I was here as part of a group day trip from Vienna. The building was set high overlooking the river and the library and chapel were stunning. The tour guide, however, lacked emotion and with a soft accented voice was hard to hear at times. Most of the rooms we saw were modernized and housed things on display. Just seemed the tour can and should be more engaging and informative.

We visited as part of a tour and were shown round the interior by an informative guide who explained all about the history and enhanced many exhibits with interesting insights. The interior open to the public is laid out like a museum with many exhibits and additional access to the beautiful chapel and historic library. We had limited time to explore the extensive gardens so recommend future visitors allow an hour to fully enjoy their variety. The Abbey stands high above the River Danube and surrounding countryside giving excellent views.

We stopped off at Melk Abbey on a trip from Vienna to Salzburg. It was a very nice detour. The Abbey is beautiful and it is worth paying the entrance fee to see the beautiful library and astonishing chapel. It has an interesting history and books are available in the shop. It was a bit frustrating that you are not allowed to take photos of the library and chapel especially when people were clearly disobeying the rules and taking pictures. Parking available a short walk from the entrance down some steps and with lovely planting. Cafe just before the entrance - try the local Benedictine cake which was better than the sacher cake which was dry.

Love the setting where this Abbey is located. Nice rocky beach. Pretty courtyard with a cafe. Have a beer and a pretzel-very good! The church is the centerpiece and not to be missed. Truly incredible-get a tour so someone can explain what you are seeing. Very interesting and worthwhile. The paintings are amazing. We took a Danube Gorge Cruise oneway from Melk returned on our river cruise bus. Don’t miss this!
