Bus number 25 from the city takes you right to the base of the mountain from which you take the gondola up to the top. When the weather is clear (we had a few clouds) the view is terrific, so don't go on a rainy/cloudy day as you won't get the full effect.
At the top there are trails to walk if you want (many are quite steep) and many photo ops to take advantage of.
Having a Salzburg card will save you the admission fee.
There is a little place to buy food at the top.
If this would be your only opportunity to get to the top of an Austrian Alp, don't miss it!

“Don't miss this trip if you are in Salzburg.”

The ride to the top is awe inspiring and even more so when you arrive at the top. Unbelievable views, great hiking. Worth the bus ride out of town.

“A tough climb but well worth it”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 19, 2014

In an unduly macho moment, I opted to hike the Reitsteig route to the summit of Untersberg, while my wife (always the most sensible of us) decided to take the cable car and meet me at the top. Over four hours later we were reunited (I rather more than the worse for wear).

According to the official Wanderkarte, the Reiststeig route is a "simple path also for families". I am not sure what sort of families the guide writer had in mind. It is certainly well "off piste" for families with toddlers or infants in buggies.

For hikers not used to the combination high altitude and temperature in the low 30s, this is a demanding outing. Most of the trail is through forest, so there are only occasional long distance views across to Salzburg - although these are spectacular (as is the view from the top cable car station of course!).

Having said that, there is a sense of achievement in completing the trek and enjoying the views from the Salzburger Hochthron at 1853 metres above sea level.

Untersberg is located at a height of approx.1740 kms above sea level. To go there you can take bus no 25 from the old town city centre. then take the funicular to go up there.

the day we went it was cloudy. so when we reached up, couldn't get the panoramic view of the city. but we did get some view until the 3/4th way. though the chill and rains was a different experience up there. if the weather is good, you can go for hiking.

Unfortunately the weather was bad (cold and rainy) therefore we were unable to walk on the mountain and see beautiful places :( We returned to the city after walking 10-15 minutes. Go to it only if a weather is good. Buy and use Salzburg Card, otherwise you'll pay a lot for the tickets in this and other places. There is a nice hotel & restaurant "untersberg" near the entrance.
