This B&B is conveniently located within easy walking distance of the Abbey. It is however very quirky in that there is an overabundance of "stuff", so if you have no problem with clutter then this place is OK. The rooms are adequate in size, but bathroom European small. There is neither shampoo nor conditioner in the shower. Breakfast was good and typical Austrian. The dinner meal we ate there was a bit above average for Austrian food. I would give it an overall average rating.

Bright orange room and a chef with beads in his beard may not be everybody's choice but the cheerful and relaxed (not speedy) service overcomes one's wariness of the teddy bear decor. Early morning monastery bells affect all of Melk. Food was good - breakfast was excellent and plentiful. Very good value and a real 'experience' away from bland hotels.

Quaint original building from 1736 with beautiful individual decor. We had a room with separate bathroom which meant it was cheap. The room was lovely in a quirky way. Really enjoyed our stay and had one of the best nights sleep. It felt very friendly and safe. Owners were friendly and obviously valued the history of their building. Breakfast was the best of our Austrian stay.
Wifi worked just outside of the room

Room tip: I imagine all the rooms are very different. Pictures on the website to help you choose

We had a great stay at the Gasthof Goldener Stern. They were very accommodating and were very friendly and prompt in their email communication. The location is super convenient and idyllic. Our room had a beautiful balcony where we enjoyed a view of the town.

Yes, the owners are a bit snippy in person (seems like other reviewers agree) but I think it comes down to them being very busy and keeping the place running efficiently. The bedsheets were the softest we encountered in all of Austria. The restaurant is open to the whole town and the decor is very cozy and country like. We thought the food was good, but overpriced. Though the son was a friendly waiter, he called our vacation "typical." It was odd and I'm going to assume it was a miscommunication. It just came off as a little condescending but I don't think it was intentional. My husband and I laughed later that typical American tourists would not spend two weeks just in Austria.

We have no complaints about the breakfast whatsoever. There were no extra charges and we were given plenty of food. The only thing I would change is to offer black tea instead of solely herbal.
