We enjoyed our Luxus Doppelzimmer inn this historic hotel along the pedestrian thoroughfare, Linder Gasse. Getting there was a trick, with a car. Google Maps failed us for only the second time on a weeklong road trip, so we went old school, found a lucky spot nearby and hoofed it to the hotel. Once there, I was given great directions along with the code to lower the barricades and allow us to drive right up and deposit our luggage. Then to the central parking structure with our hotel pass. Once there, the location is great, with easy access to both sides of the river. Our suite was large and comfortable and a good price for the area. Service was great at the front desk and at the bar, which was a great place to wind down the evening.

The Stadtkrug is the quintessential Salzburg hotel, reflecting the historic nature of the city.
Words like: quant...charming...rustic....come to mind.
We booked a small suite at $450 for the night, hoping for a 'special' stay in our first visit to Salzburg.
What we didn't know was the hotel has no air conditioning and unfortunately we hit a 90+F day and the hotel room was stifling hot. Open the windows? Sure but our 2nd floor room overlooked the pedestrian walkway in the old city and with 000's of tourists roaming the street into the early morning hours it was impossible to sleep.
At the price paid and with the high hotel rating we sure expected better!!

We got a great room at the last minute (and we were SO thankful) and were delighted with the room and the staff! The hotel was 400 years old when Mozart was a boy, so boy o boy is it old.

Cut out a lot of the steps to the monastery by taking the elevator to the top floor and pop out the back way.

Lots of shopping and an easy walk along the old town roads with many, many cafes along the way.

Wife and I stayed for 3 nights in early July during our honeymoon. Several good aspects which are covered by other reviews (good location, historical building, friendly/helpful staff, large rooms, etc.). However, the following bad aspects have me rating this a 3:

1) There is no aircon and with the weather beautiful and hot, we wanted to keep the windows open at night to cool the room down. However, since we were given a room on the 1st floor overlooking the pedestrian mall below, the noise levels would not allow this. Bar patrons and inconsiderate folks made noise at all hours of the night and the lorries making deliveries at 5am kept the noise going. The only reason we got much sleep at all was because the hotel provided a small table fan which kept the air moving in the room.

2) I booked well in advance and for our honeymoon requested a quiet room on a high floor with a view. We were given exactly the opposite. As noted above, we were placed on the 1st floor overlooking the pedestrian mall and the windows of the flats just across from the hotel. Not quiet, not on a high floor, and absolutely no view (other than of the people in the flats sitting in their windows smoking in the evening/night).

3) Another minor nit is the breakfast. Hotel states it is served well into the morning, but when we sat down around 8 to 8:30am the 1st two mornings, the offerings had been picked through and there were several items which were not replaced (soft boiled eggs, some cheeses, ...). In addition, we were not allowed to sit at the front near the windows as these tables had been cleared and we were told by the staff the "tables were being readied for the evening meal" (at 8:30am in the morning?). We ended up going to one of the nearby bakeries for some nice, fresh pastries instead.

Overall, I would probably agree with many of the 4+ star reviews if you can get a quiet room on a high floor at the back.

Loved the location of this hotel. The front desk people were very helpful in calling cabs and making suggestions on activities to visit in Salzburg. Only downside is that there was no AC and it was a warm weekend when we visited. Nice breakfast with made to order eggs. Would recommend this hotel.
