Steigenberger in Krems is a nice SPA-hotell. The finnish sauna meets nordic standard. The pool is large enough to allow for swimming. The breakfast is also well done, with a lot of selection. A minus for smell of smoke comming in from other rooms to the toilet, otherwise nice room. No free internet connection in the rooms give a fealing of being in a third world country.

Vistied this hotel mainly for its' relaxation facilities.

We were not disappointed. The pool, jacuzzi, saunas, steam room and relaxation centre were all spotlessly clean and well maintained. A waiter offered occasional glasses of apple juice, and tea and fruit was freely available.

On the Friday it was quite comfortable, but by Saturday afternoon it began to get really busy - though still possible to use all the facilities.

We did not test the gym, though it looked to be well equipped, however my wife took advantage of the massage services for a pedicure.

Our room was clean and nicely decorated, and the beds were comfortable.

All the front-of-house staff seemed to speak English, and were polite and helpful.

There was a healthy breakfast buffet with freshly cooked eggs and bacon available to order.

The only problem was when we followed a suggested walk across the danube - apparently the footpaths had been diverted since the map was printed - adding another 4 - 5 km to our 17km trip!

Room Tip: Non-smoking rooms available

It's just a short walk up the hill from the Danube University with stunning views over Krems Stein. The rooms are different, some of the standard rooms have a balcony, some have not. Beware of the top floor on hot summer days, there is no air conditioning in the whole hotel. The breakfast is very good, the sundeck is nice for a drink and a view. Beware with parking, the outdoor parking is very limited and they charge you 10 Euros a day for parking in the garage.

In fact, I chose this hotel for the airconditioning, that apparently, they didn't have. Travelling to the Wachau valley in August I was afraid of the lack of air....which came to pass...very very little movement of air. The beautiful updated suites are all placed perpendicular to the river so there is no movement of air....they finally gave us a room (one of the only ones in the hotel) that faces the direction of the river and we left the windows wide open. The hotel is ok, the staff is extremely accomodating and the price with half board seemed fair to us. The food was wonderful, we ate like kings every night. The area is gorgeous and just to take a car and travel from Krems to Melk is a breathtaking experience in itself. Although the food was wonderful, there are many wonderful Heuringen in the area, interesting places to eat, interesting small places to stay....I am not sure I would choose this hotel next time I am in this area.

After spending four nights at the arte Hotel, I stayed a couple of nights at the Steigenberger. After the ultra modern arte, Steigenberger rooms seemed rather oudated and in need of refurbishment. However, they were pleasant enough. The breakfast was good, with lots of items on offer. The best part of the hotel was the outdoor terraces and pool as well as the gorgeous wellness center with its infinity pool and several saunas. A wonderful oasis to unwind in after a busy day. The views from the hotel were gorgeous, you could see the Danube and the old town...

The hotel is located in the vineyards outside the city. The location is great, there is an outdoor swimming pool that also serves as a great lookout point over the Wachau area. The restaurant has a terrace with a great view over the vineyards (don't miss it). I've stayed there multiple times and it's always been a nice and relaxing experience. Fitness and wellness center as well as the business center and some rooms were completely refurbished recently and are of very high standard.

Steigenberger has some strong assets, especially its location, swimming pools and saunas. Rooms are average, so is breakfast. Staff is helpful and nice, but this obviously is a hotel for non-foreigners. Nothing is written in another language and people that stay there are mostly Austrians. It does not mean that foreigners are unwelcome, it just shows that very few go to Steigenberger. The hotel is full everytime I go there so business should be good. If I had the choice, I guess I would stay elsewhere for leisure. Again, not bad, but not for us foreigners.
