We arrived late morning and as the driveway was full we parked in a gravel patch across the road. We followed some well hidden signs right around what would be the the obvious entrance to the building up the steps and around the corner to the furthest doorway we could find and this is where the directions came to an end. After much calling out and knocking and walking around finally the cleaning lady came to our aid. We eventually got to our room which was very basic and a bit smelly. Furnishings basic and flooring lifting. Sadly the cleaner and ourselves did not have a language in common and she was friendly and smiling but unable to give us any instruction as to how to get to town or how things worked with regard to coming and going and breakfast. We found our way to town using our phone maps and although the walk is not a quick one but it is a nice one. You are positioned behind the castle and so to get to town you have to walk up to the castle and over and down the steps to town. As a lot of people do when visiting Salzburg we stayed out for dinner and a concert which finished at 10 and we walked back arriving by about 10.20pm. We had a hell of a time finding our way to the back door in the dark - not one security light came on to light our way. We got to the back door which was locked and as we could not see the lock we felt around to try to open the door but had no luck. We were none the wiser as to how to get in so my husband rang the 'night bell' that he'd seen during the day. After repeatedly ringing the bell the owner (identified the next morning) put her head out of the window and basically told us not to wake her and slammed it shut again. We realised we were on our own so I tried the key again and managed to find the lock and it worked and we got in. None of us could shower as the shower drain was blocked. The sheets were filthy - you could tell they had been slept on already and hadn't been changed. I used my sleeping bag. In the morning we were treated with disdain. There was no belated welcome or even feigned interest in our difficulty in getting in. She couldn't care less and was more interested in fussing over her preferred guests. It was a nice place to leave.
