“Great Location”
Reviewed August 27, 2013

Stayed here for 2 weeks with friends - Great location!

As stated in previous comments hotel is slightly dated but it's spotless, linen/towels smelt clean and fresh. Very slight problem with ants. Staff nice. Stayed in room 404, was bit noisy til about 2am but didn't bother us as we were right in the heart of everything, with a sea and pool view. WIFI downstairs in lobby, was great for our teenage kids they disappeared as soon as the were ready for an evening out, giving us a bit of peace! Pool spotless, enough lounger to fit the side of the pool, but did witness the towels out on the loungers early and one group of people were even down the beach whilst their towels were reserving their loungers! Could have done with a few more umbrellas for July/August sun. Would advise you take extra cash for the aircon as you'll need it and it's additional when you get there!

Rockafellers is brilliant, went there quite a lot, entertainment great, hotel restaurant ok. Plenty of places to eat and drink could have stayed for 3 weeks!

Beach 2 minutes away, 2 x loungers and umbrella only 7 euros for the day. Lots of water sports and snorkelling. If you like snorkelling then take a banana with you, a lady at the beach said she always does this as the fish love them!

Wishing we were still there.

Just returned from 2 weeks holiday on the fantastic island of Cyprus of which we have been on several occasions, and thoroughly enjoyed being surrounded by friendly people and wonderful surroundings. But this time we had the misfortune of staying in the Melini Apartments Protaras. We chose Melini with the help of Thomas Cook travel who in turn seemed to omit certain specifications of the package, Like the extra cost of air conditioning in the apartments which was something we had not budgeted for, and to me seems very expensive at €5 per unit per day when you need 2 units to keep the apartment cool, i think €5 per apartment would not have been such a ripoff. The rooms were not the cleanest and in urgent need of an update, the same goes for the emergency generator which failed on a grand scale when we had a power cut.
The staff did not strike me as being very helpful or particularly friendly as i've read in other reviews. The pool area is ok with plenty of sunloungers to go around however the sea is a lot clearer than the pool itself, and i was surprised to say the least when people were drinking from GLASS glasses around and even IN the pool.
Protaras itself is a great place to stay with good bars filled in the most part with friendly helpful staff, restaurants, shops and a cracking beach that as a decent array of watersports for those who wish to partake, however you will need to be up and on the beach early to get a good spot. I will definitely go back to Protaras for a holiday but the nearest i'll ever go to the Melini Apartments again, is to eat in the Island Affairs restaurant or on my way past to Cheers.

We have today returned from 2 fantastic weeks at the Melini hotel in Protaras. The location is right in the middle of the resort so everything is on hand. As there were 3 of us we were allocated one of the long rooms with the big balcony rather than the apartments with separate bedrooms and it was perfect for us. Our room was cleaned every day bar 3 (including the day we left). The room and the hotel were immaculately clean. The staff were all very friendly and I was surprised that there were no issues in trying to get sunbeds in the morning.

The only minor negatives with the hotel were a small ant problem (i've been to cyprus 3 times and the ants seems to be everywhere!!)and the noise late at night from Rockafellas bar (not too much of a nuisance but if you're not asleep by midnight then be prepared to be awake until about 2am!!)

The local amenities are also excellent Rossos Bakery over the road from the hotel being a favourite of ours. The Ice cream parlour which is part of the hotel is also very very good and reasonably priced too (our 5 year old seemed to live there!)

Foodwise the hotel's restaurant is okay but just about everywhere in the resort does excellent food depending on what you're after (We'd recommend Nicolas Tavern for traditional Greek and Cheers Pub wins our award for the best breakfast)

In short we'd go back in a second.

Room Tip: All rooms face the pool from what we could see. Rooms 106 and 107 appear to be smaller but have mass...

OK lets start by saying, if you look for negatives then you will find them. So I'm going to give you both the positives and highlight some things that could be improved.

Positive:
The location is superb for the beaches, bars, restaurants etc, the apartments were very clean and the staff were very friendly. People complained about there being new sun loungers sealed at the side of the pool while they sat on crappy old ones. I spoke to the manager and she had them put out immediately, all you have to do is ask nicely! The food and drinks were very good too. The pool was cleaned regularly and the bedding and towels changed every third day.

Things that could be improved:
The beds weren't the most comfortable, we were only allowed one pillow each (I asked for more but they didn't have any spares), the pillows were lumpy and poor quality, the whole place is in need of an update and the air con (which we got included in our deal) was very poor in both apartments we hired.

I have to say that we as a family only used the room as a base and somewhere to sleep so the fact that it requires updating didn't bother us. As I said the place was very clean and the staff very helpful, yes if you give them attitude they will give it back, they're only human!

The smaller studio apartment did have an ant problem which we sorted our selves by buying some spray from local supermarket and giving the room a good spray before we went out each time, this kept them at bay!

The beaches were beautiful but we couldn't get on Fig Tree Bay beach as you had to be up very early to get a spot. The closest beach was a little rocky but great for snorkelling.
Rockerfellas had entertainment on every night, some good (Rihanna, Country singer (girl) & Soul man), some very poor (madness/Blues brothers singers) but the gimmick with the car and dancing and singing in the street got peoples attention. Rives had a great atmosphere & the girls were great, very pretty and very friendly. We tried most restaurants, Happy days was very good, Cheers is great and very very cheap, they also did the best breakfasts. There is an Italian and a steak house owned by same person, they were very friendly and most meals were very good plus you get a free cocktails after every meal, even the kids (alcohol free of course) Friends bar was ok but the Love Boat was way overpriced and I mean way way overpriced.

Be careful when buying gifts as most shops have a no refund, return policy. If your buying iPhone covers check there sizes properly, if you ask them if its the right one they will just say yes to get the sale and then refuse to refund!

Overall we had a great family holiday, me. my wife, kids aged 21, 16 & 13. Plenty to do on the beach, water sports etc but can be expensive. We would definitely visit the area again although probably not this hotel. We never go back to the same place twice, not because it was bad.

The manger (she was very feisty in a good way) was very helpful no matter what you asked of her and her team. Oh we also hired a fan for the rooms due to the poor air con, for 13 euros for 7 days I didn't think it was too bad.

Give this place a try I think you'll pleasantly surprised and my wife says the Chillz bar evening waiter makes the best Long Island Ice Tea cocktail ever but i think it was coz he was a bit dishy too ha ha, the ice cream parlour was too tasty too, great holiday overall!

Room Tip: We got a sea view which was very nice, the noise isn't too bad as the double glazing is quite go...

We booked a last minute cheap break for a family of four; two adults and two teenagers. £ 2300 got us two weeks in the sun in a one bedroom appartment at the Melini. This is a straight forward set of appartments. Simple and very clean. The appartments are ideally situated right in the heart of Protaras. What do you need to know? Air con is payable locally at €5 per unit per day. A one bedroomed appartment consists of a unit in the bedroom and one in the lounge area, so if you have kids sleeping in the lounge area it will cost you €10 per day of your holiday. A safe is €15 per week. Late book out is € 25 for 6 hours. The pool is a decent size and sunbeds are readily available. The usual case exists of the best beds being grabbed before you have even opened your eyes. We were on the second floor and yes there is noise from the local bars but nothing beyond atmospheric. Fig Tree Bay beach is five minutes away and it is €2.50 for each sunbed and the same again for an umbrella. A pint in the resort is generally between €2.50 and €3. Soft drinks will set you back about he same. Restaurants vary from the affordable at about €45 for a family of four with a couple of drinks (Cheers Bar) to about €80 at the excellent Tower House, with a variety in between. Protaras caters for all tastes and budgets. This is a simple but very enjoyable set of appartments. If you crave the 'hotel experience' it's wont be for you.
