“Fabulous experience”
Reviewed September 24, 2012

We stayed only one night at this wonderful hotel, but had a wonderful experience. The service was impeccable with friendly, accomodating staff. The room was large, comfortable and filled with charm. And there's nothing like stepping out of the hotel onto the main thoroughfare in Salzburg. Absolutely recommend this place.

We had the great opportunity to stay 5 nights at this neat hotel in the heart of Old Town Salzburg, in early September 2012. We were upgraded 2 levels and stayed in room 57 in the 4th floor of the adjoining building. Our windows looked out to the main walk/thoroughfare and we were just steps from the cute shops, restaurants, squares and some of the main sites in Salzburg. We used our starwood points for the 5 nights, and we had arrived from visits at other network properties in Prague and Vienna.
The room was comfortable, with a sitting area (sofa, 2 chairs, coffee table and desk with chair, a king bed (2 twins pushed together) and a galley type bathroom with 2 sinks, a combo shower/tub and the toilet/bidet area with a separating door. This was plenty of room for me and the hubby. We seemed to be in the corner of the property so it was very quiet. We had to take 2 elevators to get to the room and we passed by all sorts of neat stuff in the open areas on the floors (one item was a type of wench to lug stuff up to the 4th floor thru a window in a common area of floor 4). There were deer heads and it's logo and monogram is a deer, embroidered on the towels, used on the stationery, and there were plenty of antlers throughout the property. Really quaint and charming.
The buses all stopped at the back of the hotel, so it was very easy getting around town. We were just a block off the main bridge. Salzburg is like a story-book town with shop people dressed in the alpine wear; women in the long skirts and aprons and men in leiderhosen. We were there in early Sept and the air was turning nippy, so some of the shops were selling the woollen sweaters, leiderhosen, hats and gloves.
My recommendation for anyone and everyone is that if you are in Salzburg, please consider staying at this property. We didn't eat there as there were so many other choices within walking distance. Stay for the charm and the location.

Room Tip: If you are a starwood member, ask for the upgrade. We did not get it in Prague or Vienna, but score...

The hotel gets one into the mood of being in an old world inn in Salzburg. The facilities and the rooms are beautiful and cozy. The staff is friendly and very helpful. I've never been in a room with so many drawers/closet space. Only problem is not really the hotel but probably the other guests at the time we were there. Coming down for breakfast, it felt like I joined the rest of the members of a tour group from a parish somewhere in the United States. This may sound trivial but it did ruin the atmosphere for me. Solution then is to just go out for breakfast!

Beautiful hotel located in the heart of Altstadt (Old Town) Salzburg. When we drove in and approached the reception desk we were helped by Manuel (not sure of spelling.) He and all the others at the desk, and all the other staff we encountered, were not only helpful, but they ALWAYS greeted us with a smile.

The room was clean and furnished with pieces of furniture that fit in with the antique atmosphere of the hotel and the area. Everything about the room and its furnishings, however were top-shelf - nothing shabby!

The location was also terrific, a short easy walk to the main plaza of Altstadt, and to the other side of the river to other where many other historic sites can be enjoyed.

The only negative was the breakfast. While the staff in the breakfast room were very attentive and helpful, the breakfast itself was lacking. On our trip we visited Innsbruck, Hallstatt, and we are in Vienna now, and we have found the breakfasts in the hotels in these other places offered much more of a selection of cereal, food and fresh pastries.

Dear valued Guest,

thank you for your lovely words on TripAdvisor!

We are glad to hear you enjoyed your stay and appreciate our friendliness and traditional Austrian furnishing, as well as the ideal location of the Hotel Goldener Hirsch! We are sorry to hear, however, that our breakfast did not meet your expectations. Especially our freshly homemade pastries are very popular with our guests. We will be sure to pass on your comments and work to improve this for your next visit.

We hope to welcome you back to Salzburg again soon!

Everything here is perfect! The hotel is very unique with lots of antigue and great design given the fact that it used to be a stable and now turn into a very cute place with a theme. The location can't be beat, right in the heart of old town and walkable to the opposite site of the river and the Mirabell Garden, etc. All of the staff are very friendly and nice and we feel like they are very happy working here. My special compliment goes to Werfen who went out of his way to make us happy although he didn't have to but he was just happy to service customers. This is my second time in this hotel and I have no regret.

Room Tip: Any room is good here, just stay here to experience it.

I had heard that the GH was "the" place to stay in Salzburg -- and when we walked in and were shown our room, we were a bit dazzled. Definitely different from what we were used to, but also a preservation (in a good way) of what was once and still is classic Salzburg. Loved the winding nature of finding you way to your room, and what we imagine are certainly not cookie cutter rooms. Quite charming feel to the common areas and the guest rooms.
Yet, we left with a couple of question marks --
1. Why is the queen size bed, really two twin beds joined together? Cannot understand why hotels still do this. A bit uncomfortable for couples.
2. The breakfast room is a bit small and seemingly tight. Doesn't feel luxurious from what you would expect. Seemed like a way station for what seemed like tour group guests, anxious to meet their bus for the day of sightseeing ahead.

Dear valued Guest,

thank you very much for taking the time to comment on TripAdvisor!

We are happy to hear you were able to capture the charm of the Hotel Goldener Hirsch during your stay in Salzburg. As you pointed out correctly, we are proud to have perserved the classical and authentic Austrian style of our Hotel, as well as the individually decorated and furnished rooms.

As not all of our rooms are equipped with king-sized beds, we are unfortunately not always able to provide a room with a king-sized bed. However, if you indicate your preference in your next reservation, we would of course be happy to do our best in accomodating your wish for a king-sized matress.

We very much hope to welcome you back to Salzburg and to the Hotel Goldener Hirsch in the future!

Best regards,
Wolfgang Putz

This is a lovely old historic hotel that has been nicely updated inside without destroying the historic feel. Each room is quite distinctive and decorated in keeping with an historic building (e.g. large wooden closets), the bathrooms nice and big, and the beds are very comfotable. The location is perfect for walking to all the major Salzburg sites -- the front door lets out onto the pedestrian only shopping street. It is also right near the large "under the mountain" parking garage, where you can self park rather than valet (of note - to valet park you must drive up to the back of the hotel due to the pedestrian only zone; self parking is a bit cheaper). As others have commented, the restaurants on site are expensive...I ate with family at both the restaurants and found the portions and food to be excellent. Similar for breakfast -- there is a large buffet or the option to order food but it was about 26 euro/person. That being said, the service was fantastic and the one day there was a slight delay in our order, the waiter had the cost of the entire meal waived, even though none of us complained. Similarly, all the other staff we met were friendly, fluent in many languages including English, and very helpful. Due to the hotels great location, if cost is an issue there are lots of nice eating establishments nearby (including some more expensive ones). If I were to return to Salzburg on vacation I would definately stay here again because of the wonderful hotel/staff, and the location which can't be beat. Driving within Salzburg can be a nightmare due to all the one way and twisting/turning streets. Staying at the Goldener lets you park the car and then easily commute on foot to all the major attractions.

Room Tip: Rooms on the higher floors are quieter. If you have mobility issues, please ensure in advance that...
