I really liked the Hohenstauffen. Having stayed at a rather bland hotel in Vienna prior to visiting Salzburg, the old rooms of this hotel, each decorated individually, really charmed me, and made me feel at home. Our room had a four poster bed, a little table and chairs, and a couch. All we were expecting was a double bed! None of it matched, but that hardly mattered. It meant that late one evening, our little group could gather in our room and enjoy some local beers bought at reception. The other rooms our friends were staying in were just as spacious, even if they didn't have all the furniture.
The hotel was fifteen minutes walk from the main streets of Salzburg, and if you ask reception to point you in the right direction, you can take a pretty route along the riverbank all the way. We found our room well-heated, although a couple of our companions were a little chilly before they switched the heating on late afternoon. The breakfast probably would get a bit limited after staying more than a couple of nights, but we enjoyed the range of spreads, hams and cheeses on offer with fresh rolls and steaming coffee. As soon as you emptied your coffeepot, the hotel owner would offer to replenish it for you.
If I had to mention any bad points, then I suppose that the lack of restaurants nearby for dinner was a little frustrating, certainly if you were staying for a few days. But the hotel is a very short walk from the train station, and there are several buses running from the station to the pretty surroundings of Salzburg, so it's excellently connected. Also, a hugely petty concern I know, but the light in the bathroom was blinding! Perhaps toning it down a bit would be more conducive to a nice relaxing bath?!
I think the couple that run this hotel deserve a special mention. They were extremely kind, friendly and welcoming. They couldn't have been more helpful. I know that my friends and I would definitely stay here again if we revisited Salzburg.
