“very romantic, but the staff was somehow unpleasant”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 13, 2010

We stayed at the Villach for one night ot the way to Venice. The hotel is beautiful, self-service wellness area on the roof was perfect, the weather was very nice too, the dinner was GREAT, rooms beautiful (me and my husband stayed at the Napoleon´s suite, our parents in modern rooms - both options spotless), breakfast amazing. BUT : lady at the reception din not speak very good english, so during the conversation she left some questions unanswered and stayed silent until I asked something else. The staff at the dinner restaurant (we had half-board) did not take any notice of us for at least for 15 min, so we were just sitting there and staring at each other. After that a suspicious waiter approached, probably thinking we are there by mistake and will leave soon. When I have explained to him we are hotel guests with half-board he was thinking for a while and than he started to act "waiteresly". We thought it is because our smart casual clothes (the restaurant is sort of fancy looking), but than group of bikers approached - in sport clothes and they were also hotel guests. I can live with this , but for our parents in their sixties and for the first time abroad these were very sad moments.

My wife and I stayed at this hotel as part of an organized bicycle tour. That being said we were probably in a basic room. But from a "4 Star" hotel we expected better. The room was run down and dingy. The pillows were flatter than pancakes. There is no AC and at night the radiator pinged and gurgled to keep you awake. The provided hotel breakfast was good, but standard fare for this region. There is a very nice sauna on the roof with a nice patio. But you can't sleep the night in a sauna. You may have a better experience if you are in one of the deluxe rooms. But avoid the standard rooms. The reality is this is not the charming hotel you see on the offical website.

We chose this town on route to venice and arrived in the middle of the annual festival which lasts a week. There was a great buzz in the town which added to our enjoyment with a great parade through the town of lots of national costumes and local bands. Villach is a small town but worth stopping at for 2-3 nights as we had a great day trip by train to the Worthersee and also to Klangenfurt. Good hotel with good breakfast and bar food served in pedestrian only street. I would stay here again if i was in Villach. Spectactular train journey here by train from Salzburg with views ot the Carinthian mts.

  • Liked — Building was interesting as was old post house but beautifully maintained.

The hotel certainly lived up to its name and exuded a romantic charm on its guests. It was situated right in the middle of the main pedestrian mall of Villach, convenient to shops and restaurants. The hotel apparently has a 500 years old history and has housed kings and royalties down the ages. Our room was not big, but was comfortable with nice old classical furniture. There was even a mini-bar and telephone in the room. There were 2 doors to our room - one opening inwards and one opening outwards. I suspect it was set up this way to keep out the noise. The buffet breakfast was very good with a hot omelette available should you so choose, and plenty of hot and cold choices. Parking is limited and late guests will have to resort to double parking in the hotel car park. The front desk will ask that you leave your keys with them, in case they have to move your car. Overall, we had a comfortable stay and would not hesitate to recommend the hotel to family and friends.

3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 15, 2008

Date stayed: April 1, 2008

We booked a double room for one night 6 months in advance. We walked from the train station to the hotel which of course would have been easier if I had printed a map prior to the trip. Evidently, mid-week the hotel was not full and our double room was upgraded to "the" suite which was huge. Unfortunately, the wood floors in the suite creaked so badly that we feared being thrown out of the hotel if we walked across the room!! While this was to be expected in a 500 year old hotel, it was excessive to the point of making us ill-at-ease. Our dinner and breakfast at the hotel restaurant were reasonably good.

  • Disliked — The creaky floors!

Dear Sirs!

Thanks a lot for the information about 'creaky floors'. The room you stayed in is an original room, where Emperor Karl V stayed. It is standing under 'Historical Heritage Protection' and we are not allowed to make changes in this room. Next time you re coming - please tell that you prefer modern rooms - we have 65 different styled rooms, so it will be very easy to sleep without ' creak'! We also have double rooms in Laura Ashley-Style, Alpine-rustic, mediterranean - so just ask!

My husband and I have stayed at the Post Hotel about 5-6 times, as he has to travel to Villach for business regularly. He receives a corporate room rate, which I believe is somewhere between 100-120 euros/double room.

This hotel is super, super cute! It's exactly what you would imagine an 'austrian gasthof' should look like. It mixes both austrian style with historical pieces in all areas of the hotel, including the guest rooms.

Being right in the center of town, directly on the pedestrian only road, it's a great location. They do have a car park in the courtyard of the hotel, but can be tricky to find, so ask for great directions.

We have only eaten breakfast at the hotel, and it's delicious- a full breakfast buffet (cereals, meats/cheeses, bread, yogurts, eggs made to order, etc).

The staff is very friendly and the maid service is great. There is also free internet in the rooms (bring your own computer, of course).

Although their website states it, I actually had no idea they had a
'wellness' center on the 3rd floor.

My only critical marks of the hotel would be:
- While the rooms are spotlessly clean, sometimes there is dust on the
chandeliers or the old light fixtures on the wall will look a little worn/torn. But it's an old hotel, so chalk it up to charm! If you are looking for bright, shiny and new, dont stay here and consider the newly opened Holiday Inn.
- During our last stay, we had a room on the 3rd floor. I didnt like the darkness of the hallway or the fact that you had to take the elevator vs. stairs (no access). I much prefer rooms on the 2nd floor (and also think they've also been on average a bit bigger).

Overall, we love staying at the hotel post with it's romantic charm and historic style. And it's a great location that cant be beat for someone wanting to explore Villach.
