“Quaint and clean”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 31, 2014 via mobile

We stayed here for our first night in Austria May 30/14.
It was a friendly and warm place . The rooms were small and cozy . A little dated , but we expected that .
The breakfast was more than adequate and tasty . Lots to choose from .
The location was tough to find , but our rental car had a mapping device and helped us find it .
It is next to a Grave Yard .
We would recommend this place to the economy travellers .

A lovely hotel on the outskirts of Graz. The hotel is very clean and well-maintained. There is a very good restaurant in the hotel (although the bees were a problem--they had to burn coffee grounds as a deterrent). The hotel is situated next to the Basilica Mariatrost, a lovely Baroque church. We were there on the feast of St. Mary and enjoyed a free concert in the basilica. At the bottom of the hill on which the hotel sits is the tram stop which takes you into downtown Graz and all the center city attractions (the tram only takes exact change so check at the hotel desk beforehand to make sure you have the correct amount). If you have the energy after a day of sightseeing you can climb the 207 steps to Basilica Mariatrost.

We were supposed to arrive to this hotel for one night. Due to the heavy snowfall, our flight was cancelled upon our arrival to the airport and we had to wait till the next morning. We had no any opportunity to inform the hotel regarding the cancelation. The great thing is that we've received a call during the night from the hotel; a lady asked when we are planning to arrive. Although the room was not refundable, the hotel didn't charge for this night at all!!! Unfortunately, we couldn't evaluate the hotel, but their treatment is really worth it. Defenately, we will stay at this hotel in the future. This what a good hotel is.

The first time we stayed at this hotel was in 1985 during our honeymoon. On our way back from Croatia this year, we tried it again, and it did not disappoint. Yes, it is some distance outside the Graz center, but it takes max 15 minutes by car to get back to the main attractions. The hotel and restaurant are both of high quality; and the prices in both are also quite reasonable. We will stop here again.

Regardless of the distance from the main city... this is a beautiful location for a few days out of the busy hustle and bustle of cities! The views are superb, the staff go out of their way to make you feel welcome, the adjacent BASILICA Mariatrost is not to be missed and you should climb the 207 steps and stop periodically and view the panorama. The BREAKFAST buffet has a wonderful selection and dinners are amongst the BEST we have had in the 2 months of travelling through Europe. Hotel was spotless, our room was very comfortable and the bathroom was adequate and very clean! There is some really beautiful old furniture and clocks to be enjoyed too! Most of the staff speak good English.

Room Tip: Use a taxi, if you are unable or dont want to walk up and down the hill to get there. ITs worth it...

The hotel is a 30 min tram ride from the centre of Graz but it is in a very quiet and peaceful location. If you are looking for a quiet relaxing place and don't mind the tram ride it is excellent. If you hate the idea of a 30 min tram ride each way to get to the city choose elsewhere.

It is reached by tram 1 line, which runs near the hauptbahnhof, through the main town and out to the outskirts of Graz to its final stop (Mariatrost). The hotel is located on top of the nearby hill behind the Basilica. The stairs (217 of them) leading up to the basilica and hotel can be just about be seen from the tram stop. We walked up with our bags the first day so it is doable but certainly strenuous. We left fitter than when we arrived. An 11.20 Euro 7-day public transport pass (obtainable from tobacco kiosks and the like) quickly becomes worthwhile if you are staying more than three days.

The hotel was very quiet (neighbours are the basilica and a graveyard). Our non-smoking room showed no residual cigarette smell (even though there was still an ashtray mounted on wall in bathroom). The rooms were large and comfortable. The housekeeping was good and the room was clean. The breakfast, included in our rate, had a good variety and quality. The free wired internet was reliable and relatively fast (they provide a cable if you need one). There was also a wifi signal that worked fine in our room but since they don't mention it I am assuming it doesn't cover whole hotel.

The bathroom was a little tired with the grouting around the bath/shower stained dark but no musty smells. One problem with the bathroom was there was no ventilation in the completely windowless room. This meant smells and moisture lingered for hours. The other problem with the bathroom was the glass screen for the bath/shower was a three panelled folding glass arrangement that you could position along the edge of bath. There was no way to keep this in place and with the position of the shower head being mid-bath it was difficult to shower without flooding the bathroom.

Room Tip: If overlooking a graveyard is likely to worry you ask for a room on the basilica side.
