It is difficult to decide whether i liked this hotel or not. On the plus side the view is incredible (room 5 has the best view). The room itself is large and the bathroom clean. The hotel owners are friendly and very helpful. But the room was very noisy. We heard everything that was going on in the neighbouring room. We stayed for 3 nights and for 2 of these the room next door was occupied. On these nights you could hear people walking around, talking, even the boiling of the kettle and shall we say some more personal activities!!! The view (which has to be the best view in the world from a hotel room) more that makes up for this but i found it quite annoying to say the least.

Travelling alone, I found this place to be rather unfriendly and unwelcoming. I found it really hard to get there (bus/train/ferry) and not worth the trip. Perhaps the owner was affected by the unseasonally cold weather too as II found Mr hallberg to be really unfriendly and keen to have me outside for the day. (I had booked two nights) As there was nowhere warm and inviting to sit and drink a hot drink to warm up. this place could do with an open fire! Mrs Hallberg was really polite and friendly.
The room was clean and lovely, and we were given the chance to take any unfinihshed breakfast with us for the day, which was very kind, and an idea other Inns in Europe should emulate, rather than wasting it. Also Mrs Hallberg gave us some salt from Hallberg with a nice story behind it.
As it was very cold and snowy, I was talked into going up to the saltmine, as there was little else to do in Hallberg on that day. Don't go, waste of money. When you think of hard labour and prisoners being sent to saltmines in times past, people were not sent there because it was tough and awful work. but due to the boring and claustorphobic conditions! That is how I felt anyway!

I was there with my family for 4 days during xmas of 2007. We had a room with the most amazing view, very heavenly. The owner is super friendly and offered us a lot tips of where to visit and where to eat. Our 4 days there was not boring at all. It's sad they are no longer offering breakfast starting in 2008, but the place itself is still amazing. The owner told us they are trying to selling the place, because they are getting too old to take care of it. so, get a chance to live there while it's still available.

We travelled to hallstatt after seeing a picture in a magazine. We travelled through Austria and jumped on the train to Halstatt and made the short ferry journey to the town without having any hotel booked. We had a wander round the town and found this guesthouse. We were welcomed by the owner who showed us to the top apartment which he called the honeymoon suite. It was so lovely we thought it would be too expensive so we jumped around like loons when he told us the price, it was the cheapest place we stayed in Austria, bearing in mind we went in offpeak season. The views from the windows were more like pictures on the wall, never seen anything so picturesque.
A word of warning if you are going at a quiet time, there was only one bistro open when we were there but luckily we had been to the supermarket and stocked up so we stayed in our room looking at the view and drinking wine, there is very little open at night out of season.

From the moment we arrived in Hallstatt we knew we'd found an amazing place. Add to the stunning natural surroundings the cosy comfort and excellent hospitality of the Pension Hallberg and you've got a match made in heaven. The hosts were very kind and helped us with hiking and walking maps as well as local historical information. Breakfast was great as well. Our room overlooked the lake and was very clean and warm. There was also tea service available in the rooms which was a nice touch. We didn't want to leave!
