“Superior rooms are large and newly decorated; excellent breakfast.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 8, 2011

We stayed in a superior room on the top floor. I did not see the regular rooms, so I do not know if they are equally nice. The superior rooms are large and well-laid out. They are newly decorated and extremely comfortable, but they are not air-conditioned, and because they are on the top floor, they can get hot.

The staff was thoughtful and extremely responsive, and the breakfast buffet was more interesting and more diverse than most.

Many people and groups biking on the Drau Bike Path use this hotel as a base--you can bike to the Slovenian border from here (downhill) or use the Mosser, as we did, as the endpoint of a bike trip from Brunneck or Toblach or Lienz in the Tirol.

Internet service was excellent, but not free. We paid 5Euros per day for unlimited service.

This is my second stay the Hotel Mosser. Another reviewer stated it wasn't a 4-star hotel, which is true in some aspects, but not others. There are some aspects where this hotel shines, and others where it does not. I'll start with the summary and if you are still interested, you can read my detailed comments further down.

Summary
I would recommend this hotel as somewhere to "put your head down" in a comfortable bed in clean surroundings (with the caveat that you should be aware of the heat/noise trade-off - see "Negative -> Comfort" below). If you are looking for the full 4-star experience (gym, pool, restaurant, room-service etc) I would suggest paying a little more and looking elsewhere. If you are from the UK and reading this review, think of this hotel as a Travel Lodge, only FAR cleaner, and you won't be far off the mark.

Positives:
Cleanliness - This is where I feel the hotel shines (forgive the pun). The communal areas and rooms are kept pretty much spotless. The bathroom is one of the areas that impressed me most since I've stayed in some "5 star" hotels where there have been signs of mildew in the shower/bath area and you can see that things have been given a "quick wipe over" - not here! When using my electric toothbrush, I occasionally flick barely perceptible drops of toothpaste onto the mirror and every day after the maid has been, the mirror is spotless again, along with everything else in the bathroom.

Comfort - The bed is one of the most comfortable of any I have slept in. This is of course a subjective point. I would describe the mattress as "medium firm" with no lumpiness and the pillows are very soft and fluffy (which I can imagine is not to everyone's taste). The bedclothes themselves are soft and comfortable against the skin. Only a light duvet is provided, but this is not really a problem (see negative comments below)!

Quietness - The positive aspect here is that I have not heard guests in other rooms. On my last stay, I could hear the television in the adjoining room, but I assume they had the volume up quite high (when you first turn on the television, the volume is quite high). It was not loud enough to annoy me and this only occured once (but I could just have been lucky that I wasn't staying next to a TV addict?)

Breakfast - The breakfast buffet is quite extensive and, as is usual for hotels, is mostly composed of bread/cereal/fruit. Also, with this being Austria, you get a choice of meats and cheeses. They also have hard-boiled eggs. The breakfast room is light and airy.

Price - For a hotel in the heart of Villach, the price per-night is quite competitive. It's hard to be objective over the pricing as I haven't dared to sample the other similarly-priced hotels in Villach due to some of the reviews I've read on TripAdvisor!

Negatives:
Comfort - The room I am staying in (a single room overlooking the street) has no air-conditioning. Fine in the cold Austrian winter, but not the best in the summer. When I was last here, the weather was cold and the room was like a sauna. This was the worst aspect of my stay. I would leave the window open during the evening so that the room could cool right down, then close it right before getting into bed at ~10pm. By around 5am the room would be sweltering again. Now the weather is warmer, I presume the heating has been turned off as the room temperature is more comfortable, but only if the window is kept open permanently. I find this okay, the noise from the street does not affect my sleeping. I can imagine light sleepers or people who are used to living in the countryside would suffer a bit here - choosing between enduring the noise or the heat (both of which are likely to affect your sleep).

Restaurant - Or lack of! There is a cafe serving pizza, baguettes and other light snacks. The decor is dated, but has a certain charm. The biggest problem is that as a non-smoker I can't stand to be in there for any period of time. Smoking is allowed in the cafe and it seems that most (if not all) of the regular patrons are smokers. It's a shame as I would probably use this facility more if it were smoke-free (though the smokers would probably use it less, so it's a "Catch 22" for the hotel).

Towels - The towels in the bathroom really have "had their day"! They are bordering on thread-bare and you only have to look at them from the shower cubicle for them to become saturated! Some nice new fluffy towels would be good!

Internet - Wireless internet is available... For a price! There are various prices depending on how long you want to surf for and you pay in advance. The ones I have paid for so far are:
10 Days = €35
7 Days = €25
1 Day = €15(!!!)
I guess since hotels don't rake in the money from over-priced phonecalls any more, they've turned to the internet to increase their profits...

Television - If you have seen all that Villach has to offer and would like to stay in to watch a little TV, you are in luck - provided you speak German or Italian! There is one English-speaking channel and that is BBC News 24! Not great for "entertainment". There is always the internet...

In addition to the above, I could also mention the lack of room-service, but this is something I almost never use when staying in hotels. It's cheaper to go to the bar/restaurant and drink/eat there, but I can imagine some people would see the lack of room-service as a negative aspect.

Hotel Mosser is a comfortable, family owned place. I have no major comment ccept that it is missadvertised as a 4 star hotel, which is bit disappointing. Mosser does not have a room service, no direct line to call the front desk, no operating front desk at night (if you forget your room key you cannot get in!!!), no restaurant. I think all of theses things are essential for a 4 star hotel, That being said, the hotel is clean and comfortable. Our room was of a good size and there was delicious breakfast served in the morning. Hotel has a small bar with some snacks to kill the hunger. One small complaint would be that we ordered a non-smoking room but we definitely could smell cigarettes inside. Also some rooms were being renovated on our floor and they would start working at 7am, which was really frustrating.
