“Modest Stay”
Reviewed June 2, 2012

Hotel with little comfort, small room, low ceiling, bathroom with unpleasant odor, no air conditioning or minibar, noisy floor (wood), modest breakfast, far from the attractions, noisy (next to the church and the street), expensive, nice staff.

The hotel is conveniently located on a limited vehicle access street near places to eat and drink. It's only a short walk to the tourist area of the old town. Most of the staff were helpful and pleasant. The breakfast selection was not broad enough for my friend but it was a highlight for me as there were dried fruits and nuts to have with my muesli. However, the hotel did not provide any soap or other toileteries in the bathroom.Overall, I'd rate the value for money of the room as average but I've experienced better in other Salzburg hotels on past trips.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The room was spacious and comfortable. The breakfast, included in the price, was great. The price was very good for the standard of room, location and service. On the negative side there was no shower curtain meaning the bathroom floor got wet when the shower was used, it drained and dried quickly but it would be better to prevent it getting wet in the first place. Other complaint is that wifi coverage is poor. Overall the pluses are much greater than the minuses.

I am unable to review this hotel in which we had booked 5 rooms some months prior to going to Salzburg. 7 days before starting our journey we were advised that our rooms were no londer available and we were moved to another hotel some 2-3 kms from the centre of the city. We had no time to make alternative arrangemens and had to accept it. When it came time to settle our bill after 3 days we were told that we could not pay them but the Golden Krone would take the money from the card when we made the booking, we wanted to settle the five rooms individually, following a period of quite nasty telephone calls from our hotel receptionist to the manager at the GK, we finally got to the bottom of the problem, luckily we had two german speakers in our party. The manager at the GK wanted to charge us his rate of 139eu per night as against the actual hotel cost of 89eu per night. He was going to pocket 50eu X 3nights X 5 rooms, making 750 euros for taking our booking and moving us on. BE AWARE an internet booking is not confirmation you will get what you ordered, our party beleive this to be a regular occurance. Our party had to wait for over 1 hour to get confirmation of our bill before we could leave as the MANAGER at the GK was preparing breakfast for 100 guests?????.

I agree with several other reviewers about this hotel. While it was clean, in a central location to the old town and had a good breakfast, my husband and I had a terrible time sleeping with all of the loud drunks stumbling home at late hours of the night. I don't mind the sound of church bells, but 6am is an ungodly hour for them to start clanging. Between the drunks and the early morning church bells, we hardly got any sleep at this hotel.

Also, the front desk staff was rude and inpatient towards me and my husband. We felt more like we were a nuisance than welcomed guests. Even though Rick Steve's said that they would offer a 10% discount for mentioning his travel book, we were told that they did not offer the discount during festival time. This seemed odd to us because we stayed 3 nights and, other than the Saturday night we were there, the hotel did not appear booked up at all.

The rooms, while clean and sufficient, were very boring. There wasn't even one picture on the wall of the wonderfully photogenic Salzburg. Surely, the hotel owners could splurge and buy some nice prints or photos for the rooms in which to showcase their wonderful town and its musical history!

The only good point of this hotel is position, but only if you can stand the noise of bells at every quarter of hour (during the day) and noisy groups of drunk people late at night. Tiny room, the door of the bathroom didn't close, if you are fatter you coult not sit on the toilet, as the space between the wall and the shower cabin is very small.
