We arrived at the hotel and were greeted At the door by concierge who took our bags straight off us and valet parked our car. We were upgraded too, to a beautifully decorated large room with sitting area, with bathroom and separate loo. So two loos which was fab. The decor in the room was gorgeous very antique and typically Austrian. Huge comfy bed with thick fluffy duvets and pillows. The hotel is situated on the pedestrianised shopping street. So you walk straight out into the heart of the old town. The reception staff were so attentive and nothing was too much for them. We asked about classical music concerts, they recommended one at the chapel in the Mirabell palace. It was amazing!!! Just a piano and cello playing Mozart, Bach, Debussy and more. There were only around 20 of us in the small venue. It's was beautiful, atmospheric and very moving. We also went on the panoramic sound of music tour. The hotel arranged it for us and we were picked up directly from the hotel reception and the cost was charged to our room. There was a turn down service and choccie left on pillow. This hotel is all about being made to feel special. We didn't breakfast in the hotel so can't comment. To sum up though fabulous hotel in a beautiful city.

I recently enjoyed a very, very nice stay in Salzburg at the Goldener Hirsch. It is in the absolutely best location in one of the most beautiful small cities in Europe. The hotel matches the setting to a tee -- itself a highlight of a trip to Salzburg.

I was lucky enough to be upgraded not just to a suite, but to a large series of rooms -- all with traditional Tyrollean charm. In fact the room was so large, it took me a second day to even discover the back sitting room.

The beds were furnished with incredibly comfortable down bedding. The bath full luxury condition despite being a very old building. Nothing was spared in combining the essence of tradition and the luxury of modern detail.

While I was at the hotel for business, very much looking forward to a personal trip in the summer to enjoy the hotel even more.

Room Tip: I was across the street from the main hotel and enjoyed that very much

There certainly is much to like about the Hotel Goldener Hirsch.

First and foremost, the place screams old world Tyrolian/Austrian charm. It is in abundance throughout the entire hotel. Right down to all the staff wearing traditional clothing. The staff was very personable, helpful and professional, especially at the front desk and in the breakfast kitchen. They were very attentive with getting us dinner reservations on New Year's Eve and making other accommodations we needed during our stay.

For those people wanting to be in the midst of the hustle and bustle of Old Town, the hotel could not be better situated. You walk right on to one of the busiest commercial streets in Old Salzburg, and everything from the river to Mozart's Geburtshaus and the Grosses Festspeilhaus are literally minutes walk away. Despite the lively surroundings, our room was pleasantly quiet throughout our stay.

That said, there were some major comfort and convenience issues. We were upgraded on arrival to a split level room. It looked totally cute and homely, but it was very unpractical. The king bed upstairs, although quite comfortable, pretty much took up the entire loft area, so moving around or spreading out belongings really was not possible, which was problematic because there was very little storage in the bedroom area. The staircases up to the loft and down to the sitting area were very narrow. There was lots of quaint furniture in the sitting area, but again almost no room to move around. The upholstered chairs were very shaky -- one wrong move and they would topple over. It was nice that there was a TV in both large rooms, and the welcome bottle of wine and holiday cookie were very nice touches. It would have been good, though, to have had an iron as the laundry charges were not cheap, as well as a coffee/tea maker as it was cold outside and we never saw one available in the common areas. Internet came with the room, but it typically was slow.

Our biggest complaints were with the bathroom. The toilet actually is situated in a separate, adjoining room. It is so small that you barely can sit on it and close the door. You certainly cannot stand and move around in the toilet room. The bathroom is a decent size with nice bath products, but the shower is a mess. The temperature vacillates constantly, going from frigid to scalding in the matter of seconds. Considering that many other reviewers have commented on this here and on Hotels dot Com, you would think that the hotel would address the problem. Finally, the entry from the front door also is shared with the area outside the bathroom, the toilet, and the double door closet. You cannot open one door while any other is open, and you cannot stand in that area while one of the doors is open. We also had trouble with the locks (yes two) and the door getting stuck. This was not made any easier by the very large and heavy key chains they use.

Some of these issues could be corrected fairly easily; others might be inherent to the fact this it is an old building that would need significant renovations to make it more user-friendly and thus more worthy of a higher star rating. All of that said, I certainly would recommend people to check it out if you want Old World charm and don't want to pay top Euro to stay at the Sacher, Bristol, or Monchstein.

Room Tip: ask ahead of time how large the rooms are, and ask if the toilet is in a separate room from the bathroom and how large that is

Dear ericsf7,

thanks for your detailed feedback and I am happy that you enjoyed our service and the good feel factor of the hotel. As you stated, the hotel is built in 1407 and also a protected building which makes it very diffult to do major updates. Regarding the warm/cold water problems, we did a lot to solve this which we thought is done since May 2013. We always had minor temperature changes which we are not able to change.
Our duplex suite is very popular and I am sorry that you were not happy with your upgrade. We have noted this and will not offer you this room, should you come back.
I remain with best regards

This is a lovely old traditional hotel, beautifully maintained in an old world way. If you like your contemporary rooms this is not the place for you. Its just a great unique feel. Floor boards creak uneven walls, but very high quality finish. Location is perfect in old time short walk to Christmas Market (one in Hellbrunn is better worth taxi ride). We deduct it one star just for restaurant its good food, but wine and food pricing is heavy. Meal for 2 with wine you need to budget 250 Euros minimum. Price wasn't the problem. just wasn't an amazing experience or ambience, to well lit and wine list like its sister hotel in lake fuschl has good calculator to ramp up average wines. We ate on a following two nights at St Peters it was better and cheaper (still expensive meal) and if you go during Christmas its got amazing decorations an ambience to match. A good hunt on Tripadvisor will show many restaurants great ratings. we would definitely stay again but definitely dont eat there, avoid breakfast and go to starbucks or local cafe within 2 mins walk. 32 euros each for breakfast is too much. Staff are great and service you get whilst you stay is excellent

We stayed there for two nights 18 and 19 Dec. The hotel is in a very central location, very helpful staff, clean and has lots of character. beautiful antique furniture, lovely breakfast. You have th try the hot chocolate from across the road if you are there ( by game and have the chilli hot chocolate). The hotel organized transfer from and to Vienna and everything was spot on. We did not go for dinner in the hotel restaurant but our friends did and said it was extremely nice. You won't be disappointed. Enjoy as it is very special place and it adds to your trip experience.
