Owner description: Cafe - Shop - Spectacular Architecture / Graz as "Cultural Capital of Europe 2003" - an impetus to a fresh start. Graz-born Robert Punkenhofer inspired the New York artist Vito Acconci to design an accessible artificial island. The project was realized as a 47m-long reticular steel construction. The curved and twisted shape can be associated with a half-opened shell. In its open part, wave-like blue benches form an amphitheatre for events of all kinds. Under the domed glass roof, a cafe in blue and white offers the opportunity to enjoy being close to Mur - a new feeling even for locals. What is called an island, is a ship in fact. She is held by an anchor and is stabilized additionally by the two footbridges connecting her to the river banks.

During our city walk we visited also the so called Murinsel.
Nice to see this art object but sitting in the restaurant is not cosy.

We walked across this bridge in the day and walked back in the night to see it lit up. There is a cafe, restaurant and shop based on the middle of the bridge. Good photo opportunities. Very unusual

This floating island in the Mur River must have been quite a technical challenge but frankly it seems rather meaningless. I though it was more satisfying to stand up on the street footpath and look down on the structure rather than to ride the elevator down and then step onto this artificial metal island

Along with the Kunsthaus (Contemporary art museum), this sci-fi bridge/restaurant/bar is striking out from Graz classicism.
It's a great, modern pedestrian bridge, with a small amphitheater in the middle of Mur river. There's indoor and outdoor seating, and it was very relaxing to cool down with a cold beer from sightseeing.

You can't help but notice this stunning piece of modern architecture floating in the middle of the Mur river. It resembles a giant sea shell and it's quite cool. You can access the structure from bridges on either side of the river. Once there you can enjoy a drink or something to eat at the pretty cafe, with both indoor and outdoor seating. Coffee, beer, wine and cocktails are all available. Prices are a little on the higher side. Service is friendly and they have some interesting reading material.

There's also a nice area to kick back and relax from a day of sightseeing as well as a small gift shop above the cafe. I picked up an inexpensive print of the art museum as a souvenir. The views from the island are nice and there's no charge to go on it. Be sure to check it out in the evening as well, when it's lit up.

Highly recommended!
