Trip Advisor does not have the restaurant in this hotel listed as an option for reviewing, but they should because it is one of the best ones in town. That said, it is also one of the most expensive in town, but the service, ambiance, and quality of the food is outstanding.
We dropped in a little before the kitchen closed without a reservation, but were promptly seated and treated with the most professional and friendly service that I have ever experienced in a European restaurant. Our meal lasted over an hour past the closing time and we were the last people to leave, but at no point did we ever feel that the waiters were rushing us or in a hurry to leave. This was truly white-glove service.
And then there was the food, which was truly excellent. This restaurant specializes in nouvelle variations on classic Austrian dishes. I started with the German pancake soup while Herr Kramer had the yellow chanterelle mushrooms on scrambled egg with potatoes that were a fluffy as a cloud. He followed with a roast duck that he still maintains is the best he's ever had and that is saying something given his passion for duck. I had the angler fish poached in saffron and accompanied with a crayfish risotto. It all was awesome.
My only disappointment was the grape strudel which didn't feel as satisfying as a regular apple strudel and I hate to waste calories on a dessert that doesn't thrill me. However, the waiter recommended a non-alcoholic beer for me to try that again tilted my favor back in their direction. I have never liked non-alcoholic beers as they taste like sweet malt drinks (at least they do in the states). The Clausthaler that I was served was an eye-opening surprise that I relished. So much so that I now make sure that my distributor keeps a case in stock for me.
A really great meal in a lovely setting while being treated like royalty made this experience truly worth writing about. The restaurant is located inside the hotel at at Getreidegasse 37 and well worth checking out if you're not on a budget.
