“Average accommodation, good food”
Reviewed March 12, 2013

Accommodation was basic and clean. Food was very good and there was plenty of it. Staff were pleasant, especially Jim the chef, Afternoon tea was a nice touch although i was glad we had brought our own jar of coffee as the stuff provided was undrinkable.
On the downside, the chalet was uncomfortably hot and very noisy with lots of doors banging & disturbance from guests returning in early hours of he morning. Soundproofing in the rooms was pretty poor. The combination of these factors made it difficult to get a good night's sleep.
Overall the chalet was reasonable for the price paid and would be excellent if it was quieter and cooler.

Just waiting for our transfer home after our first visit to Andorra, staying at the Chalet Casale. My wife and I had a fantastic week, and the chalet staff were excellent. Evening meals were superb, home cooked and plentiful - Jim the chef was happy to share his recipes! Breakfast was a self-service continental offering, with the option of a full English for €5. Drinks and cakes in the afternoon were welcome when we returned from the slopes (after a hard slog up the hill back from the ski lockers!).

The only slight criticism of the chalet was that it was so hot all the time! We soon learnt to turn off all the radiators in the rooms and corridors, but the underfloor heating still kept the place warm. You didn't need a jumper on for the meals.

We hadn't been skiing for 15 years, so decided on El Tartare as a low cost introduction to see if we could still manage a week's intensive exercise. The ski area has everything you could wish for, with a wide range of runs for all abilities (except maybe for absolute beginners). Most of the blue runs had some challenging sections, and talking to other people in the evening there were plenty of red, black and off piste options for skiers and boarders alike.

We will definitely be looking to return next year, and the Chalet Casale will be our first choice.

I have just returned from a week long stay at the Chalet Casale with 6 friends and would happily recommend it to anyone wanting to stay in El Tarter.

The rooms were clean, small, but adequate but the size didn't bother me as we spent little time in there. We were in a room overlooking the main road which became noisy at 5am when the snow plows started (we had 2 metres of snow in 2 days!) but this would easily be rectified by some earplugs. Remember to take toiletries and a hair dryer as these are not provided in the rooms. If you want extra pillows just ask and the staff will happily provide more.

All of the staff were extremely friendly and would help with anything we needed / wanted. Jim, the chef, was a very good cook and we all looked forward to the 3 course meals in the evenings. Examples of food we had were: Lasagne, curry, sausage casserole, roast pork, cottage pie, soups, chocolate orange mouse and sticky toffee pudding - good wholesome food that was well appreciated after a day on the slopes! There was plenty of wine to go round at dinner but the red left a lot to be desired.

Breakfast was the typical continental breakfast (ham, cheese, toast, croissants etc) but for an extra 5 euros you could have a cooked English breakfast. If you make it back down from the slopes on time there is also afternoon tea and cakes for everyone - you won't go hungry here! Jim was also very good catering to anyone with specific dietary requirements.

The chalet was always very warm (partially thanks to the lovely heated floors!) so you don't need to wear lots of layers inside. Outdoor footwear has to be kept in the boot room so take a pair of slippers for wandering around in.

There is plenty of space to relax in the evenings, have a drink and chill out. There are also plenty of activities to keep you entertained as well. We went to the quiz night which was a lot of fun as well as 'Soldeu by Night' in the next village over which involved throwing yourself down the mountain on a body board or giant rubber ring. Sadly the weather on the mountain was horrendous when we went (there was a whiteout!) but it was still fun and worth a visit if the weather forecast is good.

Chalet Casale has a nice, homely feel to it and is great for groups of friends. Just be prepared for the walk back up the hill from the slopes at the end of the day!

This was a late booking for a group of 10.....and thanks to the reviews here....especially Hills86, I decided to book this chalet....and was really pleased I did! I've been on a number of chalet holidays and can say that the Chalet Casale was great. The chalet was clean and warm not to mention the hospitality which was superb....food was plentiful and of a good standard. There were 40 people in total in the chalet but it never felt overbearing or crammed.

On good advice I booked the top floor away from the noise....though the corridors were still quite echoey...I'm a light sleeper, but only used earplugs on the first night (someone was still unpacking downstairs at midnight?!!!).The room itself (502) was of a reasonable size with an ensuite which had a shower over a bath, which was great on the two ocassions I decided to have a soak after a long day in the powder! The furniture was basic but sound and the linen looked as if it had been well used (but clean). The room has a safe which was handy for locking stuff away while we were out....and for one of our group....yes towels are provided (changed once during the week) but not toiletries.

Breakfast is continental with tea, coffee, juice, cereals, fruit, yoghurt, warm pastries, cheese, ham, boiled eggs and toast. Afternoon tea is a great cake and tea/coffee. Evening meal consists of 3 courses with half a bottle of wine. There is a small bar which serves beer, spirits and wine.....can't really go wrong at €6 for a bottle of wine!

The nearest chairlift is a 5-10minute walk...a good warm up! Though if you hire your skis/boards you can keep these free of charge in a locker near the lift....good tip is to pre-book the ski/board packs as these are great value....There is a bar about 50metres down the road which has 241 cocktails 5:30-6:30pm....good après! Soldeu is a 5 min bus journey which cost €1.40 and has more bars/shops.....taxis are expensive.... You can walk back....though this can result in some unexplained drinking injuries!

In summary a great place to stay in El Tarter!

Room Tip: Top floor is quieter as it is furthest away from the lounge.

My first catered chalet holiday and I would definitely recommend Chalet Casale. Staff amazingly friendly and all the food you could eat at night, and gorgoues cake in the afternoons. Really warm and rooms a good size. Beautiful stone walls and tiled floors with underground heating. Lovely large room with leathers sofas to lounge in at night and a little bar. Its five minute walk to the bottom of the slopes which is great too.

The only down points for me ( if any) is that its an uphill walk each day after skiing but not too bad.And id advise to take ear plugs if youre a light sleeper as 40 people staying there who go to bed at different times so if youre an early bird on the slopes its safer in case the apres skiers stay out a little later .

Room Tip: All rooms that I saw absolutely spotless, loads of storage, great size bathroom.......remember to ta...

Our first skiing trip. Family of 4. Kids ages 6&7. The staff couldn't possibly have been any more helpful. The rooms were spotlessly clean, warm & basic.
The food was plentiful and all very homemade.
If you are going with a family it's very safe and small enough that the kids can float about freely.
It's a great place to go if you're just starting out. Full marks to Neilson too. Amazing service!

We booked this chalet mainly as it fit within our budget, When we arrived we were greeted with afternoon tea and coffee and warm welcome. Neilson provided a very good welcome talk and we felt happy we had made the right decision on the holiday.

Food every day was exceptional and plenty to go around along with ample wine. Afternoon tea was also great, perfect when getting back from the slopes.

Rob & Katie tend to every need and nothing is too much trouble.

The chalet is a 5 minute walk from the gondola, at first it felt like miles but this was mainly due to excitement of getting on the slopes, after the first day the short walk was actually a nice way to start the day.

All in all a superb chalet in a superb resort.

We don't usually go back to somewhere we have been before but we are already contemplating a return next season.
