Burgers seem such a basic recipe, why don't that many restaurants get it right?
Well, b.eat has nailed it. Homemade buns, fresh- ground beef, perfectly cooked and seasoned --b.eat would be a hit in any American city, too. Simply fantastic taste. The salads have a good rep as well, though I did not try one.
The restaurant is near the University, the entrance actually around the corner from Harrachgasse, on a main road across from the park at the foot of the Schlossberg, namely Glacisstrasse. It is about a half mile hike, mostly through the park, from Freiheitsplatz in the central part of Graz. A two- mile hike would be well- worth it.
The crowd there is pretty young so there is a good buzz going on, and the night we visited there was a duo singing, and inviting guests to sit in, singing, and/or guitar playing. There was also a DJ setup which I guess is used at other times. The mood was great, and we ended up staying a couple hours longer than we would if just eating. The decor is simple, functional, modern and works well in the space.
The proprietress hails from L.A. but as I heard from my friend, has been in Graz for at least a decade. She came by our table to make sure everything was o.k. and chatted us up a bit -- she clearly knows how to run a good kitchen as well as make guests feel welcome.
If you are hungry for a burger in Graz, you must go. Even if you are not hungry for a burger, b.eat will remind you of what you are missing -- but be warned: you will leave with a much higher standard in mind, and the other burger places will just not measure up any more.
