“THE definitive Salzburg experience.”

Fraulein Maria's Bicycle Tours

Salzburgers and Austrians don't really get our American obsession with SOM, but they are more than happy to accommodate it. The 3.5 - 4 hrs we spent on this tour was a great mix of local history, culture, and, of course, SOM sights and trivia. Our guide, Claudio, was charming, helpful and willing to take every silly picture requested. Fantastic way to see the city. In case you're worried about the physical aspect of the tour, don't be. There's only one big hill and most people on our tour walked their bikes.

What a great way to see the city, but being a Sound of Music fan, what a wonderful experience to hear the stories about the real family and the difference from the Hollywood film. The bikes were good and helmets readily available. The guide to several fun pics of us and made it so much fun. I loved the 'inside' stories of the actual filming of the movie and it was just a blast recognizing the various areas of the city that were set in the film

I like to give positive reviews, so let me start with the positives. When we took our bike tour, the day was wonderful, sunny and pleasant. Our tour guide was charming, an American girl named Dana who was an aspiring opera singer. She brought “The Sound of Music” to life, singing some of the songs from the delightful musical as we toured the town.

Now for the cautions:

First, do not be misled by having a reservation. We had made a reservation for our bike tour about a month in advance and everything seemed in order. We were told to meet the group at 9:30 in the morning, but we arrived 5 minutes late, only to be told that there were no bikes available. The lesson is that a reservation means nothing. Even with a reservation, it is first come, first served. Fortunately for us, they were able to find two bikes, but there was a downside. The bikes were derelicts. My bicycle seat would not stay up, which made for “interesting” biking, and my lady friend’s gears would not work. Fortunately, the ride was not very hilly, so she was able to cope.

Second, be sure to stick closely to your guide to avoid being left behind. After about an hour of biking and sightseeing, we stopped near the church graveyard which was the inspiration for the final scene of “The Sound of Music.” Dana called for a 15-20 minute break to allow our group of 17 bikers to wander around (and to take a toilet break). We returned to the meeting place after 15 minutes only to find that the group had left us. Dana had not told us where the group would be heading for, so we had no idea where we could go in order to resume contact with our tour group. Fortunately, as I had visited Salzburg before, we were able to find our way back to the meeting point, where we left our bikes. More disappointingly, no one from Fraulein Maria’s tour organization saw fit to contact me afterwards (and they had my email address).

So, to my fellow Trip Advisor members, this biking tour is a great idea but be careful.

Dear Brian,

as i wrote your wife already in a personal mail, i am very sorry that the tour was so unlucky for you both. We will advise our costumers with reservations in future that they should be here 15min before the starting time to get sure that they have their bikes. If they are without notice not here then by 9.30am i keep it like now that the "Show ups" do get the bikes. (95 % of the days we have enough bikes there anyway).
Dana, who is a brilliant guide as you can see in other Reviews, apologies very much as well and if you ever come back to Salzburg please give us the Chance to make it a better expirience for you.

Kind regards

Rupert Riedl

Bike tour was about 3.5 hours long, plenty of breaks for pictures and snacks. Our 3 year old rode in the baby seat and our 10 year old was on his own bike, both managed the ride just fine. (It was our 10 year old's favorite day, he liked it better than the fortress!) Our guide was friendly and funny. The views of the city were amazing. DO THIS TRIP, you won't regret it!
