This Benedictine monastery, which sits on a rocky outcrop above the Danube, is HUGE and a must-see if visiting Melk, as many river ships do. It costs €12.50, or €14.50 for a guided tour (€4.50 without the abbey). A guided tour is well worth the extra €2, but can be a little tedious when there are lots of tour groups, with only one group comfortably visiting each room at a time. The church is almost alarmingly opulent!

We visited this abbey on a river cruise, and it is the second time we did it. This abbey is exceptional in so many ways - well maintained, still operating, and it contains a magnificent library and cathedral. Plan to spend at least two hours, and a side tour to the city of Melk is worth additional time.

The city of Melk and the Melk Abbey were stops on our recent Danube River Cruise. The abbey tour was definitely a highlight of our cruise. The history is interesting and the property is amazing. Especially interesting is the library of handwritten books that dates back hundreds of years. Photo ops abound!!

The Abbey lives up to the billing. Just a spectacular example of art and imagination creating something that transcends it's spiritual or practical purpose. Only an idiot would tour the abbey and grounds without a guide. They provide the glue that connects the various aspects of this Baroque masterpiece in a way that provides context for its' importance. Overwhelming really.
