“A place you must visit”

A concentration camp museum that everyone should visit. Shocking and a real eye opener. Pay for the audio guide to bring to life the real horrors of what went on here.

Went with a friend. Its outrageous how beautiful the view is from such a horrible place. Was living in Linz at the time and took a train ride over, pretty easy to get to. Worth the visit... listen to the audio guide and check out the stairs in the back, as well as the memorials. So disturbing, interesting, and unreal to be in a place like that.

“What an eerie place--amazing experience!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 25, 2014

Mauthausen was the last concentration camp to be liberated by the Allies in World War II. We were in Vienna and took the train to Mauthausen. You can get a taxi from the train station to Mauthausen very easily. It was an amazing experience. You are in this idyllic naturally beautiful area of Austria, and then you enter the camp, and you immediately feel this sense of doom. It is so hard to imagine how a person can inflict that type of physical pain and humiliation on another person. Definitely do the audio tour as it gives you lots of info (and available in various languages), but we were disappointed because the number system was not always marked, and so you had to kind of guess where you were in the camp. It was an incredible experience and I would highly recommend it for anyone visiting Austria--especially if you are into history.

“Very moving experience”

Nothing like I've ever experienced. Feels creepy entering the place, especially reading about what evil actually happened. I visited in winter and it was freezing, so it shows how much pain was endured.

“Definitely worth a visit”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 20, 2013

We stopped by Mauthausen whilst on our drive from Salzburg to Vienna (which is a good place for a break as its about half way)....

Having visited both Auschwitz and Dachau previously we pretty knew what to expect, and as always these are sobering experience. We had one person with us that hadn't been to anything like this before and as expected it was a very emotional and eye opening experience for them.

The location is a tad hard to find, but it is signposted and with satnav its pretty easy. Parking is free for 4 hours (which is plenty of time) and the entrance fee itself is very reasonable (2 euros if I remember correctly).

The Memorial appears to be well looked after and new Museum is very informative and the photo galleries very moving (they put faces to the names). theres all the exhibits you would expect (barracks, gas chamber, crematorium) but what we really liked was walking around around the memorial park and seeing the difference each nation had when designing their memorials. Some are very somber and some are celebrations of freedom and life.

Overall Mauthausen is well worth a visit. Some people wont like the experience, some will find educational..... but most importantly its here so we can learn from it to never let this happen again.
