“A delightful surprise”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 5, 2013

Had a delightful stay here. The food is great. Our room was roomy and very comfortable. The bathroom was spotless & well-appointed. The location is right in the middle of the town. The owners and staff are very friendly and helpful. The extensive breakfast buffet is served in their elegant restaurant. We stayed 3 nights and ate dinner there every night, preferring to order from the carte rather than doing the half pension (which was a set no-choice menu with venison as a main course when we were there, since it was deer season). Unlike many restaurants, their a la carte offerings were reasonably priced. Aperitifs and wines were also reasonably priced, so we had some really enjoyable meals. Because we were there late in the season, we had to drive to Krems to do a round-trip Danube cruise to Melk, then drive back to Melk. Earlier in the year, we could have done Melk to Krems and back. We also enjoyed the Abbey and were even able to attend 0930 Mass in the spectacular church there.

We needed a break from city living and Melk was the perfect escape. The town itself is small, but manageable and the Abbey is a spectacular site. The hotel receptionist was very warm, the room spacious although a bit worn - but the restaurant was charming and had wonderful food for both breakfast and dinner! Well worth a stayover.

Room Tip: Ask for a room that will allow you to see the abbey. At night it is stunning!

Nicely located, short walk to the shops street and the Abbey walkway. They allowed us to see the rooms first and we opted to spend a bit more for the suite room. Actually, it's just a bigger room with a sofa and chair and nicer bath. We had a very nice view of the Abbey from our room, 102.

Service is very friendly and they offer free parking behind the hotel or in their nearby garage.

Breakfast was included and is very good with a lot of variety.

We enjoyed our stay in the Zur Post hotel, Melk. The bedroom was spacious and was well appointed. The public areas of the hotel were good, and especially the restaurant. Breakfast was excellent. Well located for visiting Melk Abbey and also for walking to the Danube boat pontoons.

Room Tip: We chose to add the half board option; the 3 course meal proved to be good and varied over the 3 day...

We stopped here for a couple of nights. The hotel was clean and comfortable. The rooms were well equipped, if a little on the small side. The food was good but not exceptional. We didn't fell there was an excess of warmth from the reception staff, but they were helpful enough when approached. Parts of the corridors were a little tired and needed redecorating .
The hotel has an excellent location for seeing Melk.

...great hotel facing the Melk Abbey...outdoor and garden dining..great mushroom dishes...breakfast was bountiful...quaint rooms, comfortable bedding...small parking can be an issue. Owner helped jumping our battery for the rental car. Very helpful.

My family and I stayed at this hotel in Melk, and found the accommodations to be quite charming. Unfortunately, we decided to go with the 8% discount by paying cash. ( as suggested in Rick Steve's book) Not a smart move. I carefully counted out the money needed, twice, to make sure there was no error. Then I handed it over to the woman at the desk. As I was passing the money over, my partner and I noticed a 5 Euro note slip to her desk. Interesting magical sleight of the hand. She said I was short 5 euros; we pointed out the 5 note that had dropped, and she said that was not ours and she had it there before. My partner and I argued the point, but eventually it was 1 against two, and I needed to pay an extra 5 euros. Not a major problem, but if she does this little "drop" of the money with each cash paying customer, then she might be making an extra 100 Euros a day. A lesson learned. Never hand over cash without counting it out carefully in front of the recipient, before it is passed over.

Next unprofessional problem which should horrify all guests leaving luggage in "safe storage" while they tour around ( after check-out, but before leaving the town). Normally bags are put in safe keeping either behind a locked door, or behind the receptionist's desk. ( maybe even luggage tags given!) At this hotel, they were put in the middle of the waiting area, where anyone could help themselves. No luggage tags, and no one even watching them. We came back after several hours and pulled out our laptop . No one was even watching. No staff was even nearby! We could have helped ourselves to other people's luggage also. Needless to say, I then took my laptop with me. Possibly Melk is very safe, but this is not acceptable, and I have never seen this in other more professionally run hotels. Two lessons learned. Luckily we were only short 5 Euros, but it could have been much worse. Gave us a sour taste for this hotel in Melk.
