The pension is located just outside of Salzburg in a quiet residential area. Bus stop one block from the pension takes you into old town in about 15 minutes. The room and bathroom was one of the larger ones we had on our trip. Breakfast was wonderful and the innkeeper keeps a bowl of fresh fruit (we had pears--delicious) in the lobby for the guests. Also good local restaurants if you choose to not eat in old town. Innkeeper very sweet, helpful, and friendly. Can't say enough about this hotel. Really happy with our stay there.

Conveniently located on a four kilometer guest-house-filled stretch of the two lane avenue Moosstrasse, Pension Frauenschuh is more like a boutique hotel in the finest New York tradition. Owned and operated by the family Frauenschuh that resides there, this wonderfully accommodating purpose-built guest house is well set back from the main road (Moosstrasse), quiet, tastefully appointed, new, and sparkling clean.
Our guest room (#316) was a full suite more than ample for three adults and worth every penny of the quoted tariff. Nonetheless, our hostess provided us with a cash discounted rate on checkout of 156.75 euro , all taxes and full buffet breakfast included.
You may access their website for full rate info by googling “Frauenschuh” and “at” for Austria (add the triple w the two dots in between and you have the web address). Prices range from as low as 65 euro single to 200 euro plus for a fully occupied suite. But if you are traveling as a family with children, this family run hotel is certainly prepared to respond to your email requests for a family discount. And they are dog pet friendly (at 7 euro per day extra – “without food”).
The attractive, charming, and very friendly yet polished young proprietors own and operate their guesthouse hands-on from reception to buffet breakfast, with grace and style – it is the little touches that make the difference (like the free apples in a bowl available at reception).
The included buffet breakfast is ample with coffee, teas, eggs to your order, assorted hams and salamis, five kinds of sliced cheese, eight varieties of foil wrapped cheese, and waxed cheeses soft and solid, eight varieties of fresh breads, do it yourself toast, tub jams, jellies, butter, and margarine, four varieties of cold cereals, cold milk, fruit juice (grape, peach, orange), five varieties of commercial yogurts, and fresh fruit (cantelope, grapes, apples, bananas, kiwi). The breakfast area and ambiance are authentic modern and Austrian.
But mostly it is the rooms themselves which set this pension apart from the rest. Authentic, modern, and the best of Austrian neatness and style, the rooms are very well appointed. Our suite had plenty of luxury perks from fresh guest slippers and terrycloth robes, to lots of towels including those available on a heated towel rack. The large LCD TV came with remote and the 40-50 channels on offer included CNN and Skynews. Two complimentary glass bottles of water, and a chocolate treat for each guest were added perks. The bathroom was fully appointed with every convenience and featured great styling. The bathroom was separated from the bedroom seating area by the entrance foyer which also boasted a fully equipped kitchen with glasses, plates, cooking utensils, cutlery, stove, sink, and stocked fridge. Room entrance is by electronic swipe card. Adjacent to the bedroom were a dining table with benches and an in suite Jacuzzi tub obviously appealing to honeymooners (or those traveling with pet turtles).
Upscale finishes were the norm in this full suite with stylish appointments, plenty of lighting, and comfortable bedding (sleeping up to four adults); mattresses were firm with feather pillows, comforters and fine linens complimenting the tasteful décor, and the sit out balcony with view of the neighbouring houses. The rear of the home is open to farm fields groomed in a way particularly neat and Austrian, and rooms facing the rear boast a view of the surrounding mountains.
All rooms have telephone, radio, and free internet access (from your laptop), and other facility amenities include plenty of free private parking, children’s playground, large open grass exercise field, rental bicycles, sauna, steam bath, tanning beds, and the option of enjoying breakfast on the large outdoor terrace or private garden (dogs are not allowed in the breakfast room).
The municipal bus stop on Moosstrasse is directly in front of the hotel and there are plenty of tourist brochures neatly organized in the lobby.
Sound of Music Sights and other nearby attractions...
Pension Frauenschuh is located in a semi-rural setting but so close to the center of Salzburg. Very close by is the Moos Riding Stable for those looking to ride horses (great mountain hiking trails are further distant). A major recreational outdoor swimming pool and sports complex is only four kms away at the Leopoldskron Pool complex --- located across the street from the Leopoldskron Palace, which brings us to the Sound of Music.
For reasons only those who grew up with the movie understand, seeing the sights where the von Trapp story was filmed has an undeniable attraction. Why pay for a tour? To find the “lake” where the children and Maria fell off the boat, and the backyard patio of the von Trapp home (with its incomparable finned horse gates by that same lake), you need to locate the Leopoldskrom Palace. From Pension Frauenschuh, turn left onto Moosstrasse, proceed past the traffic light, and continue another 0.5 km and turn right at the OMV gas/petrol station onto Firmian Strasse. Continue for 0.8 km and you will arrive at the lake, adjoining the Leopolskron Palace (the von Trapp dining patio) and the Leopolskron swimming pool complex. Note the actual palace grounds are not open to the public though you may still see some tourists wondering about the von Trapp/Leopoldskrom deck at the rear of the palace. From there with the good free tourist map in hand (ask your hosts or obtain your copy at the tourism office in the old city) head for Nonnberg Abbey (where the real Maria and Captain actually married and where “the” gates of the convent where the movie children went looking for Maria are located) just below and to the right of the citadel fortress which can be seen from the front of the Leopldskrom Palace. You’ll need a good map and a keen sense of navigation (and a small car) to drive to the abbey but you can also climb the 200 or so steps from the other (old city) side. It is worth the trip for the view and to see the convent church even if you are not a fan of the movie. Lastly, you can visit the gazebo (where many of the movie love songs were sung) at the Hellbrunn Palace and botanical grounds, a good 15 minute drive from the abbey along the B150 Hellbrunnerstrasse-Alpenstrasse Road (follow the signs). Evidently the home exteriors standing in for the Von Trapp residence can also be found around though we weren’t successful in that quest.
Given Pension Frauenschuh has so much to offer and was well occupied during our October stay, I would strongly advise booking in advance (see their website).
If the price is too high for your budget, or if the hotel is full, I can also suggest you check out Haus Steiner (see my review) a cheaper alternative conveniently located just up the street also on Moosstrasse.
I am always interested in your feedback; if you find this review helpful (or not), I always appreciate your quick click of that yes/no button.

I first came here to this hotel in April 2007. It was much better than I expected, and is quite possibly the best accomadation I've ever stayed in. OK at the time I was mainly used to scruffy hotels in Skegness, but this hotel was extremely clean and all the furniture and facilities were lovely and new. The view from the balcony of my room was fantastic, with a manificent view of Untersburg and other mountains and fields in the distance. The hotel is based in a nice quiet neighbourhood, but with a bus running to the town centre every 20 min from directly outside the hotel and it don't take long to get into the centre of Salzburg (about 10 min). If you fancy a walk it takes about 25 min to the centre and it has plenty pubs along the way, so you can get yourself merry for when you get into the centre of Salzburg for further drinking. The hotel itself offers a nice big TV in all rooms, Internet acces via wireless and wired connection. If you stay there for 10 nights or more you get 20% discount on one of your nights. The breakfast very good if you like cold meat and freshly prepared every morning. The owners of the Pension Frauenschuh, are very helpful and are more than willing to give you tourist information about Salzburg and arrange tours for you etc. All in all this hotel gets 10/10 easily by my standards. In fact I liked it so much I returned 4 months later as I promissed the owners just for the hell of it and I plan to return again sometime very soon for another relaxing break at Pension Fraunshcuh!
