“Never again! Nie wieder!”
Reviewed September 23, 2012

If you don't pay up extra but choose the somewhat cheaper rooms (which are still rather expensive) you get dumped in the old tract where rooms are darkish, smelly and a bit scabby---don't know about the other ones ("Genießerzimmer").
Most of the place looks onto the heavy-traffic Wachau road though some trees fence you off a little.
I rented an e-bike and had an serious accident (no information had been given about extremely powerful brakes by the hotel staff!) that put me into emergency, and their main reaction to my family who stayed on for another night was to [--] about the scratched bicycle. Two months later Ms. Pfeffel sent me bill for a "service visit" by their repair shop (€171) without much comment.
Well, they certainly won't see us again...

Dear Mr. WernR,

our rooms in the category „Federspiel“ are – like shown on our homepage – in the older part of our hotel. For this reason the price is lower than in the rooms of the new part of our house. The use of our 1200 qm Penthouse SPA is surely included as well as free parking place and breakfast from the buffet.

All rooms of our Gartenhotel Pfeffel are overlooking the Danube river and offers a fantastic view. In front of our house on the border of den Danube is the Wachau road situated – the street, where you could reach the Wachau valley, the villages and houses. It isn’t a busy street and not noisy at night, because it is mostly used by (day) tourists or locals.

If you rent our bicycles or e-bike you need to fill out a form and sign those, as a confirmation that you are able to ride a bike. So our bikes are only lend to people who already know how to ride a bike. The function of the brakes are, of course, flawless. After your accident, we picked up the bike and ordered the service to repair it and tested it to its functionality. This occasions costs money, which has to be paid by the perpetrator respectively his insurance.

We wish you all the best.

With the best regards
Family Pfeffel

Thank you very much for taking the time to write those friendly words.
We are happy that you enjoyed staying with us.

2010 was a year of building work in the Gartenhotel & Weingut Pfeffel Dürnstein. The ancient part of the hotel got completely renovated and the new main building got constructed.

The highlight is the large panoramic spa area on the top floor, with 5 saunas, a heated outdoor pool, a big sun terrace, and a stunning view over the danube valley.

Mostly all rooms of the Gartenhotel Pfeffel offer balconies and river view.
In our restaurant “Himmelsstiege” we are serving Austrian cuisine with international influences. Also many homegrown or produced foods, like herbs, honey, goat milk and eggs are handled in our dishes.

Wine from the own vineyard, which can also be tasted in the wine bar, is served as well.

We really hope we could welcome you some day again in our hotel and remain
With the best regards from the springlike Wachau valley

Fabulous place in the fantastic location! I would definitely rate this hotel as a four-star one. The rooms are spotless and very bright. We booked an upgraded room and the first room we were shown in was a three-level one. It was very modern and comfy, but the stairs are too specific a feature to fit all guests. The second room was a bit more in the classic style, but much more spacious. The view over the river was beautiful! There is a large parking space on the ground level and a terrific spa-center with four kinds of saunas and an outside swimming pool. The pool is heated, so you can swim all year round. However, it is a bit of an extreme experience to get out of the warm water when it is zero outside. The restaurant is really nice and worth going for dinner. Although the hotel is family-run the service is professional and very attentive to details. The only dissapointment were breakfasts.

This is in a beautiful area, only 5 minutes walk outside Durnstein, so perfect for seeing the very pretty village after the majority of tourists have gone.

Quite a big hotel, so it was a bit of a walk to our room on the edge. Lots of recommendations for things to do, wine tasting, walking tours, pre-breakfast tai chi on the terrace etc

Excellent breakfast with just about everything you could imagine available on the buffet. The restaurant, though, was overpriced, so we only ate there one night, preferring the local heuriger just down the road.some waiters are trained that way!

Staff were mostly very nice and polite, with the odd slightly snooty man. Maybe

Very beautiful hotel, friendly staff, spacious rooms with beautiful views. The place was a little quite and children did not seem very welcome...though the staff was very helpful and sweet towards them. The best part was fruit laden trees in their gardens which the kids really enjoyed. We did not get a chance to experience their spa, but it seemed to be very nice. Would love to go back there without kids.

Room Tip: Rooms have open bathrooms, so not very convinient if you are sharing a room with your children.

Dear travelbuffMumbai,

Thank you for your rating. The entire garden hotel team was happy about your kind words. We are sorry if the impression should be released, that children are not welcome. Our hotel offers up a more extensive recreational program for adults. We look forward to your visit. Next time, hopefully you can spend an extended stay in our spa area.

Review of Gartenhotel Weingut Pfeffel, Durnstein, Austria

If the little touches make all the difference in a hotel experience, then the Gartenhotel Pfellel in Durnstein, Austria has a lot to learn. What did they not offer? Decor that matched the price, a location close to something to see and service that equals what we have found everywhere else in Austria.

This is an expensive hotel that tries to justify its very high cost by calling itself a spa. But it fails to achieve the spa experience. Our room looked like the European equivalent of a Wal-Mart clearance, circa 1980. All the furniture was cheap wood, painted pink. The outdoor-grade carpet was cheap and also from 1980.

Granted, the pool and sun deck are very nice—I have never seen a stainless steel pool anywhere before. But the spa never seemed to be actually open when my family and I were there. And the hotel did not allow alcoholic drinks on the pool deck. What gives? This is supposed to be a vacation!

We tried to book for a family of three through booking.com. The system would only allow us to book a minimum of two nights. We had to contact Booking .com to ask them to make a call to the hotel and change the arrangements for us. Then, we did not get an extra towel, housecoat, slippers or even a glass. And for a hotel that calls itself a "weingut," or vineyard, they did not even have wine glasses in the room.

Because we only stayed one night, the hotel charged us a higher rate, and then another 30 euros for our son. Sorry, the really bad fold-out bed and the breakfast were not worth 30 euros. The "mattress" was about an inch thick.

Yes, like all Austrian hotels, it was very clean. The food was good, but not great. And we found out it was over a kilometre outside of the town of Durnstein—there was nothing else around.

We had a much better place in Vienna and in the Salzkammergut, for less money.

So, for the price, the Hotel Weingut Pfeffel is not a good value.

Thank you very much for taking the time for our hotel.
We are happy that you were satisfied with our cleanness and the Spa.

2010 was a year of building work in the Gartenhotel & Weingut Pfeffel Dürnstein. The ancient part of the hotel got renovated and the new main building got constructed.
Mostly all rooms of the Gartenhotel Pfeffel offer balconies and river view.

In our restaurant “Himmelsstiege” we are serving Austrian cuisine with international influences. Also many home-grown or produced foods, like herbs, honey, goat cheese and eggs are handled in our dishes.

The highlight is the large panoramic spa area on the top floor, with 5 saunas, a heated outdoor pool, a big sun terrace, and a stunning view over the Danube valley. Our homepage as well as the information folder in our rooms and the information wall in our elevator informs you about the timetable of our SPA (the SPA-area is open from 8 a.m to 9p.m and the sauna-area from 2 p.m to 7 p.m). For security reasons in belonging of the sauna use it is not allowed to consume alcoholic drinks in the top floor (that is written law in Austria, the handling may be different in the hotels).

Our hotel offers different room categories, some room categories fit better for families than others. You booked your room via a booking engine in the smallest category of the old building. If you got any desires please contact the hotel directly to find the best offer and opportunity for you.

Our homepage and the booking system as well informs you about the location of the hotel which is about 10 minutes’ walk from Dürnstein, exactly 900 meters in the west of the center of Dürnstein.

Surely we welcome children since the younger generation of the Pfeffel family are a number of six, but we are not a “kids hotel”, because we are primarily specialized in Wellness & Spa combined with meeting facilities and wine.

We are really sorry that the chambermaid forgot the glass for your son. Slippers are always available at the reception (wellness information paper informs about the handling of the wellness facilities), but we only have one sized pairs, same for the bathrobes.

Since you stayed only one night therefor we charged you our short stay rate which is absolutely normal (and also offered to you and written in the information of our house). The Euro 30,00 for the extra bed incl. breakfast (as you find in our offer as well as in the information in the booking system), the use of the Spa area and infrastructure are obvious on our homepage.

We are very sorry for the misunderstandings and we really hope we could welcome you someday again in our hotel and remain

with the best regards from the springlike Wachau valley

We really lucked out on this hotel. We were travelling day-to-day in Austria and planned to cycle on the Danube but couldn't find anywhere to stay from Melk to Krems. This quiet hotel just outside of Krems in Durnstein was amazing. The hotel was recently renovated in 2010, and while we were in the old wing, the rooms here were renovated and were spotless, comfortable and completely updated.
The wireless internet ran perfectly on a laptop, iphone and ipad using Skype and remote access software, the internet speeds were the fastest we've encountered to date.
We had our own private balcony where we were able to sit and watch the boats go by on the Danube while sipping wine!
The hotel owners and staff were genuinely friendly and helpful. Bikes can be rented for 10 Euro/day and advice given for bike routes to travel was just what we needed.
Our room faced the road but there is a large wall completely screening the very light traffic and the hotel was extremely quite.
Breakfast was included for the special rate of 98 Euro/night (internet). Krems is just 7 minutes away if you need more shopping.
This was a perfect, quiet little place to stop for a couple of days!
