“Hard to Find”
Reviewed August 19, 2013

We arrived by car after a long day and were surprised at how urban Andorra was.
On arrival, we had difficulty locating the car parking and reception as the Micolau seems to be one part of a larger complex with several names.
Our room smelled of cigarettes, which was probably emphasised by the used cigarette ends being in a plastic cup behind the door.

Dinner was over the road in a cafe and was average (burgers and things)
Breakfast was in the same cafe and was simple.
The rooms were very small.

Room Tip: Probably an excellent base for skiing. Not a good choice for an overnight touring stop

excellent location close to ski gondola and access to great bars/cafe's/restaurant. Had a twin room with b&b, small but perfectly adequate being clean and warm, great bathroom & shower + free wifi.
really friendly & helpful staff (reception across road in St Moritz building) and surprise pack up breakfast hand delivered night prior to early departure - top service!
wouldn't hesitate to stop here again.

Room Tip: twin room no5 - but all rooms would be good standard based on my experience. No lift but only ground...

Rooms cosy and clean. Great location for all pubs and restaurants. Close to ski gondola. Perfect if you are looking for somewhere convenient and basic. Great Irish pub right next door - The Derby Inn. Also has great little restaurant - Deja Vu. Breakfast was rather limited, toast and muffins. But overall it was a great week.

Having just returned from a holiday at the Micolau with my husband and 3 teenage children, I cannot praise the hotel highly enough. We had 3 double rooms and all were clean with nice bathrooms and plenty of space for us all. The hotel staff were really friendly and the food was great. We stayed half board and were all impressed with the menu. We were given bacon and eggs for breakfast to set us up for the day's skiing. The hotel is literally across the road from the gondola. Would definitely stay at the Micolau again.

Just back from a week snowboarding in arinsal. Travelled with husband and step son so separate rooms were a must! We stayed in room 8 in the eves. One modern bathroom with a bath and two bedrooms! Perfect! Small rooms with no view but we prefer our view when boarding so no problem.

We didn't find it noisy at all! In fact last year we stayed in a large 4* in arinsal and found it much more noisey with banging doors and shouting late into the night. Because the micolau is so small, you don't get this.

This hotel is a 2* because they choose to keep it a 2*. Changes to the rating would make the hotel lose its charm and atmosphere. It's a gem of a hotel.

Breakfast is a selection of bread/croissants/cereal, bacon and eggs and fresh coffee, juice, tea. What else do you need? Dinner has choice of 6 starters and main courses. A little limited but mostly a special was put on which was always nice too.

Location couldn't get any better as next to the gondola and the pub,

Friendly staff made us very welcome and the best strawberry daiquiri I have ever tasted made by the rather handsome bagman!

Overall! Awesome time. Let's face it, some people were born to moan about the little things in life. Me! I prefer to praise the good stuff! Thanks to the micolau, our holiday was full of good stuff,

Have just got back from an enjoyable week in Arinsal, and reading some of the recent bad reviews which are a bit unfair, I feel compelled to write my own. We were 3 friends staying in the family room (can sleep 4) which was on the 3rd floor in the eaves (stairs only). The rooms are small but clean and cosy, with wooden beams making for a lodge type feel. The hotel only has 9 rooms which adds to the relaxed and cosy feel. There are very small cupboards but we were fine to live out of the suitcases. The bathroom was modern and clean. In the eaves the only windows are in the roof, which have electric blinds and opening (and a nice view if you stand on the bed!). Both rooms had a TV with BBC World and CNN being the English channels. We barely needed the heating the week was so mild, and there was always hot water. We were half board, which includes 3 courses for dinner and either eggs and bacon or a continental breakfast. It was always well cooked, with simple tasty food just done well. Drinks are not that cheap anywhere in the resort town (we admittedly didn’t exactly explore that much), but they do put monster measures in spirit drinks. The location is an central as you can get, with a shop and hire facility opposite, 1 min walk to the gondola (and of course the Irish bar next door). The staff are friendly and welcoming. In terms of noise at night, we heard the odd drunken shouts or very feint music in the early hours, but it never affected our enjoyment or sleep that much (we were in the roof remember though). I have had a lot worse in other places, and even at home in my suburban village! Its a compromise for being in a central location after all. The walls are thin though, I for instance I could hear even a phone vibrating on silent on a table next door - lucky we had a quite quiet couple next door if you catch my drift! They have a location in the garage of the opposite apartments to store skis, but we found this too much hassle after one day and just kept them in the room, boots are stored in lockers in the reception area. In terms of apres ski there are bars dotted around the streets, but I think we went so full out on the slopes we were too knackered to really go mad in the evenings, but of our limited experience we wouldn’t say its a party capital like a few seem to make out. Worst thing about Andorra has to be smoking is still allowed indoors, its easy to forget how unpleasant that can be for non smokers. This includes the bar/restaurant in Micolau, but not as bad as other places like the Irish Bar as not normally that busy. On to the skiing, we were 2 second timers and 1 first timer, and we found Arinsal had a good mix of wide slopes to learn and hone skills. Some areas can get busy lower down with beginners. We went without tuition (against many peoples advise) but all learnt quickly and enjoyed pushing ourselves at our own pace. There had been a good dump of snow the week before but the week we went was very very mild, the issue was keeping cool not warm. This meant that some slope areas got slushy and cut up by the end of the day. Andorra does seem to get less snow than other traditional ski locations, but they manage the pistes very well overnight with snow making facilities, and always seem to get them in good order by the morning. I would recommend a free trip across to Pal on the cable car, as provides a nice difference from Arinsal. Where Arinsal is quite wide and straight up and down, Pal has more twisting scenic routes which are slightly more challenging. In terms of the journey it is a long trip (from Toulouse Airport) and we had 4am wakes ups going both ways. Overall a good value skiing holiday for beginners in a hotel which you can trust you will have an enjoyable stay in.

This hotel is a small gem. The staff go out of their way to make your stay special, and are full of information. Yes the rooms are small, but it's not as if you don't know that when you book. They are tastefully decorated and the bathrooms are brand new. The hotel is, like most buildings in Arinsal, right up against the street. So there is likely to be some street noise. My second floor street facing room had some noise, but it wasn't intrusive. While it's true that one of the most popular bars is two doors down, I didn't hear any noise either night I was there. I did hear people leaving the bar at 3 am, but that's no different than any other hotel in a similar location. All the "negative" reviews need to be weighed against the amazing price you pay, the awesome location, and the warm, friendly and helpful staff.
