Perfect for couples and romantic staying. What a surprise to enter the hotel and ... none is at the reception. Take the lift to the 1st floor and the atmosphere is completely different. A very professional and attentive staff will receive you, in a wide and warm room, with plenty of mirrors, paintings of the emperor, statues, glasses, carpets. A welcome drink will complete this very much appreciated welcome. I was here 2 times, the 1st time I was given a better room than the one I had booked - the cheapest one - but 2nd time the hotel was fully booked, and I could see a slight difference. The window facing the square and the great fountain was extraordinary both at night and in the sunlight. Rooms are not very wide, but very comfortable, with good desk, a nice armchair, mirrors and paintings, everything is very nice. the breakfast is superlative, everything is fresh and tasteful, the wide room is fantastic, with the mirrors and the crystal lights. The underground parking in the square is very well connected with the elevator to the hotel, don't use the credit card, take the ticket and ask for the reduced tariff for the night.

Reception area was very hot and stuffy. Decor interesting and a bit unusual but that didn't bother us and we will remember it long after mainstream hotels we have stayed in. Seemed like we were the only guests there, as never saw anyone else but breakfast was very good and rooms clean and comfortable. Central. Parking fine.

We stayed here May 2013.
The Palais Portia is, as I understand, a palace dating back to the 17th century. The hotel has been rebuilt using the original facade. I rate this as a 4 star hotel.
Reception is on the first floor which can be accessed by lift.
We arrived at the hotel about 2pm. There was no one at reception so we rang the bell and waited. The lady on duty turned up 5 or 10 minutes later. We could hear her working nearby but apparently she did not hear the bell. I believe her. Incidently, we got a warm welcome.
The rooms are beautiful and fitted out in 17 - 18 century style with oil paintings on the walls.
Our room, which faced onto Neuer Platz, was actually 2 rooms being a bedroom and lounge. The bathroom (large) is off the entrance way into the lounge. There are chandeliers in both bedroom and lounge. The bed was firm and gave a good sleep. Room has a mini bar.
With the windows open there is a little bit of noise but it wasn't too bad.
Buffet breakfast was very good.
For evening meals, there are cafes bordering Neuer Platz.
We are unlikely to travel through Klagenfurt again but would happily stay here if we did.

This place was great. I felt like an emporer staying there. The place is like a museum with beautiful old paintings and statues all around the place, the breakfast was great and the hotel has a really central location.

I stayed here for two nights and the staff was so nice... the breakfast was great, with fresh fruits and lots of options, the bed very nice and also the rooms. AC was working good. The bedroom had a nice view of the dragon, just in front of it, the square gets very noisy, but when you close the windows its totally quiet.
I forgot to ask for ironing service, but the staff solve it and they did it at 21:00 pm on sunday in less than 20 minutes. The ladies were amazing. It was a very happy experience and very cheap as well.

Room Tip: Ask for a bedroom in front of the square, you will enjoy it. I had a great time looking through the...

When I booked a business room (for 2 nights, ie 27/5/13 - 28/5/13) at the hotel through its web site, all seemed OK, especially when I read some opinions at the Trip Advisor site.
Upon arrival we were given a room (no. 69` 4th floor). The air condition was extremely low and could not have chilled the room. Since the room had a window, we opened it to enable some fresh air, however the window was facing, in fact surrounded by 6-8 other windows, so it was impossible to have privacy and fresh air together. We had to choose and decided that privacy is more important … we approached the reception asking their assistance in checking the air condition. They admitted that it was problematic and offered another room, bigger, in which the AC was just fine. Few hours thereafter, when I approached the reception in another matter I was told that since the room we were given is larger – we will have to pay some 100 € on top of the agreed tariff. We did not agree to that and asked to leave the hotel immediately. After discussions between the reception and the management, we were told that we can either leave immediately and pay 125 euros or leave the next day and pay 125 € but with NO breakfast. So we were punished (no breakfast) due to a problem of the hotel (extremely weak AC). The next morning we of course left the hotel.
It should be also noted that the hotel gives you 12 hours of parking in a close underground park (19:00 – 07:00). Yet, each additional hour there costs about 3 €. The hotel then offers you to buy a ticket for 24 hours parking (about 10.5 €) or 48 hours (about 20 €). Hence, parking is not really free. Tricky? So it seems.
If despite all this you decide to book this hotel (and I must say that if I came across a critique as this one – I would not book it) do pay attention and give a close and careful look while booking this hotel. As summer is around the corner – I would advise you to make sure in advance that you get a room with a STRONG AC, not a weak one. Do not agree to check-in before feeling the AC in action. Furthermore: avoid rooms 61-70 as you will not be able to open a window. Do note that room 70 is behind the elevator, so this might be a major disturbance.
I must note that another couple that checked in after we did - encountered the same problems. I do not know what was their decision and if they stayed there or left.

Room Tip: not rooms 61 to 70 since they face an internal yard full of windows, so NO privacy` room 70 is annex...

The Hotel Palais Porcia was different. The hotel faces a plaza which is quite lovely but can get very noisy at night. Though there is a counter downstairs in the hotel lobby, we had to take an elevator up a floor to actually check in. Strange. Felt like there was no one there to greet/welcome us. Once we did get upstairs the front desk person was not very helpful. We had to ask about parking and we were given no information about breakfast. She didn't seem very happy that we were giving the hotel our business. The room had 2 separate rooms. One was the bedroom and the other a sitting room with a TV. The bathroom was very large and very opulent. The hotel did give us a coupon for a free cocktail from the hotel bar. Free Wi-Fi was available, easy to log onto and was working. Parking was available in the parking garage across the street and it was easy to get to. We got parking for free but I'm not sure if we were supposed to. When we went downstairs for breakfast, every empty table was dirty though there were 3 people working the breakfast room. We had to sit at a table with dirty dishes. Not good.
