“Great Hotel for adults”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 28, 2010

Excellent adult only holiday hotel in great location next to beach & not too far from Paphos harbour (about 30 minutes walk). Brilliant attentive staff, great garden & pool area with plenty of sunbeds spread out - absolutely no need to bag sunbeds although some people still do. Adult hotel (& it really is) means is quiet, peaceful & very "nice" feel with plenty of room. Most of guests 45+ years of age & high percentage of Brits - as they seem to be in the Paphos area. Food good with pretty good choice - you won't go hungry. Prices in bars & restaurants not outrageous. Low key quiet night-time entertainment - a lot of Sinatra songs but it goes with this type of hotel.

I have some comments about the hotel but believe me they are minor & don't detract from the overall experience of being an excellent hotel:
- room smaller than used to in similar hotels partly due to odd 45 degree bend in room to give balcony a sea view - but adequate
- horrible sterilised milk only which means tea & cereal at breakfast a no no!
- room air con not controllable. Noisy fan & chill draught when on so couldn't sleep with it on. A bit hot & sticky at night when off.

Despite these niggles is still a great hotel. Definitely worth paying extra for sea view room.

Paphos Archaeological Park with mosaics etc. a must. Coral Bay beach also worth a visit being about half hour bus ride away. Nice beach if a little busy. Good beach bar for lunch.
Buses good. Can travel anywhere into & around Paphos for 1.3 - 1.5 Euros.

Now a few words about tour operator Thomson. Worst part of holiday was the flights. 5 hours in a very cramped seat with dreadful in-flight meal. Also a dirty seat - my wife had to sit on a plastic bag to cover the seat. This experience may well put me off flying with package holidays in the future over this distance.

The other bit that annoyed me was we pre paid Thomson for half board at £16 per person per night - total £448. At the hotel you could but meals at 16.5 Euros per meal or 13.75 Euros if bought 4 at a time. This means we could have bought our meals for 396 Euros or £357 (at 1.11 Euros/£). This means we were effectively overcharged about £91. I know exchange rates fluctuate but not by that much. I have come across this before - I should have known better.

Overall a good holiday apart from uncomfortable flights & being ripped off for meals. These are the kind of things that drive people towards DIY holidays.

We WILL go back to this hotel - for the first time ever - but I would think twice before going on a Thomson flight though.

Jan and I have just returned from a week away staying at the Athena Royal beach Hotel in Paphos. I should say we are fussy/ discerning travellers and enjoy cleanliness and customer care . At this hotel we experienced the most amazing level of service from all staff at all levels.
The decision of this particular hotel to operate a policy of adults only ( no children under 16) works well and gives a peaceful environment around the whole premises all day - very relaxing - however, because of this policy it does attract an "older clientele" so don't expect fun and frolics ! particularly after 8:30 - 9:00 pm when it really goes quiet.

Our room ( one of 162) was well equipped with air con , tv, fridge, tea/ coffeee making stuff. etc . The location of the hotel allows for an easy coastal path stroll into Pathos ( about 20 minutes - unless you are older - and quite a few were !) where there are wide ranges of quality resturaunts etc.
The area is sewn up by the property owners Constaninou Bros who offer a range of 3 - 4 - 5 star hotels along the "strip" , which if you stroll left from the Athena you can gauge the differences in both location and quality between the hotels available. during our tour of brief noseyness of the other sites we soon realised how well the "Royal" was appointed especially in terms of value for money. If you want to relax then we would not hesitate to recommend the staff, location and its facilities.

I stayed for one week in this hotel with my husband and daughters age 17 and 19. The youngest age accepted by the hotel is 17 which tended to mean that there were lots of late 20/30s and then a big jump to the 50+ age group i.e. no 30s/40s with kids under 17. As a consequence the hotel seemed very peaceful and relaxed - a good atmosphere. Guests also seemed to be predominantly Britisish probably 60 -70%.
The hotel is very well run with a charming and friendly staff. We stayed on a B+B basis but did eat two evening meals there. Everything is buffet style but there is a huge choice and the food we had was excellent. We chose B+B basis as we like to try local restaurants but the hotel meals were excellent value with theme nights (we attended the Sunday carvery and the Cyprus night). You coud eat as much as you liked which unfortunately was very tempting! Eating at restauarnts in the resort as not cheap and in retrospect we would have opted for the offer to B+B guests which was if you booked 4 nights evening meals you would get them at the special rate of 13euros.
The pool areas were clean and spacious with never any problem in finding a lounger and well spaced with lovely views across the sea. The three pools were lovely and clean and rarely very full at all.
The hotel was approx a 20 min walk from the centre of Pahos but it was so hot when we were there we could only do this in the evening. Buses however were cheap, frequent and modern and taxis readily available
The hotel is on the water front and there is a beach of sorts but this could probably be improved. People rarely chose to sit on teh beach but you could swim off the jetty
We enjoyed the 6 - 7pm happy hur and originally aimed to drink our way through the cocktail menu - we failed but had a good time attempting it!
I would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel

Relaxing, a quiet hotel away from the main night life, a place to recharge your batteries!
The pool area is a mix of poolside sunbeds and sun loungers on grass, but there is plenty so it's not a race for them each morning.
The staff are very helpful, professional and friendly.
Food is superb, something for everyone and if by any chance there is something that is not there that you want the chef will be happy to cook it for you! All meals in main restaurant are a buffet style, plenty of choice!
The hotel is spotless, the public areas and rooms are of a high standard.
A downside of the bedrooms is that, when you remove your key/card from the panel the electric goes off, this means the fridge is also switched off, and in the heat any drinks you have soon warm up!
If you tear yourself away from the sunbed, a must do trip is to the mosacis in Paphos, about 3Euors and well worth it, try and go early morning to avoid the heat as there is no shade! The Wave Dancer boat trip from the harbour is a great day at sea, leaves about 10.30 and returns about 5, you get a lovely lunch, and a chance to dip in the sea twice!! Do not forget the suncream and camera!
If you hire a car, leave early and go towards the east coast and visit the little town of Deryneia, from here you can view the ghost city of Famagusta. On the way back come off the main road and visit the villages of Lefkara, but be prepared to be hassled by the locals to come and see all the crafts! Impossible to browse at your lesuire.
If you do go to this hotel you will not be disappointed!! Hope you enjoy it as much as i did!!

We had a wonderful week at the Athena Royal Beach Hotel in May. From the moment we arrived we were made to feel very welcome and that nothing was too much trouble. We had a standard sea view room and it was a good size, with lots of storage space and both indoor table and chairs and a balcony seating area. We were dissapointed to see we had twin beds, so phoned down to reception who arranged for the beds to be put together the following morning which was great, we ended up with one huge bed.

We had complimentary wine and fruit in the room when we arrived, which was a really nice touch. The sea view was gorgeous, it was lovely being able to sit on the balcony having a drink before going out in the evening.

We were staying on a B&B basis and the breakfast buffet was huge, bucks fizz, piles of fresh bread, fresh fruits and cooks making crepes and fried eggs to order - everything you could want. All sitting out on the sunny terrace watching the sea.

There was plenty to keep us entertained too, the pools were much bigger than I realised from looking at photos and the pontoon out to the sea made it easy to swim in the lovely clear sea. We enjoyed the putting green, table tennis and the French Boules lesson the hotel gave. The best bit had to be lying on the sun beds on the lovely lawn, looking out to sea.

It was so lovely being an adults only hotel too, very peaceful and relaxing. When we walked past family friendly hotels in the day you could certainly hear the difference!

Easy 20 minute walk along the sea front walkway down to the harbour, where there are some good fish restaurants. Bus stops near hotel take you up to the Old Paphos town which is worth a visit.

Everything was just perfect, this adults only hotel provides a peaceful haven, right on the beach, well spaced out sunbeds, ample facilities, buffet breakfast provided fantastic choice, champagne, omlettes cooked to order -wonderful ! This hotel is of the highest standards in cleanliness, service and friendliness of all the staff, and pays great attention to detail. Rooms were comfortable, big beds, and many extras were included - tea and coffee making facilities, bathrobes and slippers, fruit and wine on arrival, and even more wine on a birthday ! The beach bar was very reasonable for lunch snacks and the hotel bar drinks were also very well priced. Evening dinner always had a theme, we ate in the hotel on two occasions as we were on bed and breakfast basis, and again the selection was wonderful. Low key enjoyable relaxing entertainment in the bar in the evenings. Location was great, plenty of restaurants nearby, 100m to small new complexes offering every type of cuisine - try The Rendezvous , and sample the Greek meze, and Zsa Zsa and Ficardo's. A beach path leads directly from the hotel along the seafront and takes about 30mins strolling to the harbour in Pathos - lovely walk, ! This is a fabulous hotel for a truly relaxing holiday if you enjoy excellent food and lots of pampering, in a wonderful setting - this was our first visit but certainly will not be our last as we discovered talking to other couples had stayed there many times over,

Having read all the excellant reviews before we went, we were not disappointed. The Hotel is spotless and the food in the restaurant supurb, with so much choice. The staff from the reception to the waiters can't help enough and the Execuitve Chef is charming !
If you can't decide between the Athena Royal (adults only) and the Athena Beach, I would recommend the Royal as it is a lot quieter and a bit newer.
We had a land view room and although a sea view would have been nice, the land view looks out towards the hills so isn't a bad view. Although there can be a little noise from the road if you leave the patio doors open at night (which you have to as it is so hot).

One thing that is missing is internet access (unless you have your own laptop). Although you can use the one next door in the Athena Beach. Had there been a computer I would give this hotel 10/10 but without would give it 9.9999 out of 10 !
