“Conveniently located to the train station”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 29, 2011

On our recent trip to Salzburg, my boyfriend and I chose this hotel because it was conveniently located within walking distance to the train station (we were only staying in Salzburg for 2 days). The Alderhof is definitely within 5-10min walk from the station, which was nice. However, the surrounding location wasn't very appealing. Similar to previous reviews, the area seemed run down and dirty. It is about a 15min walk to Mirabell Gardens and another 5min to Old Town. The hotel itself was OK - comfortable rooms. They were a little odd, with the toilet in one room and the shower/sink in another. In the end, it suited our needs fine.

I only stayed one night in Salzburg but I enjoyed this hotel. It was very close to the train station, but it was about a 15 minute walk to get to the Old Town. The neighbourhood looked a little seedy but I felt perfectly safe walking around at dusk. The room was cosy and had a television which allowed me to watch CNN in English.

This hotel is in an area of town not suitable for families, there are sex shops and adult clubs very nearby. The hotel is run by a family, but who is managing is difficult to determine as there are always different people on reception, in 3 nights there must have been 5 different receptionists, some of whom were nice. Breakfast is mean, cheap tinned fruit, appalling coffee, bread rolls are ok and the meat is average, there is a 2 slice cheap toaster, for toasting the cheap White sliced. The room was a good size, but seriously overlooked by nearby houses, it was possible for neighbours to look directly into the room, the bathroom is huge but very dated with cracked brown tiles, the towels are too little, there is no air con which made August stifling and no fridge. There is free wifi in the rooms. The Salzburg Card was great but don't be tempted by the package, the cards are available all over town, we also borrowed bikes, which were great, in good repair and ideal for using on the city cycle routes.

Room Tip: Go somewhere else

Booked a 4 day stay for my husband and I -

When we booked in the man that was at the desk was quite polite (only ever saw him this time) but after we had been pointed in the direction of our room we were disappointed to find a tiny room to the front of the property (the traffic noise wasn't a problem) the room had no tea making facility no fridge or cooler the television was out of the arch with no buttons on it you had to stick you fingers in the holes to try and find a channel as the remote did not work the tiny shower room was encrusted with mould and glass looked like it have never been cleaned
The first day we were there we came down for breakfast which was poor we returned to our room to relax and get ready to go out - when the maid walked straight in just as well we were dressed !!! This was the first and only time the maid came anywhere near the room in the whole of our stay the towels are not large enought to wrap your hair in -
Our first night in the room was hurrendous the temperature was unbearable (it was not hot weather at the time) both my husband and i looked for a source of this stiffling heat but could not find it the radiators were cold the heat gave us a hazy head and heavy chest when we asked at reception we were told this is Austrian weather - I have worked in Austria throught a Summer and can safely say for summer weather in Austria it was COLD the man then gave us a contraption which to begin with we thought was a fan but no it was a heater when a fan was provided for the room it was encrusted in dust !!! - as we have no facilities in the room we went to a local guest house for refreshments we were told we could return to the hotel at anytime however when we returned at 11pm we were greeted by an extremely grumpy man who opened the door after 15 minutes of ringing the bell (he only opened the door in the end because we were banging on the door) he was extremely rude and told us we should have rung the bell they have 3 bells to the front of the property that we had been ringing for 15 minutes highly annoying comment - the room keys are on a huge weighted keyring so to carry them round you would have needed a rucksack - the breakfast room was not sufficent to accomadate all guests and found ourselves having to walk back and forth through the reception to find a seat to eat - the staff were not rude but ignorant - When we went to leave this awful place we found that we had been charged more than anyone else and when my husband asked why he was told that they had different rooms well if this was the expensive room then god only knows how bad the others were - I would advise anyone who wants a relaxing uninterupted break to go to the tourist office at the station and book accomadation there £80 per night for this place is a joke ! Don't waste your time or your money and if you have children and you go here make sure you don't walk on the left side of the street as there is an extremely large and obvious sex parlour - I would like to say that there was something good about this place but I can't think of any - I have stayed at much nicer and more comfortable and cordial guest houses in Salzburg for half this money - ALL IN ALL THIS WAS A REAL SHAME BECAUSE SALZBURG IS A BEAUTIFUL PLACE

We stayed for 3 nights in a double and quad-room. The location is ideal, walking distance from the train station, a convenience store called Billa and an Indian restaurant! It is a 7 minute walk to the main bus station (next to train station) which is the mode of transport in Salzburg. The rooms were clean and spacious; there is a lift. The hotel is run by a family and they are quite helpful and friendly. The breakfast is very good and best part are the various murals on the walls of breakfast room which are based on different monuments in Salzburg. On last day we discovered that the river runs behind the hotel which is a 10 minute walk and a quiet scenic area to spend some time. Wifi worked fine and there are no passwords! Rooms in front are a bit noisy due to the street but it is not the fault of the Hotel!

Room Tip: take rooms at back as front rooms are noisy due to the street.

My wife and I chose this hotel based on reasonable rates and proximity to the Old City. But we were pleasantly surprised by the outstanding service that host Mark and his family, all of whom speak fluent English, provided. Upon arrival he made reservations for dinner and for a Mozart concert at the Salzburg castle. He also found a Sunday Mozart service at one of Salzburg's magnificant cathedrals (that was not advertised on the web). The staff made coffee available before breakfast hours for a very early departure and when we left our plug adapter behind, Mark mailed it to us at no charge. We highly recommend a stay here.
