The two highlights of the Abbey are the library and the church. In different ways, they were breathtaking. The library is stacked from floor to balcony to ceiling with books. High above the ceilings are decorated with trompe l'oeil paintings, increasing their apparent space.

The church has to be the apogee of Baroque art. The main altar and side chapels are encrusted with decoration. You would think that it would all be too much, but somehow it isn't. It's exuberant and balanced at the same time.

Melk Abbey as well as the whole Vachau wine valley are must sees when in Vienna.
The abbey is beautiful and easy to visit. The library is worth exploring as well.
The restaurant has good schnitzels and good beer.
Come early in the morning in order to beat the crowds as in the afternoon the busses start arriving.
A walk in the city of Melk would also be a nice addition.

Thank Akkkk

In August 2014 we have visited several monasteries in Lower Austria. This one in Melk is by far the most beautiful one. Also the exhibition is made with style and is really attractive. Don't be blinded by all the beautiful buildings, and miss the gardens. You have to visit them and see those great arrangements.

I did not have enough time to look at everything on this visit, what a wonderful place, the building and setting is magnificent. The gardens are beautiful, you need plenty of time here, at least a full day to see the real glory of the place. One day I hope I can return and spend more time looking around the place.

This is a fantastic and well preserved ancient building complex. The location is amazing and the guided tour is very interesting. The baroco style is not too crazy. The view of the abbey is also impressive from the nice village located at the bottom of it
