“Lovely - we really enjoyed it.”

Obertauern is a funcational ski-resort - there is no centre and it is really a location divided by a busy road. This hotel was just off the busy road and looks ok from the outside, but northing special. We were concerned - but inside it is something very different.
The hotel is beautiful, with excellent service.
Our room was good - it overlooked the road but there was no noise due to good double-glazing.
The indoor swimming pool and spa area were fantastic - really high quality.
The food was outstanding - we spent a week in Austria, with one night here, and it was the best meal we had - really high quality in a lovely setting.
The service everywhere was also very good - friendly and helpful.
We would certainly recommend this hotel.

This experience was really great. The service is fantastic and pele are very friendly, always ready to help out. There is nothing negative that I could say about Steiner Hotel. Stayed there in the winter and recently in July, both experiences have been one of the best in Austria. I suggest to visit Oubertauern in the summer as well and Steiner hotel offers affordable, all inclusive (breakfast, lunch, dinner) packages.. There are lots of hikings trails and one could have a great relaxing weekend for not a lot of money.
The food is high quality and very tasty wi variety of options.
We will definitely be back.

We have just returned from a wonderful great value short break on a "Firn and Fun" package to this lovely hotel, situated perfectly across the road from the slopes. The overall experience was a great from booking to departure. When I booked our break via telephone about a month ago I asked about the different room options and the lady at reception kindly explained all options in detail to me and offered us a Panorama Suite for the price of a superior double room which we gratefully accepted. The Suite was lovely and newly decorated with a seating area, separate bedroom area and a superb walk-in shower, double sink and separate WC. It was on the top floor, south facing and overlooking the ski piste. These rooms do face the road but at night it was very quiet even though we sleep with the windows open.
The hotel has a beautiful wellness area with a pool and a variety of Sauna options (textile and non-textile), steam room and Tepidarium and the nude are is out of bounds for children under 15 yrs which we much appreciated as we were travelling without children on this occasion.
Our package included a massage each and this was completed by the wonderful therapist Maria. Thank you very much for the wonderfully relaxing treatment!
The hotel seemed very family friendly with lots of options for children and a great looking youth lounge.
The ski cellar, as mentioned before, is the best I have ever seen in my 30 years of skiing and the individual lockers are ideal to store all your gear from skis, boots, helmets and gloves 6* for this.
Food was varied , of great quality and presented beautifully. At breakfast there was a great selection of fresh juices rather than the concentrated variety and cooked to order eggs, omelettes and bacon(speck) as well as smoked salmon and the usual fare. There was always a fair spread from lunch through to late afternoons with salads, hot foods and cakes which was a nice treat after returning from the slopes. Dinner is 5 courses, beautifully presented and very tasty, with either fish/meat or vegetarian options and a salad buffet and huge cheeese selection. The only minor niggle I had was the daily repeated "Antipasti" selection which always consisted of the same. A bit more variation would be lovely but this did not diminish our enjoyment of dinner.
All in all a wonderful experience if there wasn't the awfully smoky bar area right by the entrance to the restaurant, hence just a rating of 4 TA stars. Why? Like many posters have mentioned before this really is not pleasant as a non-smoker and even more so in a family orientated hotel. It certainly deterred us from spending a great deal of time in the bar at night, a real shame and I hope this will be taken into consideration for the next season.
Would I recommend this hotel? Yes definitely!
We hope to return next year for another "Firn and Fun package" but do hope the smoking situation will have been rectified .

This hotel is located across the road from a piste so it to all intents and purposes ski in/out, which is always a huge luxury. The hotel is very clean, and the restaurant staff were fantastic. The dining room is beautifully presented, and the food was fabulous too. A 5 course dinner with options to please most palates, and local specialities to try.

Our room was pleasant although a little dated, and the view was of a roof/wall, but it was only a basic room so it did not claim to offer more. The bathroom was small, but fine for a short stay. There are not tea/coffee making facilities in most austrian rooms, so we should have brought a travel kettle for our very british needs, but there is a samovar in the spa during the day.

The spa was sadly quite noisy as there were lots of children holidaying too, but I believe they do offer adult only periods too- we were at apres ski though!

Obertauern is a great resort for groups, as its very compact and easy to navigate- one is unlikely to miss a last lift and end up in the wrong place- but it's not as beautiful as some other alpine resorts.

Just returned from a super ski holiday. This is a truly wonderful hotel with attention to detail, from arrival through to departure. All the staff were attentive & courteous throughout our stay.

In the restaurant, the food was amazing and to be perfectly honest there was too much of it. Especially having the 5 course evening meal combined with all the buffet options of salads, various other main dishes and cheese selections available. Some of the wine selections can be a bit pricey, so the house wines are a very good alternative. For breakfast, there was everything you could ask for, together with a chef cooking various extra's on request. If you decide to come back to the hotel for lunch, then they do allow salopettes in the dining area & in the evening it's not too formal. The one nice touch is that a member of the family quite often greets you in the evening & they have their own family table as you enter the restaurant.

The public areas in the hotel were all finished to a very high standard with lounges all over the hotel. The swimming pool and spa area is immaculate with a multitude of differing rooms in the spa section. We loved the blue grotto room. There's also a fitness room with many exercisie machines, etc.

The bedrooms are lovely & quiet with good furnishings and bathrobes/slippers are complimentary. Towels are in abundance for both the bathroom & taking down to the pool.

For skiers, the boot room is super, with massive individual "pad-lockable" lockers for each room in the hotel. The boot racks are heated along with underfloor heating & I'm convinced the seats were heated. Then it's just a short walk (30m) across the road to the ski track onto the number 1 piste & a gentle ski down to a gondola or 2 main lifts. (Best to avoid 10am when all the ski schools set out). Sometimes when you return, you may have to use the T-bar to bring you back up to the hotel at the end of the day & there's also the nearby "Qu-bar" for some apres-ski drinking.

Mautendorf is now included in the lift pass & its worth taking the free resort bus from the number 3 bridge for a change of location for one day during your stay.

The only issue I have with the hotel is that they allow smoking in the seated bar area. But there are several comfortable lounges where you can take your drinks, so not a major problem.

Already booked for next years ski holiday - can't wait for another truly wonderful experience.

Room Tip: South facing rooms have better views, looking out at the mountains rather than the hotels at the bac...

We stayed here from 16-23rd March 2013 and had a lovely time, We had booked a Junior suite with a bath and the initial room had a shower, but the management moved us after the first night with no fuss. The Junior suite was south facing and had excellent facilities. The bathroom was a little small but adequate for two people as long as you took it in turns.
Great food, six courses every night and lovely food throughout the day and at breakfast. The ski room is the most comfortable I've seen and the spa/leisure/fitness/wellness areas are very nice and something to look forward to after a days skiing. As non smokers the only downside is the smoking in the bar area which occupies a central position adjacent to the central stairwell and makes it difficult to get a drink after dinner without being gassed by the fumes. The ajacent lounge area could do with a waiter on hand as there only seemed to be one barman and he was fully occupied with the smokers. One night a crowd of Germans came in at 04:00 and woke us up, but they left the next day so no big deal, we would have had to complain otherwise, but it was a "one off". Otherwise EXCELLENT

Room Tip: Junior Suite or Himmelbett are best - Rms 133, 233, 333, the best value

Just back from our second holiday at the Steiner. It's still excellent, the food still delicious and interesting, and having an included lunch is a great option. We had the lunch three times in the hotel and the selection was just right , but we do like to eat up in the mountain as this is not something you can do at home.
We had white out days this year so were grateful for the well appointed pool area and the lovely reading room.
It's a huge shame that the smoking is still a major problem for most guests. Everyone we spoke to from a variety of countries all started with saying what a lovely hotel it is but how much they hate the smell of smoke everywhere. It really is horrid and all your clothes smell which means you can still smell smoke in the bedroom. Sadly it is a hot topic with the guests and really must be sorted as it stops a lot of people enjoying a drink before or after dinner.
I have still given 5 stars as all the hotels in Austria have the same problem and other people we met on the slopes were moaning about the same thing in their hotels.

Come on Steiner be the first to ban smoking you'll be loved for it!!!

We'll be back next year and really hope to enjoy a nice clean drink in the bar.

Room Tip: Face the slopes!
