The Bergland is on the east side of the Salzach river which you must cross to get into the old town. However, the walk is a very pleasant kilometer in an area of town more frequented by pedestrians than motorists. The rooms are large and airy. The furnishings (armchair, bed, desk) are more European austere than American overstuffed. Think Ikea, but that seems to be the pattern in family-run, or non-chain hotels. The area also did not lack in restaurants, so we were quite well served there. There are some parking spaces in the front of the hotel. Breakfast is adequate, but mostly self-service. If you are in Salzburg to see Salzburg, this is an economical, very clean place to spend your nights. If you are looking to be pampered, this is not for you.
Oh yes, if you speak German to the man at the front desk, no matter how fractured, he will answer you in German. However, he speaks perfect English. Incidentally, the date was October 2008, but Tripadvisor does not allow dates more than a year in the past.
