“Jordi's mashed potatoes knocked my socks off”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 11, 2011

We have dined at Jordi's twice and wanted to the third time but he was closed (El Crostó is closed on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, sniff...); instead we went to Can Manel as recommended by an acquaintance who is local and enjoys great gastronomy but if you are interested then read all about it on the review for Can Manel:-)

Continue on with El Crostó, chef Jordi who is also the waiter and comedian at the same time. Chef Jordi reads the menu right off the top of his head and expects you to remember the long lists of first and second as he "sings" them out loud with a few jokes about how he got a hold of some of the ingredients. He does it fluently in Spanish, Catalan or French, but don't fret if you only speak English since he has a general knowledge of the English language when it comes to food.
The dishes that we had were spectacular, my oxtail was out of this world but the taste was overshadowed by his mashed potatoes at my first spoon of it. And therefore, the second time we visited him, chef Jordi gave me a biggest portion of mashed potatoes prepared in a two layered cake topped with red potatoes; tasty like the first time but more satisfying the second time around. We shared every bite of the cake like it was the first and last thing we will ever eat. His fuet (Catalan sausage)and cured bacon are also great to have while waiting for the food, the fuet is made with more meat than pork fat. We asked for some fuet to take home but Jordi gave us a whole thing to enjoy for days.
Whatever you eat, do not forget to save some room for his selection of desserts:-D
All dishes are excellently prepared with hand picked and selected ingredients to ensure the best results from Jordi's laboratory. So, just be brave and try whatever he recommends.
There are no prices since the menu was read out to us but at the end of the meal, the damage was minimal €70 for the fist time and €90 for the second.

El Crostó is located in a corner of a tiny alley but not impossible to find since Andorra la Vella is a very small but very busy tourist town surrounded by beautiful mountain views at every turn. People are very pleasant and amicable, do not hesitate to ask even if you do not speak Catalan. Reservation at El Crostó is a must, the restaurant has a total of 6 tables.
If you plan to go to Andorra in summer time, please remember that he will be closed for summer vacation around August (if I remember correctly). Jordi enjoys his cross-country road trip on his motorcycle.

Ah, el crostó (el crostó de pa) means the hard ends of a loaf of french bread in Catalan. It also has other meanings but this is not a Catalan language course.

“Excelente comida”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 9, 2011

“THE BEST!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 1, 2011

We went to El Crosto last night for my birthday dinner, following recommendations here on TripAdvisor. It was a wednesday night and except for one other table we had the place to ourselves. It is a little hard to find, around a corner and with only a small sign, and inside is one little room lined with pigs and vodka bottles.

There is no menu (he will just tell you what is being served), and unless you speak Catalan, French or Spanish it is best to just have him 'recomanar' (recommend). We did this because we only speak english.

I can guarantee though that whatever you eat will be wonderful! My husband and I had an apple and mushroom salad and the pasta for starters, The 'grill' (essentially steak and chips, but amazing) and the duck on onions (well, I think that was what it was! It was good!), and for dessert we shared a plate of chocolate pieces wrapped in parcels, deep fried and dipped in coulis...... O.M.G.!

When he found out it was my birthday he also brought out chocolate truffles (one with a candle in the top) and sang me happy birthday in Catalan :-) He was a wonderful, funny and very entertaining host.

We didn't ask for prices along the way (too hard because we only speak english) With bread, meats and olives to start, all that I have mentioned, and a bottle of wine our bill was €60.... amazing value!!

Don't hesitate, if you are in Andorra la Vella just spoil yourself and go there - you wont regret it!!
