A delightful tour. The young lady who conducted the tour was full of enthusiasm and fun. Even if you had only seen the film once it would be worth going on, just to hear all about how the film and real life family differed, also interesting local information. The scenery is magnificent and sufficient time is given to enjoy an applestudel at a very pretty village. A very enjoyable morning.

As an avid Sound of Music fan, I was keen to see the filming sites from the film. However I knew from reading beforehand that many of the Old Town sites are in pedestrian areas and the only way to see these is by walking. We therefore elected not to do the half day specific Sound of Music Tour but to take the hop on hop off tour that passes and stops by the Leopoldskron and Frohnburg castle (the 2 villas that provided the Von Trapp house scenes) and Hellbrun castle (where the gazebo is situated). The hop on hop off was great for this reason, we got an overview of Sazburg from the bus and then were able to get off at the sites mentioned above that are outside the town and take pictures etc, although again I knew that the 2 villas are privately owed and you cannot go inside these . We also were able to walk up to the entrance of Nonnberg abbey as the tour stops nearby. I would consider this tour better value for money than the full Sound of Music tour as it is about 1/3 of the price and you have more flexibility around your stops. There is also a Sound of Music commentary on the bus as well as the Salzburg commentary.

In addition we took a separate half day tour to the Salzgammer region (lakes and mountains) and this I would really recommend. We had an excellent guide (Bianca) and travelled to St Gilgen, took the boat along the lake to St Wolfgang where Bianca showed us the White Horse Inn and the famous church and had some free time before travelling back to Salzburg via Mondsee (no stop however here). The tour was through stunning scenery and our guide was friendly and knowledgable. I priced doing this trip by public transport and the tour worked out around the same price, so given the additional guided information and stress free travelling, it was money well spent. Our young kids really enjoyed these tours too so great all round!

Pretty much what we expected. Our traditionally dressed guide was great. She kept us well informed about the factual happenings and events as well as those from the movie. She had a lovely voice and led the singing of 80 of us on the bus well.
On the way to the Church of Mondsee we had an unexpected stop at a hillside luge ride. It was pretty much expected that everyone would pay for a ride, we did and it was fun. However the staff at the luge where extremely rude, they made no attempt to speak any English, rushed everyone and were totally unsympathetic and unhelpful to the 4 young American students who fell off their toboggans and suffered quite nasty grazes.
If you are a Sound of Music fan and love beautiful mountain/lake scenery then I'd recommend this tour - it was 4 hrs long.

Firstly, to be clear, as there seem to be several Salzburg operators calling their tours "The Original" Sound of Music tour - our tour was with the yellow coach of GrayLine/Albus, (NOT Panorama tours, or Bob's tours) and was the 4hr S of M tour (NOT the hop on/off round city bus which is also yellow and branded SofM).

The tour started from MirabellePlatz and visited various sites in the city and suburbs where movie scenes were filmed. We stopped for 10mins at Hellbrun to see the famous gazebo although we were uncertain as to it's authenticity as it looks a lot smaller than the one in the movie. We also stopped at Schloss Leopoldskron (lake scenes). We then headed out of town and alongside Fuschlsee (castle - opening scenes) where we rather expected to stop. Indeed the Panorama tours bus in front of us pulled in but we chugged on by, stopping instead at a hillside toboggan dry slope where the owner was obviously a pal of our guide. We were encouraged to buy a toboggan ride which if you had kids was probably great fun but not why we'd paid for the tour. After viewing some scenic lakes we finished with an hour in Mondsee (church - wedding scenes) then back to Salzburg.

This was to be the highlight of our holiday and frankly the quality of the guide was going to make or break the tour. Sadly it tended towards the latter. The essential info was imparted but in an offhand, almost cynical sort of way. Yes we all know the movie is largely a work of fiction as the storyline bears only a passing resemblance to the real Von Trapps but there was no need to constantly emphasise that. Having read other reviews my wife was expecting a SofM enthusiast, our guy sounded bored (his catch phrase was "but we don't care" - you know who you are). And where we have read of other guides who led and encouraged a good singalong on the way home, our guide just switched on the CD then chatted to the driver.

No technical issues, ie hotel pickup was punctual, bus was comfortable, audio was audible, guide was knowledgeable. But in terms of an "experience" with a wee bit of wow factor? No, basically this was best described as average.

My tip would be to tour the city/suburbs sites using the hop-on/off bus, which also has a commentary I believe, and costs about half the price of the tour. Also you could visit Hellbrun Schloss properly (if you wish) whilst looking at the Gazebo in the gardens, thus saving the need to go back later. Then for the out of town locations take your car, or a service bus along by the Fuschlsee and back by Mondsee. There are one or two excellent guide books available to help pinpoint the locations, or ever-useful Google for free.

Whatever you do I hope you enjoy your SofM experience.

PS We're not normally into culture as such (museums etc) but on this trip we bought Salzburg Cards which gave free entry to a number of places from museums to a chairlift to a boat-trip to a brewery and found them excellent value. Salzburg is a beautiful city.

Salzburg is a great City to visit since it provides a lovely view from the top of the Fortress and plenty to do. It's the City of Mozart and it's close to the Sound of Music movie locations. We took the Salzburg and Lake District bus tour with Grayline. The tour guide provided horrible customer service. She was rude and incompetent. She would literally sigh several times on the bus speaker when explaining the history of the area to the group. It seemed like she just didn't want to be there. There were also often times where she'd literally stop and tell people to hurry up and give them dirty looks (followed by a comment to the German speakers in the group) when someone wasn't walking close enough to the group. Two individuals were walking a few steps ahead of her (literally 2-3 steps ahead) at one point and she told them to let her lead and be at the front of the group in a very rude manner. I've never seen such terrible service.

The lake district is very lovely and the best part was taking the boat across the gorgeous lake, however I recommend trying a different way of visiting Salzburg and the lake district.
