies too.

I did laundry while there. They provided the washing powder. It is self serve so you can choose the settings which I prefer especially when using a dryer.

As mentioned by others, you should be aware of the early morning alarm thanks to the church bells.

This hostel is my least favorite of my Europe trip. The hostel itself is pleasant. It's small and quiet, the breakfast is nice, and the accommodations are cozy but comfortable. However, the desk attendant here was utterly unhelpful for any questions we had as tourists, and worst of all seemed totally uninterested in helping us. The hostel also has a paid system for wifi (€2 per hour), but the attendant goes home at 8pm, so you can't access the Internet at all after that! The location is probably the best thing about this place, being on a nice street of restaurants and shops, but its about a 20 minute walk from the train station, and another 10 or 15 minutes walk to almost any of the attractions in old town. Overall, not a bad place, but not a good one either.

Stayed here 2 nights in a double and we agree with other reviews. One thing to add: Its a bit tricky to find this place the first time. Main entry/front desk is on a walkway that intersects the Linzer-Gasse west of the St. Sebastian church, rather than on the Linzer-Gasse itself. The walkway connects with the Paris-Lodron Strasse to the north and provides a somewhat easier route to places like the Bahnhof. Key points about the Institut: Inexpensive for Salzburg, breakfast very Spartan with weak coffee and juice, dorm ambiance, great location for walking to/from Old Town and train station. We would stay here again and save our money for other stuff.

The Institut is actually a student guest house with some rooms for visitors and is located on a pedestrian street with plenty of restaurants (open until late at night certain evenings) and a couple of grocery stores (Spar & Billa). It is a mere 5-minute walk to either the historical center or the Mirabel gardens.

From the train station, it took only 15 minutes on foot to reach the place. Check-in was at 16h00. When I arrived, I was politely given my key and shown the elevator (in English). My single room was on the 2nd floor facing the little square on the side of the building ( I understand most other rooms face the pedestrian street). It was was clean and spacious. The bed proved to be comfortable enough (just a tad hard for me) and the large desk, practical. The bathroom offered the usual toilet, sink and shower (quick hot water). Towels were provided but no soap/shampoo or blow-dryer. There was a phone but no fan/air-conditioning or t.v. (one in the common room nearby). Free internet (wi-fi) but there was a 2-euro fee/hour to use their computer (old model). A kitchen was available to guests but one had to ask for any pots & pans at the desk. The refrigerator contained locked baskets (for students' use). I presume a key for one of them could be obtained at the desk but I didn't ask. The breakfast included was on the light side: 2 kinds of bread, cheese spread or liver pâté, juice, tea, coffee. Some fruits and yogurt would have been appreciated.

Overall, a practical place, close to the center and reasonably priced for Salzburg (45 euros/night). The staff was polite and helpful at all times. A couple of hallways could have used a light coat of paint, but the place was clean and pleasant although a tad noisy at times (nearby restaurants and a few late coming students at night; also morning bells from nearby churches at 7 a.m.). Still, a good choice for singles or couples on a tight budget.

Tip: buy a Salzburg Card for the duration of your stay. Includes all local attractions and transportation (even outside the town like the Unterberg Bahn, the aerial tramway) for a very cheap price. Most museums are small but still cost 7-10 euros each. They add up quickly.

Budget travelers have to make sacrifices and Institut St. Sebastian is a perfect example. The location is great. 5-10 minute walk to old town. The street outside has a number of food and shopping options. It is currently under construction which is loud in the morning. Others also mentioned the church bells ring every fifteen minutes starting at 6am. There are short rings and I'm guessing a full bell extravaganza at the end of mass. In the 90s when I was there. No A/C was a hardship at times. This should not be a problem 99% of the year. Staff was amazingly helpful(especially Sabine). Wi -fi was 2e for one hour and 5e for the day. It had limited range. My group were in the bunk bed dorms. Comfy enough for a bunk bed. Did have lockers in the room. Keys are provided. Bath was shared. Doubles are also available. Staff leaves at 9pm. The front door is locked and keys are provided. Breakfast was meager but there were bakeries and a grocery store nearby. The key thing to remember is you are staying in a clean room within 5 minutes to old town for 24e. Some of the other issues can be overcome.
