Salt brine is still being extracted from a mine that has been in operation for hundreds of years. There are three slides on the mine tour that were much more fun that I had imagined they would be {I could not imagine insurance companies allowing this type of slide in the United States due to litigiousness of our society}. The electric train that takes you out of the mine was exciting as well.

The tour was far more interesting and entertaining than I expected. Both the history and age of the salt mine is quite impressive. Please note there is quite a climb to the entrance of the salt mine where the tour begins. Wear very comfortable shoes and casual clothes, no dresses. They give you clothes like scrubs to put on for when you go down the slides. There are two wooden slides you go down to travel from level to level. It’s easy and fun! Also, there is a wonderful lookout point where you are able to see down on Hallstatt & the lake. Don’t miss it!

The cable car only takes you so far there’s a bit of a climb after so make sure to wear appropriate shoes. We saw ppl in heels and that looked super painful.

I really liked the slides, it was more fun than I anticipated, and we got a tiny cute salt shaker at the end of the tour .

After all its just a mine! They've really done a great job at making it tourist friendly (good auditoriums inside the mine, slides, AVs, etc.). However, nothing too exciting!

I wish our mine tours were like this in North America. Just enough facts and education combined with the occasional thrill. The wood slides are a blast. Only in Europe would they encourage a bit more danger by posting your photo and max speed to the entire group to hear the awes and sighs. Knowing this ahead of time makes you push it. At the end you get to ride a bench like mine train through a narrow rock cavern. Great ending and awesome views from the top.
