Check in-friendly, perfect English spoken, useful run-down of things to do and see. Room-not modern but comfortable, balcony with view of cable car/valley beyond. Internet costs 1 Euro per room for the entire stay which seems reasonable. Reserved breakfast seating too.
Downsides? none of note. I suppose the walk from the ferry with baggage on a hot, hot day was more strenuous than we would have liked. Hint-take the walk to the waterfall (30-40 minutes).

Room Tip: Get one with a private balcony

We have decided to visit Hallstatt. Unfortunately, the only available hotel was Bergfried. The only positive thing about the hotel was the friendliness of one of the hotel staff members (the young miss, apparently one of the owners), who helped us with the refund of the money for one night (because we wanted to leave earlier, because of bad weather). The hotel is located ca 100 m from the lake and "Fußgängerzone" ... Well, these are the only positive things about the hotel.
And now, the least pleasant facts: the room was large enough, albeit with a common balcony, the furniture very old, and the mattresses even older. This was not all: the breakfast (one should be extremely careful to call that "thing" a breakfast) took place in a room with medieval (looked at least so) furniture.
To conclude: no, never try it!!!

Spent only one day there..good location! very close to the cable car that takes you to the salt mines. Very friendly and supportive staff...they are very flexible and understanding..couldn't have breakfast so they replaced it with lunch..good internet connection.

Gasthof Bergfried is just a short stroll from the lake and located right at the end of the main pedestrian area of Hallstatt. Once off the ferry, just turn left and walk about 5mins down the mainstreet pass the parking barrier and turn right into a side street. We were given a room on the 1st floor that had a view of the lake from the balcony. Nice and quiet environment to enjoy the pristine beauty of Hallstatt. Room is fairly standard/basic but no WIFI.
Note : There is no lift and can be a bother if you are travelling with large luggage. Quite a workout lugging them up 2 long flights of stairs.

Room rate included breakfast. No jousting for a table is required as each table has a card with the assigned room number. Breakfast consisted of the usual rolls, bread, some cold cuts, eggs, juice and milk. Nothing fantastic but enough to satisfy your tummy.

Would we stay here again? Maybe.

Room Tip: Request for a room with a view of the lake from the balcony

The hotel is very nice. Very friendly staff. The food was ok, maybe sometimes a little basic, but certainly edible. As for the hotel bar being closed all over xmas not true. Yes they did close the bar at 10.30 on Xmas Eve, but that gave the p... heads chance to go to the local cafe bar.The hotel bar was open the other evening's. Would stay there again, also we had no problem with noise.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with partial view of the lake, very pretty.
