I wrote in detail about our dining experience in my hotel review, so read that for more details. But I will just say here that it was a fantastic restaurant (especially if you are a foodie). After eating here, I didn't really want to move on to our next destination of Vienna. Staying in the hotel and eating more meals at the restaurant in their beautiful garden courtyard seemed like something I could do for weeks.

“A great find on our way to a different restaurant!”
Reviewed September 25, 2013

We stayed at an excellent b/b in Durnstein and the owner mentioned the Richard Lowenherz as being a good if expensive place to eat. As we arrived in the "square, we notice the Sanger Blondel, had a look through a window, read the menu and thought---this is for us. And it was! possibly a tad brightly-lit but good -sized tables, napery, cutlery etc. Very pleasant lady to serve us ; we had 2 glasses of marillensekt (a sort of apricot-flavoured fizz) @ 3.60 euros each. then we had 1) blood sausage with potato salad and 2) a sort of ravioli with pork.
This we followed with 1) deer in sauce with 1/2 pear stuffed with cranberries aand 2) roast beef with apricots. HE then had Wachertorte and I had hot chocolate . We had a very nice wine...the bill came to 81 euros and we were well-pleased with the food and the price. We loved Durnstein, especially at night when the "tourists" (not us, of course!!) had gone and we'd like to visit again and definitely eat at the Sanger Blondel again...though it would be nice to try the other one.............!

“A home on holiday!”
Reviewed September 23, 2013

My wife and I stayed here for four days in September 2013 - and we are so glad we did. The Schendl family, and all their staff, could not have been nicer and more helpful. We only had to mention that we were thinking of going somewhere for information and help about that place to be produced; we would not have seen so much of the region without their help. The room was very comfortable and clean as a new pin (English expression meaning "clean as new"). The breakfast table made us feel spoilt for choice, it was so good and one's only problem was not eating too much! The dinners we had in the flower bedecked garden, just under the shadow of the church tower will remain in our memory for years . The flowers are a personal hobby of the proprietor and it shows - a real riot of gorgeous colour when we were there. Dinner itself, in this wonderful setting, was each night so tasty and good.

We went out each day, knowing we had "a good home" to return to, and were very sorry when our holiday came to an end.

The story of "Sanger Blondel" was one of the first stories I heard at primary school and it has always stuck in my mind (never thinking that I would one day get to the actual castle); now it is enhanced by the good time we had at the Hotel Sanger Blondel - a hotel we will long remember.

“Not a warm welcome”
Reviewed September 13, 2013 via mobile

Durnstein is a lovely village and the highlight of our stay was a wonderful dinner on the terrace of the neighbouring Schloss Durnstein but we found that Sanger Blondel was a bit of a downer by comparison. The room was not that comfortable and the service was lacking, treating every request with a tired resignation of one who knows that the customers are there for one day only and therefore not worth the bother. The terrace is pleasant but with no views and the food is not particularly memorable either.

“Highlight of our Melk - Durnstein-Krems itinerary”
Reviewed June 19, 2013

Our whole day from Vienna to Melk - Durnstein-Krems was a memorable one. The Durnstein village itself is so charming and the lunch at Sanger Blondel was the highlight of our day. Location-Awesome, Garden seating, amazing view of the river, very close to the boat stop and bus stop, Food - Hot! Tasty!Vegetarian too!, Service - Amazing and polite and helpful staff, we personally thanked the chef too! We had an all vegetarian order and loved every dish. Highly recommended even to go all the way from Vienna :)
