Owner description: Take the panorama funicular railway up the mountain at Hallstatt to discover the mysterious attraction of this mystical area. The path leads to the tunnel mouth and into a unique underground world first dug by hand more than 3000 years ago: many kilometres of tunnels lead deep into the rock interior. Enjoy a day full of fun and information at the Salt Mine Hallstatt for the hole family.

You start your adventure with a tram that takes you up the mountain, where there is a breathtaking landscape.
From there you walk up the mountain and puts appropriate clothing for visiting the salt mine (about 7 degrees celsius). Visit the mine involves hiking, stops for guided attractions, a giant slide (by 2 times), and a trolley / train set to exit the mine.
After many adventures, there is also a restaurant with a wonderful place to regain the energy landscape.
You must see this tour, especially for children.

It was interesting getting dressed to go down into the mine and then experiencing the slides to the bottom ( you can reach some good speeds ) The whole experience was enlightening.

This is a fun attraction, albeit a pricey one, to see in Hallstatt. You'll learn a few things about salt mining from some dated presentations, including videos, a laser show, and even an animatronic character! I find that I have a hard time understanding the English from German tour guides in Austria, and it's no different in this salt mine. But that can be just me. Hands down the highlight is sliding down a couple of banisters as fast as you can. The train ride out of the mine is fun - keep your body arms/hands close to your body.

Don't forget to visit the skywalk for some amazing views over Hallstatt and the lake.

My husband and I stayed in Hallstatt for a few days while backpacking in Aug. As frugal travellers, which is quite hard to be in this little village, we thought the salt mine was worth our Euros.

Some things to expect:

Lots of cardio! You have to get to the top of the mountain to get in the mine. Even after you take the lift, expect some slightly steep paths.

There is a beautiful look out near the mine entrance.

You get to don some offical mining clothes over your own so you don't get salt and muck all over them.

You get to go down a few slides to reach the lower levels of the mine. Listen to your guide and try to get some serious speed. The last slide clocks in you how fast you reached!

They give you cute little salt shakers at the end.

The tour was great for us (my husband and I are both in out late 20's). Just be patient. If your group ends up like ours, you'll have quite a few tourists. Many were in our group that did not speak any German and had minimal English. This meant that they would not shut up when our guide was speaking and they would all swarm to the next section of the trip. It didn't take long to get annoying.

Most of the mine is a walking tour. You'll go down 2 or 3 slides and then ride mine carts on the way out. Very cool.

I really wasn't expecting much from this, but it was great! They do a great job on this tour. We had a guide who spoke German and English, which was really nice. The tour was really well done and there are some neat souvenirs available too! A must do in Hallstatt!
