“Fairytale Wedding - First Class Hotel”
Reviewed January 19, 2013

I have previously reviewed this Hotel as we fell in love with it some time ago! However the Hotel Bristol definitely warrants a second review and a very big thank you from all our family and friends!

As you will have guessed from the title we have just celebrated our Wedding here and were joined by approximately 40 of our friends and family. We have been planning this for some time and Christine Maier, who you will see justifiably mentioned in a number of reviews, has had to contend with our numerous queries and requests which she has always done with a smile.

Emails were always responded to immediately and advice given to assist our guests in maximising their stay in Salzburg.

We got married at Mirabell Schloss on the 29th December 2012 and the day was perfect. Our guests had started to arrive from the 27th December and a number of them chose to stay and celebrate New Year with us at the Hotel.

On arrival at this Hotel apart from the impressive Reception area the one thing that sets this Hotel apart is the reception that you will get from the team here. This Hotel is extra special because of the team that run it!

All of our guests were greeted by name, which to some of our guests who are seasoned travellers was a welcome surprise. My parents love to have tea and coffee in their room, however a kettle is not automatically provided in Hotels in Salzburg. One was immediately provided on request along with a jug of fresh milk.

On arrival you will be given a tour of the Hotel and information about the City. The Hotel is perfectly located next to Mirabell Gardens on Markatplatz.

We had selected a Junior Suite, as I wanted a room large enough to allow the Bridesmaids to prepare with me on the morning of the wedding. We stayed in Room 370 and it was perfect for this. You will see from the photos attached!

The rooms in this Hotel are all different but all have high ceilings and classical, elegant furnishings.

Our wedding was organised by Erika Hoelbling of Event in Motion. Erika liaised with Christine and between these lovely ladies they ensured that the wedding went without a hitch!

I was whisked by horse and carriage to the ceremony and following a champagne reception we took all of our guests to Hohensalzburg Festung for gluhwein and roasted chestnuts on the terrace before lunch in the Waapensaal (banqueting hall). We then returned for a champagne reception at the Hotel Bristol in the Sketch Bar and Dinner in the Crystal Room. The arrangements for the evening were overseen by Herr Peter who had helped us select a traditionally Austrian menu for the evening. Herr Peter was available to meet with me and reassure me the day before the wedding (nervous bride!) and add little extras in like ensuring that the whole area was candlelit for the drinks reception etc...

You will see from the pictures attached just how beautiful the Crystal Room is and this room is also where breakfast is served each day. Breakfast here is great. The eggs are cooked to perfection and if for some reason you do not think so they will be whisked away and instantly replaced.

Having got married on the 29th December we were still ready to party on New Years Eve and following some helpful advice from Christine and Herr Peter we chose to have an early dinner at the Hotel and then head into the City to listen to the bands before returning just before midnight. As we had children in our group this worked perfectly. Room 370 is so large and has a perfect view of the fireworks, that our party of 20+ celebrated at midnight with champagne in our room! We then went to rejoin the party in the Sketch Bar. A live band was playing and a midnight feast of goulash, sausages etc.. was being served. If I am totally honest we did have an issue with the menu for New Years Eve as there has been a change of chef and the menu had not been communicated however this was resolved by Herr Peter. Being serenaded by the excellent singer (Country Rose was a real favourite!) at our table helped make up for the initial confusion.

On New Years Day we headed out to Filzmoos (a local ski resort) for a sleigh ride and lunch at Unterhofalm before a spot of tobogganing and back to the Hotel Bristol. This was a perfect start to 2103! The Hotel Bristol even checked on the weather in Filzmoos and showed me the snow on the web cam before we left for our trip and again this just shows the level of service that you can expect.

Salzburg is a beautiful city, the Hotel Bristol is a great Hotel but the key ingredient is how friendly the team are. I saw a recent review that said that the staff ignore you at Reception. we have never experienced this, On the day we left Christine and I both shed a tear. I was slightly worried that Christine's tears may have been of relief at the departure of the neurotic bride but the card we have since received wishing us well in our married lives confirms that we have made friends for life at this Hotel!

We are already planning our next trip! A number of our family and friends will also be adding this Hotel to their list of must visits again in the future.

Room Tip: All rooms are excellent.

Perfectly-located next to Mirabell Gardens, across from the house in which Mozart composed his first works as a boy, this small, family-run hotel is a small jewel. Elegant throughout, with large rooms tastefully decorated in Old World style, the Bristol is your most romantic option in a romantic city. The restaurant and bar are excellent, and the service at every level is refines and extremely courteous. Manager Gudrun Höchtl attends to each guest as though they were a member of her family. Our group of 10 spent Christmas here this year (as we do many years), and the ambience was magical, with carols and some "cheer" around the tree on Christmas Eve before a glorious Christmas Dinner. As always, each group member was charmed by the hotel. Another memorable stay, and amazing value considering their rate is much lower than other European hotels that claim to be 5 star and charge much more. Can't recommend the Bristol highly enough.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of the Makartplatz.

We had interconnecting suite rooms at the front of the hotel overlooking the Markatplatz and Mozart's apartment which is a quaint museum now and worth a visit. The rooms were grand with high ceilings and classical furnishings. Being a historic building the floor boards did creak a bit but it wasn't a major issue. It is right next door to the Holy Trinity Church whose bells chime at 7am which can be an unwanted alarm clock at times. Breakfast was extensive and the staff exceptional. The restaurant is slightly expensive but it comes with silver service and is in a beautiful Crystal room. Overall we had an exceptional stay at this hotel that complemented the beautiful city that Salzburg is.

The Hotel Bristol is located in a great location - cross the bridge and you are in the Altstadt with many shops, cafes and restaurants to choose from. Staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. Our specific room was a bit small but very clean. Breakfast was plentiful. Would definitely stay here again.

We spent two nights at Hotel Bristol. The room was clean and comfortable with an excellent bathroom, and the location is excellent if you don't want to stay outside of the old city, but remain within walking distance of all the main sites. My only complaint, which sounds petty, is that the reception staff seemed to prefer answering the phone than dealing with the people in front of them; it wasn't a one-off and didn't only happen (repeatedly) to me.

The Bristol is a great stay, it is really close to the old town, the river and the remaining Salzburg landmarks. We stayed on the 4th floor, at the front and what a view in the morning. Breakfasts are the usual high quality you would find in any good 4/5* but with a Euro twist (cheese and ham). The bar is nice, and we couldn't fault it. The rooms are well appointed.

Room Tip: Stay at the front

The Bristol manages the trick of being quite grand but still feels run by the family. The staff were charming and very helpful. Our room was beautifully decorated and had a great view of the castle. The location is good because you are away from the cramped Old Town but not too far. The short walk across the footbridge to the Old Town is a pleasure and the view is magical, especially at night when the snow has fallen.
The restaurant is very good and allow plenty of time to enjoy the huge range of goodies at breakfast.

Room Tip: It's worth paying for a room at the front to get a good view of the castle.
