Romantik Hotel Post
Ranked #5 of 19 Hotels in Villach

my husband and I chose this so called 4 star hotel in Villach last year for the New Year's Eve. We chose a lovely double room from booking.com. Reality was a bit beyond expectations: rude staff in the reception, noisy location, horrible old and broken furniture (I'll add the pics to prove it) and broken toilet.Evidently, we went to complain and to ask for the room we had booked in fact. After trying to fool us for around 5 minutes the receptionist saw clearly we wont give up so told us on a rude tone that the room we booked was in fact given already so that's it. When I threatened to call the customer protection she remembered suddenly that the next day another room was available. Breakfast was poor and served by some fat smelly ladies on some often broken plates or cups. Cutlery was quite dirty and the parking had insufficient spots.

Very interesting old building centrally located and easy walking to the train station. A little hard to find by car as the building faces onto a large pedestrian square/plaza and there are lots of one-way streets. The room was okay but there was no air conditioning just a fan that we placed in the window. Breakfast was very good! Enjoyed just stepping outside walking through the old downtown in the evening.

"Romantik" means very old and in that sense this hotel excels. The public areas are lovely but when you go up the stairs it's all very "characterful" or as I'd call it "creepy". We were in the Napoleon suite (Napoleon's nephew slept there) and we could see his head's imprint on the pillow. No, that's not fair - the room was spotlessly clean and tidy but very old-fashioned (but with wi-fi - apparently Napoleon insisted on it everywhere he conquered).
The double bed was two singles pushed together (as is common practice in Europe) but they had quite high wooden sides (honeymooners should pack shinguards) and creaked like Pinocchio's grandfather. The floorboards were even worse and a coachload of honeymooners would sound like Captain Sparrow's pirate ship at full pelt in a Force 10. And there was no air-conditioning.
Breakfast was lovely. The hotel is in a pedestrian-only area and is therefore hard to reach with the car park behind the hotel being completely inadequate for the number of guests. You have to leave your car keys at reception so that strangers can move your car to let others out. I didn't mind this with my hire car but if I'd brought the Aston I'd have been very unhappy.

A really old coaching house in the heart of Villach. Modernised throughout to give an olde world charm with a contemporary feel. Free secure parking at the back of the hotel. The rooms were airy and spacious, really comfy beds and pillows. Bathroom had a superb shower. Lovely courtyard to sit in or you can sit at one of the many street cafes and bars just outside the hotel. Staff were warm and inviting and the food served in the hotel restaurant was cooked to perfection. Breakfast was usual continental style but with a large selection of meats, cheese, cereals and breads to shoose from. We would have no hesitation to stay here again. We only stayed one night as it was just a stop over. We had driven from Kaprun across the Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse. Fantastic. 2nd July and it was snowing and we were throwing snow balls! The glacier was just immense and the lovely village of Heiligenblut was well worth a stop to look around. Next stop was Vienna.

The Hotel is in the central square...5min walking to the train station.
It is a bit old, but reasonably maintained. Staff is friendly (rare in Austria) and most are fluent in English. Breakfast is very good and has a very reasonable variety.
Room is OK (it was the Economy room...it has better rooms)...bed was comfortable, included a mini-fridge and had enough space.
BUT...heating is not controllable and was too hot (in May). The bathroom was too small...and oddly divided. And the street was very noisy at night...BETTER rooms may solve this issues (as they may be in the back AND have bigger bathrooms).
Free wifi internet on all rooms...and works OK (fast enough for Skype...but it may break down some times).
Overall it was a nice price (70EUR/night with breakfast)...and a nice hotel...you may find better deals in Villach but not many.

Room Tip: Avoid Economy Room if possible

In Villach for New Year's Eve, this hotel was ideally located right in the quiet pedestrianised centre. The hotel itself was large and beautiful, full of character and details sharing its history. The room was larger than expected, and fully equipped with everything we needed. The only (unfortunate) exception was its lack of hot water. When we queried this with Reception, she was very apologetic but explained only that in a building as old as this, it is difficult to get hot water through the pipes, and we just needed to be patient and let it run. We let the water run for almost a half hour (at their insistence) and the water never reached more than a tepid just-bearable temperature). The room itself was very comfortable, and the awesome breakfast - lots of choice and fresh food - warmed us where the shower may not have. The 'wellness area' was great fun and the sauna a welcome treat at the end of the day.

We stayed at the Villach for one night ot the way to Venice. The hotel is beautiful, self-service wellness area on the roof was perfect, the weather was very nice too, the dinner was GREAT, rooms beautiful (me and my husband stayed at the Napoleon´s suite, our parents in modern rooms - both options spotless), breakfast amazing. BUT : lady at the reception din not speak very good english, so during the conversation she left some questions unanswered and stayed silent until I asked something else. The staff at the dinner restaurant (we had half-board) did not take any notice of us for at least for 15 min, so we were just sitting there and staring at each other. After that a suspicious waiter approached, probably thinking we are there by mistake and will leave soon. When I have explained to him we are hotel guests with half-board he was thinking for a while and than he started to act "waiteresly". We thought it is because our smart casual clothes (the restaurant is sort of fancy looking), but than group of bikers approached - in sport clothes and they were also hotel guests. I can live with this , but for our parents in their sixties and for the first time abroad these were very sad moments.
