“Not Four Star”
Reviewed October 7, 2012

“My wife and I with five other couples recently undertook a private four week tour of central Europe. This is our fifth European trip in the last seven years. Our itinerary included a four night stay at the Hotel Neutor, a four star designated hotel in Salzburg. After our experience we believe that this rating needs to be downgraded.
The staff were always friendly and helpful, however the rooms were very small with nowhere to put suitcases other than on the floor which further reduced the miniscule available floor area. We have stayed in inner city hotels in Paris, Rome and London and this room size was the smallest we have ever seen. Our group approached reception to seek relocation to larger rooms which appeared to be available in the annex over the road. One couple were given a door entry card to a room which had not been made up after the previous guests.
None of the hotel rooms had an English speaking BBC World or CNN TV channel, the only hotel to lack this basic service in our whole trip.
The rooms reeked of an indescribable odour.
The breakfast was served in a small restaurant where the only available fruit was from a bowl of apples.
One of the couples from our group returned to their room after a days sight seeing to find it had not been made up since the night before.
Two other couples returned to their rooms after a day out to find that the old bathroom towels had been removed but not replaced with new ones.
Another couple returned to find that their door entry card no longer worked. Reception advised them it was because they had checked out, obviously they hadn’t !
The hotel thus was thus poorly managed for a four star hotel”
We certainly would not recommend this hotel to anyone expecting four star accommodation

That about says it all for my experience staying at this dive, dump, deplorable place. Someone had their passport/wallet stolen right out from under them during breakfast. Another person has items stolen from their room ... the list goes on and on. Do yourself a huge favor and stay away from this place!!!

Room Tip: Find another place to stay in Salzburg! Anywhere else will do!

We had booked three rooms for four days. This is not a cheap hotel by any imagination, though it was centrally located. On the last day (Aug.28 2012) I and my daughter were in the breakfast room, with hardly a handful of guests. . She had her wallet stolen there, She used her credit card that morning and was sure had the wallet with her. After a thorough futile search we complained to the front desk, the staff advised us to leave the relevant info and would contact the police herself. As we had to travel to Vienna that morning (already late by three hours by now) we took the offer.Later when my daughter went in person two days later found out that the police complaint was never given. In spite of the fact that her mother in law lives in Salzburg the callous behaviour of the hotel staff enraged and disgusted me.

On the second day we were getting ready for a wedding reception there were no towels in our room, had to scramble from the other room. Response, ran out of towels. In the night they bring two huge bathrobes ( I am a petite person).
Think twice before you rate them.

Great location near Salzburg's picturesque old town. Staff were very polite, friendly and helpful. But the room was a let down.

Dingy, small and very basic facilities. The safe wasn't attatched to the wall, the TV remote and a light fixture were broken. There was also no shower curtain or soap in the bathroom.

Overall fine but don't expect a 4 * hotel.

Hotel Neutor is less than a five minute walk to the Old Town in Salzburg. The hotel staff was extremely friendly and helpful. The rooms seemed a little dingy, which others had mentioned. The cleanliness was ok. The breakfast was good and the hotel did have a small amount of parking.

Overall, the hotel was decent. Given how easy Salzburg was to get in and out of, it might be worth your money to stay further out and save.

Our Rail Europe train was stopped due to a problem ahead of us and Salzburg was as far as we were going to be able to get tonight. We got onto a hotel discount site and found this - Schwaerzler Hotel Neutor- 4-star with amazing photos. Great price. We immediately booked it. When we followed the map guide it wasn't completely accurate- sounded like we had to make about 15 turns, but really, when you get through the tunnel, it's almost immediately ahead of you on the right. It didn't look too great from the outside- needs new paint. But we had the res and we checked in- very warm, stuffy lobby. But the attendant came out, was quick and genial, and we got to our room. 4-star in Europe and 4-star in US don't always mean the same thing. However, this hotel gets four-star because everything works well, and the staff will do whatever to make us you have what you need. Aspirin? Check. US electrical adaptor because your bag is locked in the train station? Check. Candy bar? Well, the attendant didn't have one but he was willing to just give us cookies since he didn't have a candy bar to sell us. 24-hour service by an attendant who is also the 24-hour bartender. I love this place because it's relaxed, has great people, clean rooms with good beds and all working parts, and a beautiful bathroom. All marble tile on the walls, polished ceramic floors, not a speck of mold to be found (certainly wont deny the other reviewer the mold in their room, but we saw only spotless marble). The rooms don't have A/C (at least ours didn't), but they have a fan in our room and giant casement windows that open two ways for ventilation. That was all we needed in mid-June. Most importantly- and I can't underscore this enough- the location is the best asset. Old Salzburg, the castle, the Mozartis area, the river, great restaurants and bars- literally a short walk one way or the other. If I come back to Salzburg this is a serious contender. I can't say anything bad about this place.

The best feature of this hotel is its location, right next to the Siegmundstor tunnel entrance to the city. It’s only a 5-10 minute walk to the old town center, Mozart’s house, etc. There is free parking at the hotel rear if you can find a space. The breakfast buffet is good and plentiful. This is an excellent base for exploring Salzburg on foot provided you are comfortable with the few oddities that we experienced. Our bathroom had no shower curtain (and no shower rail in any case), which made showering a little difficult. Also, our carpet appeared not to be cleaned either before or during our stay. The swarm of bus tourists which swept through the hotel and buffet at breakfast time was another minor annoyance. Otherwise, we enjoyed our stay and for the price, this is probably as good a base as any in Salzburg.
