“Impressive rooms and service”
Reviewed January 12, 2014

Stayed there in Christmas 2013 along with my wife in a junior suite, excellent room size, very clean and well designed… breakfast buffet very rich, excellent value for money, located within walking distance of city centre and shopping area…

We spent a few days in Graz after Christmas, but the spirit of the time was there. The streets were pleasantly full of people, but it was not loud. There are many different sights to see and explore. We walked the town, which is a pleasant walk and we saw many attractions, even the city park was interesting to look at. The churches prepared such nice cribs with baby Jesus and we even found the ice ones though the city warden did not know they existed, and it was just around the corner were he was asked. Lovely cafes and breakfast places, good food for a normal price.

Room Tip: We took an economy roo, which was really that. No additional things in the room, which surprised me...

I stayed in this hotel for three nights while taking part in a conference at the University of Graz in December 2013. The hotel was very good, and the breakfast was excellent. The rooms are clean and quiet, if a bit small. The layout of the hotel is a little strange, and at one point my computerized ceased to work (I got a replacement), but otherwise I found the hotel a top-notch place to stay in either by myself or with my wife.

Reviewed December 7, 2013

I stayed here for six nights at the start of December. I'd be very happy to go back if I was visiting Graz again.

The welcome was warm and efficient. I was a little perturbed when I went to find my room - quite a walk, in an annex where the rooms are marked "Economy". However, my room was comfortable and well-appointed. I suppose it was in some sense trying to be a bit like an Ibis or some such economy hotel - but in fact the level of facilities and finish was really rather higher than that. My room was very over-warm: after I had turned the radiator off for a couple of days, the temperature fell to a level where I could sleep ok.

The breakfast in the hotel offered all you could want, but the set-up was quite chaotic, especially at around 9am on the weekend mornings. There wasn't enough space around the breakfast buffet, with guests going in all directions and staff trying to move through, replenishing supplies and carrying trays. The whole thing made for quite a stressful start to the day.

The hotel offered free wifi. When it worked, it was fine (good enough to watch youtube videos faultlessly) but it did suffer from periods when it wouldn't work at all.

Servicing of the room was fine, but a little erratic (sometimes not reaching my room till late afternoon, but making lots of noise in the corridor at all times).

The lobby and bar offered a number of different kinds of place to sit, and a good atmosphere. The hotel has a couple of restaurant/cafe offerings, though I didn't try them: they seemed busy (indeed, we didn't get a table, on the evening we tried, around 6pm).

The hotel gym, on the top floor, is a disappointment: it has a few cardio machines and nothing else. The treadmill was malfunctioning in a most peculiar way, making it unusable. There is a good sauna and steam room, however, though I couldn't entirely discern how etiquette would determine you should get from one to the other (there was no changing room to speak of). The sauna was excellent, though I struggled to make it get hot, and found no instructions (in German or English).

The location is very good - one block's walk from a major tram stop at the Art Museum, and just a few minutes across the river from the City Hall, with tram stops and shops. My room was nevertheless quiet. The staff were willing, helpful and attentive. Overall, I enjoyed my stay.

Dear doc_M,

thank you very much for taking your valuable time, writing us such a nice review from your impressions from your stay with us. First of all we are very pleased that you liked your stay and that you enjoyed the time here in Graz.

We have made renovations of our new “Economy” rooms and it was absolutely not our intension to look like an Ibis Hotel or something. This category is very favored by our business guests because the rooms are quite low priced and do have all amenities.

We are sorry about that you don’t felt comfortable at the breakfast. We have many guests during the weekends which are not hotel guests so it is possible that it is a little bit crowded. As an alternative we can propose you for the next time to take a generous a la carte breakfast at the “Kaffee Weitzer”.

Our restaurant “Der Steirer” is fully booked nearly every day at midday and evening. So if you would like to take dinner here the next time, please make sure to have a reservation 

We are sorry that the treadmill did not worked– we have already repaired it! When you enter the sauna area the changing room is just at the entrance with the toilets and the lockers. To use the sauna you have just to inform the receptionists. The sauna is automatically turned on from 17.00-22.00h but if you need it earlier – only ask a receptionist 

Hope to see you soon again at Hotel Das Weitzer!

Kind regards from Graz

Stay here, you will not be disappointed. Helpful and friendly staff. Generous sized rooms. Great location. Excellent breakfast. The bar men are like the shopkeeper in Mr Ben. Just stand near the bar and they will magically appear. Their restaurant around the corner is a must but book in advance as it's very popular. If you are a carnivore try the goulash!

The hotel lies very nicely by the river, and yet in the center of town.
The lobby is big but also very crowded with tour groups and many more people...
It looks like the city uses the hotel for official events.

The rooms: I had a Classic room - although I asked for a larger room. But at reception they said they're fully booked. Well, they were.
The Classic rooms are renovated and clean, with a nice, not outrageously amazing design.
The bathroom has a nice walk-in shower.

A BIG minus, and I think that this is unacceptable at a four-star hotel and especially at a hotel which is defines itself as a center-piece of Graz society:
you have to pay(!) for extras like cheap hotel slippers or RENT your bathrobe at an additional fee. Only this would not make me return to this hotel.

'Wellness/ Fitness:
It's new, but very basic workout machines. One small (yet empty) steam sauna and a dry sauna.
They have a roof terrace. But it looks like they put the oldest chair on there they found in the whole hotel. and it's got kind of a cheap grass-like plastic carpet on the floor. The view would be nice from there. But sitting there makes you feel cheap again.

Breakfast:
Again, okay but under the standard of a four-star place that describes itseld as "THE Weitzer".
You have to line up at two coffee machines of rather mediocre quality.
You do get all kinds of bread: bread roll, wholewheat bread, big bread, small bread, sweet bread, salty bread.
But where is the really nice things that make you want to go to breakfast?
Where's the salmon?
Where's special sausages? (they have only one boring kind of ham, salami and very cheap, regular, sliced sausage)
Where's the cheese VARIETIES? (I don't talk about the again cheap gouda for 50 cents per 100grams)
Where is the selections of cereals? They have a very good Bircher Muesli. And Corn Flakes. But that's it.
Where are the extra treats that make the region so interesting by culinary means?

Furthermore: Be aware: Staff get VERY busy and loud tidying up already at five to ten!!! You won't get your scrambled eggs if you like to come at last minute.....

It's an okay place, and for some reasons it's extremely popular with Graz society - but if you want to enjoy and feel REALLY well, this is not the hotel of your choice.

However: there's is a good bistro inside the hotel, that's worthwile visiting: Try their Styrian tapas!!!

Room Tip: Don't get a Standard room. They're VERY old and awful. Classic rooms are okay. But try to g...

Dear Schubert05,

Thank you very much for putting quite a bit of time and effort into your review of your stay here at the Weitzer.
We very much appreciate your comments, the positive and the negative.

To begin with, we are very proud not only about our popularity with international guests but also with our neighbors and Graz in general. It only proves that we do a lot of things right.
One aspect you criticized was that we charge for slippers and bathrobes. Since we are a very busy and buzzing central town hotel we keep a great focus on our pricing, hence
we do not hide charges within our rates and do not charge “everyone” for the amenities of some. In other words if you want some “extras” we charge just a little fee for them.

What we also would like to note is that we do know about our wellness and fitness area and are about to start renovations in January 2014. So please feel free to come and check out the new
wellness area when you visit Graz next.

Furthermore, we are a bit surprised about your comments regarding our breakfast selections. We do get a lot of compliments for our breakfast buffet and are known in town for its quality and variety.
Nevertheless as an alternative we do offer a la carte breakfast in our “Kaffee Weitzer” which we serve all day.

Last but not least, thank you for complimenting us on the a la carte restaurant “Der Steirer”. We are happy about your kind comments regarding the Styrian Tapas. We will gladly pass your comments on to our excellent chefs and service team.

Once again we would like to have you back at the Weitzer and hope to see you soon enjoying your time in Graz.

Kind regards,
