“Perfectly situated, Beautifully furnished”
Reviewed June 3, 2009

You could not ask for a better situated hotel than the Goldener Hirsch. Getreidegasse is the main pedestrian street of Salzburg, and this hotel is in the midst of it. You would think that it would be noisy and touristy, but once you walk into its doors, it seems as though you're walking into a friend's comfortable hunting lodge in the Alps. Much care and personality has gone into the decoration of its public spaces and rooms, with antiques that have been modified to meet modern guests' needs and spacious bathrooms. Yes, it can seem like a maze trying to get to your room, but that is part of the charm of this boutique hotel. Since it is a small hotel, the front desk and bell staff of two per shift is all that you need. They provided us with warm greetings and when asked, helpful assistance. We did not have the opportunity to try their restaurants but will save that for another trip.

This hotel is in the perfect position to appreciate Salzburg in all its glory. It is on the old Getreidegasse and is just a few doors down from Mozart's Birthplace. Everything is an easy walk away and this makes for a very pleasant sightseeing trip. Also, the service is very good. The people at the front desk speak English fluently and are more than helpful when asked about trips and excursions, as well as restaurants. We did enjoy our stay here. However, it is worth mentioning that the breakfasts are very expensive, 30 Euros per person! It is well worth trying to get a room rate that includes breakfasts. Because this is a very old hotel inevitably the rooms are smaller than one would expect in a newer
place but our room had lovely antique furniture and a lovely ambience.

Great location in the 'Old town', within comfortable walking distance to everything. Very friendly and helpful staff. Large, clean, well decorated and furnished room, in our case with no view, but with a small sitting room with a second tv and minibar. Superb bathroom. Comfortable beds.

Not much negative...mini bar prices a joke (miniature scotch 10.50 euros! A whole bottle costs 15!)..I can't understand why hotels price minibars at a level which deter possible users...if they charged half the cost they'd still make a profit and offer a useful service! The price of a buffet breakfast at 29 euros is also a bit over the top.
Otherwise can heartily recommend this hotel for its understated luxury, friendliness and position.

We were only staying one night because of our tightly-scheduled tour of Bavaria and the Black Forest, but, as soon as we entered this room, I wanted to stay here the entire trip.

We booked this hotel online with points and were upgraded to an exceptional suite (room 22). Even if we had paid for it, it would've been well worth it. For my money, I would've asked for the suite. Better to splurge and get the dream rather than miss it by a few dollars.

The suite had a small foyer, living room, huge bathroom, and a separate bedroom that was one step up from the main floor with its own office niche. The view was into the courtyard, but that was the only drawback. I marked this as plush, but that doesn't quite capture the essence of this luxury hotel. It had an aura of aristocracy without any smugness. The bathroom was so perfectly appointed that I was actually enticed to take a bath - a rarity in hotels for sure. On one side of the old townhouse is the main entrance with the reception area. On the opposite side is the door that opens to the old narrow shop-lined streets of Salzburg. This is the way you will be going in and out of the hotel. If you walk out and go to the right, it's a very short distance to Mozart's birthplace.

If you are having your car parked (valet only), drive right up to the front of the hotel. It looks as though you can't because the main roads fork. We drove around for a little while looking for a place to park the car temporarily until we realized we could just drop it off out front. The staff was extremely accommodating. We checked out a tad late, left our bags and car, and walked around the city for most of the day. The staff continued to treat us as honored guests long after check-out.

Be sure to use the elevators when toting the luggage to and from the room.

My husband and I stayed at the Hotel Goldener Hirsch last week and had a wonderful experience. Everyone at the hotel was very nice and helpful. The hotel is lovely, decorated like an upscale Alpine lodge. Our room was great with a really nice bathroom. The location was fantastic and we were able to walk everywhere in the old and new town. Wish all of our hotels throughout the rest of our trip had been this nice!
